After the shocker that closed off last week's episode, it's not too out of line that we're treated to a famous Sopranos dream sequence this week. I got a big kick out of the show description on my TV's program guide, saying that Tony experiences "mistaken identity while on a business trip." Surely, this "means" something overall, but it wasn't even that simple. I'm truly beginning to feel like every little thing that happens, every nuance, means something to the overall plot. The previews for next week show what will presumably be the beginning of some troubles for the Family, and we're getting teased with more about that every week.
Looking into the title, "Join the Club," might lead down the direction of people who end up working as rats for the feds. And with Christopher having the Feebs in his face about terrorists being funded in this country by drug dealers, etc., we got a little taste of foreshadowing when he bumps into the two Middle Eastern men in the Bing. He already knows what got his girl offed, so it'd be a really big deal if he started talking to the agents. As for the real family, I thought seeing Carm the way she looked was almost as intense as seeing the open wound on Tony's stomach. She's in a rough place right now, and somehow holding it all together with her slacker son making a confusing attempt at making things good with his dad.Looks like David Chase & Co. aren't going to disappoint when it comes to Vito's backstory - hearing him make an excuse related to Eugene's suicide by saying "maybe he's a homo and couldn't talk to anyone about it." Those words will probably come back to bite him. As much of a punk as AJ has evolved into, it's pretty clear that his skipping out on visiting his dad at the hospital and the way he's acting seems to be more about deflection and less about the rest of his personality. Flunking out of school isn't going to help him get points with Carm, but that's okay. Settling the score with Junior might be a huge point this season, should anything actually come to fruition there. Needless to say, nothing will ever be the same. Oh, and what's going to happen when Dr. Melfi finds out what is going on?
I was so happy that this episode's dream sequences didn't try and be 'real' and let us know exactly what they were. Seeing the helicopter lights targeting Tony as he walked outside and showing the doctor peering from behind a light was kind of cool. What I was wondering about there was whether or not Tony actually saw the doc, or not. The completion of this week's dream pretty much sealed the deal for me as far as Tony's death to come. What might have ended if he'd made the "call home" on the hotel telephone looks like it'll be delayed at least another week. Also, his telling the doctor "I'm lost" at the hospital was a bit curious. Could that be some sort of realization as to his situation in reality, or something deeper? I'm also very interested in finding out about the voices on the other end of the telephone when "lost" Tony calls home. His wife doesn't sound so much like Carm, and his daughter appears much younger. And did you notice that Tony's calls all have either his wife or daughter on the phone, no AJ? That sounds spot on with him "hearing" their voices when they spoke to him during his coma. He didn't make another call, and never got to "talk" to his son.
It doesn't look like any of the other members of the Family are going to be cool headed enough to settle this situation fairly. Whether or not Vito makes it through the next few episodes will be smart to watch, because he appears to be the first person to be looking to "take over" a bit - or at least the only one really vocalizing it. In some ways, knowing that an "end" is near for this show and having what goes on during the next year's worth of shows truly lead up to that will make the coming weeks even more addicting to watch. Now, about those product placements...

Speakin' of Vito, anybody catch his grabbing the hot dog off the buffet table last week? Brilliant little detail.
I think Tony's not coming back. I hate to think of this show echoing Six Feet Under's final season, but I have to wonder what is left for Tony. After all these years, he's finally going to come to grips with his mommy issues? I don't think so. Him being out of the way sets up a major house-cleaning (both houses, as it were) and possibly the emergence of AJ. Seeing his father in that helpless position, knowing that Tony's need to care of his family is what led to his downfall, will lead him to take his place in dad's business. As long as Chase is cribbing from other shows, maybe he'll parrot The Godfather's final scene, with AJ getting his mad mafia props from the capos as Carmella looks off from a distance, sadly knowing there's still no way out.

I thought it was an excellent episode. It shed a lot of light into the characters motivations. I like the dream sequences becuase it shows how bad Tony's life would be if he chose a different path. It does not sound like carm at all on the other end of the phone, I assume he married someone else.
1. Where is Carms parents? Shouldn't they visit the hospital?
I like that we see the Maseratti in Chris' hands now. AJ needs to cut that hair quick.
I'd like to think that Tony will stay in the hospital for the better part of these 12 shows but be recovered somewhat for the last 8 after the break...giving a reason for the break.

Anyone else think the voice on the other end sounds like Artie's wife? Wasn't he dating her for some time? Maybe in the dreams he married her and took on another life (you know how she's against the business and all).

The first season i thought the sopranos was a joke. most people like the first season. but as the season's go on they get better with time. alot of italians like myself did not like the first season. last season and these first 2 episodes are by far the best so far. the fact that vito is a "homo" will get him killed off the show very soon. in a real life mafia homo's dont exsist so from what i understand after that statement he made on last weeks episode about when tony eventually gets taking out he will want to take over. some how i see him and chris butting heads. some how they will find out it will end up being some school yard teenage gossip. look at the preview vito speaks to meadows boyfriend, he will tell meadow about the time at the job and she will tell either chris or A.J and then with all A.j's rage he will want to get involved in the family with him flunking out of school he has no other choice. it is going to very iteresting to see what happens. what gets me is what is that light house he keeps seeing in his dream? i have a gut feeling that this will not be the last season.
people to get killed this season:
-junior
-vito
-franky vincents charecter
i dont think they are going to kill off major hitters dont see paulie or chris getting killed. i believe that chris and is going to but major heads. vito will flip the scrip and i believe he will rat or try and run with johnny sakks crew. AJ will join the crew when and chris will be his mentor and his capo. tony when he gets out of his coma( at the end of episode 4) will come oout with a vengence. meadow will wind up going for her MD instead of law school. so we will see what happens in the next few weeks like i said this is by far the best season so far.
there will be awards won for this season by far:
carmelo, AJ, tony and david chase will all win awards
see u next week

Great episode as usual. Carmela will get an award for that performance.
I actually don't think Tony will die, and I don't expect Chase to draw out how long he's in the hospital. The reason I believe this is that Tony is THE central character, and to kill off the central character this early in the season & 1/2 left is too dangerous to the show.
I think the reason for Tony being shot, is to finally bring AJ out of his loser shell. The "I going to put a bullet in that Mummy head" line was awesome, and also the first time AJ has said anything of value in 6 years.
My guess is that AJ will kill Junior just as Tony comes out of the Coma.
Can't wait to see next week's show...

what did Paulie call AJ in the hospital? I can't remember... but classic!
I don't think the "Join the club" had to do with talking to the Feds, though the scene in the pork store with Christopher leads me to believe, as said above, there is going to be more to it. "Join the club" to me links into Tony not being able to "check-in" to the conference in his dream. Clearly Costa Mesa is purgatory for Tony. He's walking through a "glimpse" of what his life COULD have been and I totally agree with the comment above, that his purgatory wife sounded like Artie's wife.
I found it interesting that the path displayed in purgatory for finding his true identity was in the form of buddhist monks. The monks knew Tony's purgatory alter-ego and could potentially lead to a meeting. That's a possibility, as is Tony going home to his purgatory family.
I feel very good about the scenes from next week. I said in this forum last week - Vito would look for Phil's backing to make a run at becoming Boss.
LOVE IT!

The analogy at the end, with Tony picking up the phone, was the best of the whole show.
He obviously hears Carmella talking to him and he tries to communicate but the call just can't get through.

Chris - I believe Paulie called AJ "Van Helsing"... made me chuckle.
Great episode. The wife's voice on the phone was really nagging at me - I was trying to place it the whole time since it didn't sound like Carm. I will have to go back and listen again and see if it sounds like Charmaine - great memory Erik! (She told Carmela that she and Tony slept together before Carm and Tony were married.) Can't wait until next week!

Paulie called AJ "Van Helsing." Too funny. AJ really needs to lose that haircut. It's giving me nightmares.

This year's shows are so full of symbolism, and this episode continued that trend. The monks were already mentioned. How 'bout Vito hiking a cheek and breaking wind on the Soprano furniture? Come to think of it, I think AJ's new hair style is symbolic of his entering a new phase of his life. I agree that the scene with AJ telling Tony he was going to whack Junior was pretty chilling. You could see all along that AJ had a lot of his Dad in him. I think that's really going to start coming to the forefront in the next few episodes. I think that's one meaning of "Join the Club."

A couple things:
Why did Vito want to give AJ a ride home?
Why was the conference Tony going to something about listening to some general speak.
I hope AJ gets killed somehow- I've always hated him. Typically I hate Meadow also, but she's better this show.
If they could get Janice killed that would be a bonus

Here's a task for somebody... have a look at this season's trailer:

Tell me if there is a Tony clip in there that we haven't seen yet? IOW ... he'll make it out of the hospital.

The script for this episode was definitely written to secure an Emmy for Edie Falco this year. What a great performance!
I have one question, regarding the episode, when Carmella was talking to the police about the shooting she said she broke all ties with Junior years ago, what was the reason for their falling-out, I can't remember after all these years and the many breaks between seasons?
Also, what's up with Janice...is her grief real or is it memorex???? She is her Mother's daughter.

As deep as this episode may have been, I was disappointed. I don't watch this show for any real deep, meaningful plotlines. I watch enough other shows for that reason.
I admit that some of the symbolism in the episode was cool, but really the best part of this episode was A.J. vowing to kill Uncle Junior.

If AJ shoots Junior, won't he be violating one of the rules of the Mob -- you can't kill a Made Man unless you're Made? (That's how Pesci's character is offed in "Goodfellas"). Even though AJ is the son of the Don, he might wind up swimming with the fishes because he doesn't know the rules. So maybe the title "Joining the Club" refers to AJ about to join the Mob world?

Ok.. bear with me... Last night's episode was great! D Chase is leading us on a vast epic here. My brother was disappointed in the episode, tho. he thot it was too "jumpy" and abstract. To me, the entire series has been about Tony and his soul. He totters at times on the brink of a moral dilemma. I think last night was on one level how a persons mind can work to make sense of dying. Tony could die... I'd hate it, but its possible. Maybe the rest of the season life will go on with the "family" while Tony remains in a coma, sorting out his morality and as he draws closer to death, he will once again be in the kitchen with his Uncle Junior and Tony will "see" what choices he made in life lead him to that point of his death. Confused? lol It sure is good for discussion, tho. BTW, Carmela was great last night and yes, I agree, AJ just may finally grow up..
