As we await next week's series
premiere of Thief on FX we take a look back at some shows that Andre Braugher starred in between his
award-winning stint on Homicide: Life on the Street and now.
The first show we will look at is Gideon's Crossing, which premiered on ABC in the fall of 2000 and lasted all of one season. In this medical drama, Braugher was Ben Gideon, a very skilled doctor who wielded his unorthodox skills in the experimental oncology department of a fictional New England hospital. In actuality, Braugher's role was inspired by real-life doctor Jerome Groupman.
Gideon entrusted himself to save the lives of critically ill patients who had reached a dead end with their treatments. While searching for answers and cures he tried to inspire the next generation of doctors who came to the teaching hospital.
Most episodes featured standard medical drama fare. In one episode Dr. Gideon tries to regain the trust of a patient that refused his care previously. In another, one of Gideon's friends, who is also a patient, is diagnosed with cancer. There was even a cross-over episode with The Practice where the good doctor tries to save the lives of attorney Eleanor Frutt and her unborn baby.
While only lasting one season, Gideon's Crossing was a critical success and a fan favorite. I remember watching a few episodes of this show and comparing it to the still hot ER. For the most part, I enjoyed the show. I do remember one episode, it may have been the last one. where Gideon collapses on the floor due to some chronic ailment. It reminded me of the stroke that Braugher's Detective Frank Pembleton character had on Homicide: Life on the Street.
So, I anticipate a debilitating cardiac event for Braugher's character on Thief as well.

Sounds like a certain FOX medical drama with another certain unorthodox doctor...
I'm talking about "House" in case you've been under a rock.
