Season 5 of
The Shield wraps up this Tuesday at 10 PM on F/X with a 90 minute finale, but what kind of finale are we
talking about here? For a while I was under the impression that this season had been extended to 21 episodes and it
would be split up. But now I'm starting to wonder.
If this is indeed the end of the season (it's not being billed as the series finale), then it's coming in short anyway. Seasons 1, 2, and 4 all had 13 episodes and season 3 was stretched to 15. Counting next week's (mid-season?) finale makes 11 for season 5. Keith reported on a season 5 extension a few months back, but since then I've heard nothing on this. I've seen no press releases or found anything saying as such after googling the topic for about an hour. F/X hasn't even had previews stating that there's more to come, unless that's what we'll get after the finale next week.
I'm starting to wonder if maybe the split season idea has been tossed and we're getting a sixth (and final?) season next year. Anyone else have a theory?
(There's a couple of updates after the jump.)
UPDATE(3/18): I just found this at the bottom of an old Kristin at E! chat. Check the bottom of the page.
UPDATE (3/21): Michael Chiklis was on Live with Regis and Kelly this morning. He spoke about his involvement with Fantastic Four 2 and how it had gotten in the way of filming The Shield. He then went on to say that there are 10 more episodes (all are not filmed yet) and they will be billed as a new sixth season; not an extended fifth season.

Actually, I use TV Squad as my source for answers to exactly this sort of information, so it's a bit disheartening that even you guys don't know.
*Please* find out. I desperately want a longer season, and I'd prefer not to have to wait another six months.
FX loves to string us along with 13 amazing episodes followed by 9 months of absolute silence. At least they have three good shows to stagger that pattern amongst. (Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me.) Sad they killed Over There and Starved, though...

Shawn Ryan was on NPR's Fresh Air this week. He said that there will be another 11 episodes in the Fall. He has not yet decided if these will be the final 11 episodes, or if there will be one more series after that.
Listen to the interesting interview here:

I would have to say I am a Shield fanatic ever since i saw the first episode in 2002 when they killed Terry. I know there will be more to come after this season. Until they kill off Vic's character, they will still have a story to write about. It is not over by any means. It is bringing in to much money for Fox to kill off the series this quick. Besides, it is the best drama on tv today. Keeps ya guessing every week.

From what I heard, the show is going on hiatus because Chiklis is going to be filming Fantastic Four 2. After that wraps they'll continue this season. Well, I guess they will be calling it a new season by that time.

For the poster asking about what episode it was taken from, it was from season 5. It is the episode where they are called to the school for a shooting and there is a riot when they arrive. A bunch of high school kids are trying to turn over some cars and Vic grabs the hose and uses it for crowd control. It was early this season....episode 1, 2 or 3.

The Shield will be picking up 10 more episodes starting this fall. When Chiklis was filming Fantastic 4, it delayed the shield season 2 extra months. They have already filmed the episodes that are going to be shown in the fall 2006. This way while he is filming this summer for Fantastic4 part2 it will not delay the shield. Bummer on the season finale. Left it wide open for this fall. Can't wait to see it!

8. Can anyone tell me where or when repeats of this season will be shown? In past seasons, did F/X show repeats?
Thanks.
