My wife's
contractions are 8 minutes apart. That has nothing to do with this week's episode of The Apprentice, but I'm
just giving you fair warning; she's 38 weeks pregnant with twins and you never know when my review stop in the
middle of. . .
Ha! Caught you napping there, didn't I? Just wanted to make sure you were paying attention.
Oh, one more item before we begin. Apparently we have been pronouncing the word 'industry' incorrectly for all of these years. I say this after hearing Donald Trump talking about the cruise ship 'in-DUST-try' during the task introduction.
And now, the roller coaster ride known as The Apprentice.
I was looking forward to seeing what the reaction was from the Gold Rush team when Synergy came back to the suite without big man Brent. I wasn't disappointed as a good portion of the contestants rejoiced. Now where is all of the stress going to come from? Perhaps Andrea, who seems to be making a stand after everyone fawned over Tammy in last week's episode.
This week's task was to make a 30-second commercial about Norwegian Cruise Line's free-style cruising (no set times for dining, for example). The twist here is that they need to complete the commercial by 3 P.M. or else they become stowaways as the ship departs. Gold Rush's project leader was Dan who came up with the theme of 'castaway' (actually Lee and Lenny came up with the idea). Roxanne, who had a bit of a disagreement with Andrea at the beginning of the show, is project leader and their theme is 'fun'. It looks like Roxanne will be one of the weaker leader's for Synergy.
Oh my lord! They just had a scene of Leslie and Charmaine in bathroom stalls discussing Dan. What the heck was that whole scene about? It would have been better if Leslie asked Charmaine 'Can you spare a square?' and Charmaine replied 'I don't have a square to spare'. Gosh, I miss Seinfield.
Let me get back to the review. Synergy and Gold Rush team members actually managed to get off the ship before it set sail. Back on dry land Roxanne and Andrea continued their little tiff with Roxanne eventually asking for a little respect from her team members. Lenny and Tarek also have a bit of a disagreement on the positioning of their ad; Lenny said they should have a voice over while Tarek thought that a silent ad with text worked better. Take a look at the next paragraph to see who was right.
At the NCL offices both teams presented their commercials. At first I thought that Synergy was going to lose with their commercial, but then I saw Gold Rush's ad and had second thoughts. The NCL executives liked both ads, but thought the voice over on Synergy's commercial gave it the edge. Synergy won the challenge and, even though on the opposite team, Lenny was vindicated.
In the boardroom it's the usual blame game for Gold Rush. This team does not work very well at all and I'm looking
forward to the team swap. The team of Trump, Bill and Carolyn really take Dan to task on his leadership. Trump is a bit
stunned that Dan, Tarek, who is a member of MENSA, could make such a blunder. Dan decides to take Lee
and Tarek back to the boardroom for final judgment.
Trump believes that Lee should not be back in the boardroom; Lenny should be there instead. He also believes that Tarek is doing a poor job. In the end, because the concept was bad and he didn't bring Lenny back in, Dan was fired. Trump concluded by saying that Lenny didn't have far to go before he was tossed out of the building.
A final thought . . .Despite Gold Rush being a team of crybabies that lack a good leader they are very gracious to each other when one of them is fired. This week both Tarek and Lee wished good tidings to Dan.
Next week, something about songs, and the possible birth of our twins.

Not to quibble, but it's actually Tarek who's in Mensa. Congrats on the new critters!

Is it me or does it seem like Trump just has it out for Lenny? I've thought that ever since he referred to him as "the Russian" on the first or second show. I think he's been one of the best players so far.

The show has become so arbitrary it's not funny. The judges came right out and said that the problem was the text versus the voice thing. Yet Trump needed an excuse to fire Dan so he comes up with "It was Lenny's idea, and the idea is what cost you the win, so since you didn't bring back Lenny, you're fired."
Now, Lenny might be a moron, absolutely. No one in their right mind would hire him as a manager, or a follower for that matter. He has no charisma whatsoever. But saying that it was his idea that lost the challenge is just plain wrong.
I think Lee needs to go next, myself. Not only for his "Oh look, the boss is here, let me go schmooze and tell him everything that I'm doing" attitude, but for the smirk on his face whenever he backstabs his teammates.

I actually lost a lot of respect (I can't believe I'm saying this) for The Donald when he decided arbitrarily that Lenny should have been in the boardroom. If you're going to be penalized for having ideas, even bad ones, then you are going to destroy creativity. So what if Lenny had an idea that didn't work? How many other ideas were there? Did ANYONE in the group think it was a bad idea. If you're going to blame Lenny then you're going to have to say that everone else thought it was a terrible idea and he pushed for it regardless. I think it is ridiculous to say that the idea was bad and it was the brainstormer who failed the team. Geez.

Why is it that the executives say that they "liked both ads" when it's clear to anyone with half a brain cell that one ad is in fact absolute crap? I knew as soon as they came up with that "castaway" idea that it wasn't going to work and then they compounded the mess by not using a voiceover and making it a silent ad. Didn't they remember what won them the banner ad?
The Synergy ad wasn't perfect; I would have included at least one shot of the people from the black & white sequence having fun on the NCL ship, and maybe have them saying something like "Now this is what a cruise should be" but basically they came up with a better piece of promotion.

I am growing increasingly annoyed at Trump's constant gripping at Tarek's lack of success in spite of being a member of MENSA. It has been my experience that extremely bright people aren't usually brilliant in all areas, especially socially. Tarek was correct in defending himself. Someone has to step forward and offer ideas. Shoot him for trying.

The judges said they didn't like the text but they also said the castaway was confusing, so the loss wasn't all on Tarek's shoulders. I honestly believe that if Dan had brought in Lenny and Tarek, Tarek would have been the one who was fired.
Since the text and the castaway idea were both pointed out as faults in their ad, Tarek's many visits to the boardroom would have been Trumps deciding factor.
Trump has done this before, no matter how poorly your team does, if you do something stupid in the boardroom, especially if he is hinting at who you should bring in with you, you are pretty much going to be the one fired.
