Tonight was the premiere of Simon Cowell's newest invention,
American Invention, and so far I'm liking the possibilities. I like the judges and I like their reasoning. The
one question I have is, why are we seeing British judges on these "American" shows? Must be a buddy of
Simon's.Tonight's open casting calls includes New York and Los Angeles, where things got off to a pretty bleak start, complete with a public peeing tent and a "space beetle utopia" (i.e., a blastic bubble with a bunch of roaches running around in it.)
There were a few gems, and even some inspiring stories to accompany them. Here's what we saw make it tonight:
Sack Buddy -- Judge Mary Lou is a huge sucker for a sap story, and this one dragged her in with ease. Actually, it
dragged me in as well, because this is a really great invention. This guy sold his house to make the prototype of a
one-man sand sack filling shovel that fills a sand bag in one swoop, useful for filling dam sacks during floods. Best
idea of the night.
Handle-bar-seat-pedal Bike -- I agree with the judges' initial feeling, that this is an
idea that will take a lot of work, not only in materials but also marketing. And good luck with clearing safety issues.
However, I won't say it wasn't a cool idea!
Edible snow globes -- I cannot believe that this got four yes votes. First of all, if this lady is the one
selling these things, I'd walk away before she showed me what she was selling. Later in the show, Judge Mary Lou
no-votes on a child learning DVD because the inventor was clearly using the show only to boost sales of an already
existing product. Um, and what was this? I get that there are women who'd buy these, but I would be hugely bummed if
this won the show.
Pit and shell hiding bowl -- Now this is an interesting twist. The two main brothers from
the band Evan and Jaron are going forward with an idea for a bowl with slots on the side for placing nut shells and
olive/cherry pits underneath the bowl. An OK idea, but I agree that I think these guys are a cocky bunch that're
gaming the judges. "We're gonna be famous again, " one of them says. Said like a one-hit wonder.
Gym in a bag -- Mary Lou and just about everyone else on the panel gets taken by this guy's presentation for a gym
that fits in a backpack-sized bag. My feeling is that there are just too many fitness ideas on the market, and this
guy's idea could very easily get swept into that big pit of unused workout equipment. However, since he's being shown
on television, for free ... that could just be what makes him stand out enough to be a success.
Solar-powered cooler -- I'm not sure I'm convinced that this thing could store enough solar energy to power what they have in mind. A car stereo and cellphone charger? With no other power source? Hell, if I'm wrong about how much this thing can store and power, I'd love to see more of it.
Easy branch cutter -- I swaet I've seen these before. In fact, I think I have one in my basement, left behind by the last person who lived here. Maybe he was this inventor. Anyway, this isn't a big idea. At least not one I'd see winning the show. The approvals didn't end there. We briefly saw the Anti-messy
diaper bag, "Chess on steroids" and a few other unnamed products, one involving some basketballs. Casting
calls continue next week!
Quote of the episode: "As desperate as I might be to go to the toilet, I will
not choose a clothing carrier to do it in."

How funny was the guy who brought in the grindcore band, and his invention was a guitar with the input jack on the side instead of the front? And the woman with the child cages? Reminds me of that show Made In The USA that was on USA in September, and I believe got cancelled mid season.

I really enjoyed this show. It was completely entertaining and enthralling; taking the best of American Idol (the auditions) and combining that with the inventor's ingenuity, selling skills, and passion. I'll be following it for a while. Only downside, the host. Wasn't he from America's Funniest Animals on Animal Planet? He's no Seacrest. (Not that I particularly like him either)

The show has a good idea, but it somehow 'went south.'
Way too much time with the personal lives of the 'inventors.' I felt I was watching "Days of Our Lives" with all the crying and tears. The time dragged on as I waited for a thrust from the show to motivate me to watch it again. It never came. Less personal BS and a bit more
exhibitions to see and evaluate.

I watched the show and even though I thought it had potential, I do believe that I needed to see more of the inventions themselves. I was partly interested in the judges lives when I thought they would tell me some of the products they helped launch...but they never went into that, which made the narrative boring. I also do believe that I need to see one more show to figure out if it would be interesting to continue watching it. I am just not "sold" on the American Inventor.

While I like the shovel buddy (why did everybody keep calling their invention "-buddy"?), and think that it was the clear winner by a mile in the "people's lives will be better for this invention" category, I don't think it will win. These are business people, and you have to assume that part of the show is to see a portion of the profits from the licensing of the invention. The shovel thingie only appeals to a very small segment of the country. I hate to say it, but they'd make more money with the edible snow globes.
I wonder how many of these inventors have already patented their inventions, and will be told by the producers that unless they signed some ownership rights over, they're done with their tv time. That was hinted at a little with DVD lady when one of the judges said, "It's a finished product. We knew that one of the risks would be people using the show just for the PR."

I thought this show wouldve been much better, but was very dissapointed with the judges, and the fact they picked spirit over the better invention...That Pit and shell hiding bowl is that same thing as an ashtray with a cover, I mean really!

My wife and I are great fans of American Idol and only tuned in to this show due to the "Simon Connection". I think, non-AI fams may have a more objective opinion, but we saw too much "planned" arguments between a couple of the judges. We also thought watching a weird potential inventor with a bad invention was not anywhere near as much fun as watching a bad singer who had been told by family that they were great. We must say that unless we would see something soon that looks like it would last on the market for more than the initial ad blitz, we cannot see the show surviving. We also believe that a three judge format is more interesting than four, and one particular judge was not that interesting or entertaining. The show clearly needs a Simon and we did not see anyone that could be rude and right at the same time.

What a schmaltz-fest! I tuned in to see the wacky inventions not talking heads crabbing about how misunderstood their ideas were...show me the ideas and I'LL decide! Like 'Survivor'and 'Idol' we watch because we like to see people kicked off the show. I wanted to see all the crazy things these people believe in. Instead we saw endless sentimental footage of their hard-luck stories. This two hour show put years on me. Less blah-blah -- More bizarre

I realize that they edit for effect, but it was a bit odd to see the guy who had the sandbag shovel in New York standing in line during the San Francisco segment.
It's also interesting to see the mounting tension between Mary Lou and Doug. He might be a bright guy with a lot of inventions to his credit, but he sure is annoying. During one segment, although she was bleeped, Mary Lou clearly called him an a**hole.
But, yeah, I'll tune in again... (sigh) I have no life.

-Edible snow globes: yes they are edible but where was the snow??? Snow globes are usually filled with water and "snow". They lady just simply put a plastic bowl over the candy and declared it a snow globe.
-kids in plastic air cushion: only in the San Francisco Bay Area one can come up with psycho junk like this.
-Pit and shell hiding bowl: two guys that had a hit single once, never heard of them, do you know them? The idea is ok but why were they not able to produce a prototype?
-Gym in a bag: WTF? You can see the rubber band exercise thingy every other night on informercials. The guy didn't invent anything and he claimed he spent already $100,000??? This man is BSing everyone.
-Solar-powered cooler: one of those no-brainer ideas the cooler companies are probably working on it for the past 7 years.
-suits for cars: this man was clearly insane.
-bed pouch: that was fun to see her face after she learned that someone invented it already. And she claimed that she spent $8000 on it already.
-toilet paper holder with soap: not bad of an idea, would be great for the middle east where they don't use toilet paper and always wash their behinds with water.
-Easy branch cutter: this was unbelievable! You can buy this at every hardware store. That just shows you that none of the judges ever did any yard work.
-car window AC: well it was just a fan in a clear suitcase, but at least he had a prototype.

-I loved the kid with the dog air conditioner. I was really surprised that Doug and Peter both rejected him. They did nothing but sing his praises, then out of nowhere they denied him. Where did that come from?!? He also made a good point when he said he'd be good PR for the show, I would've kept him for that alone!
-Snow globes and gym in a bag are both stupid ideas... unfortunately we're a country filled with stupid people who will buy this stuff.
-Solar Cooler, brilliant! I can't believe this guy was the first to come up with the idea!
-One hit wonder pit hiding bowl... love their song, invention not bad, but where was the prototype? It can't be THAT hard to create. Honestly, I think a big reason they were sent on to the next round is for good PR for the show.
-Kid prisons... this lady should be locked up!

How many cities do you visit for casting and what is required that we have to present to the judges. I have a press release and a new product submission brochure as well as a paten that I need to sign and pay for. I DO NOT have a prototype and have no idea how to get this done.

The pet AC is already on the market. It's not a new idea, so shouldn't have been chosen.
I think the sand-buddy could also be useful for sweeping up medium piles of leaves/debris and bagging it. It's not limited to sandbags, so it could sell wider than at first glance. But, it's main purpose, I think is wonderful. I've seen people filling sandbags on TV news, and it doesn't look very efficient to require two people and 5x the time to fill one bag.
The snowglobe thing will sell. But, as was mentioned, what more is there to develop on this thing?
The patent part of gym in a bag is his locking system for the weights. Even w/out the full design, that itself was worthy of consideration

I have an invention and I could really become the next American Inventor. It is something that will help Americans -- an exercise equipment for obese children and adults. Get in touch with me because I'm serious and I am tired of struggling to get it off the ground. Thanks for your interest.
