Being the TV guru in my group of friends and family, there were
many questions that I got rapid-fire during last night's sixth season premiere (Did you know
Adrianna's still alive? Is Tony Dead? Is Johnny Sack still gonna be in prison?), but the most frequent one I got was
"Who is this Gene guy?" You know who I'm talking about-- Gene was the one who inherited the millions of
dollars from his dying aunt. He was the one who killed himself (in an incredibly graphic scene). He was the one who
no-one had seen before last night's episode. Well, that's where people were wrong. You see, Robert Funaro has been playing the character of
Eugene Pontecorvo since early Season 3. Sure, he hasn't had a huge
role in the series so far (he's been one of the family's generic soldiers, normally answering to Paulie or Sil) but
he's been there. Would the writers really just introduce him for the sake of killing him off though? So why do I think he was there? I mean, obviously Chase and company had some reason for giving poor background player
Eugene a big finale, but what was it? I think they did it for a couple of reasons. Firstly to show Tony's growing
paranoia about rats. He's had to take care of two snitches that were extremely close to him, and I think they're
showing that he's just not willing to allow anyone that's close to him (within the family, nor emotionally) out of his
sight. Secondly, there will obviously be follow-up to it. Tony hasn't seen any of the reprecussions because he's...
well... but what of the rest of the family? How will they deal with someone in the family taking their own life?
Finally, I think it was partly to show that there really is no way out for these guys. No one rides off into the sunset
at the end of this tale.
So let me know what you think. What is Eugene's ultimate tale? Was he there as a
stepping stone or a bookend?

While I did know that he was not a new character, I knew that Eugene was going to die because he was getting more airtime then anyone ever gets on that show (in a single episode). I hope it ties into something in the future (the blood smeared on the map maybe?) or I must say I will be disappointed that the set-up was just for the premiere.

All I could say at the end of the episode was, "Is EVERYONE a snitch?!"
That's how it seemed to me. I made a rather callous remark that at least all the snitches, that we knew of, were dead by the end of the episode. The old man dying of a heart attack, however, was downright funny. Having said that, the suicide scene was indeed very graphic in a non-bloody sort of way.
I don't see Eugene dying as a stepping stone. It was necessary to show that Tony is right to be paranoid and that, as you said, nobody gets out.

if memory serves correctly, i beleive Gene was "made" in the same ceremony as Christopher (where chris saw the black bird on the windowsill and thought it was a bad omen).

Your right. Eugene was made with Christopher and I would think that Chris will be rattled about this especially now that he doesn't have Adrianna to comfort him.

Gene was made at the same time as Christopher. However, Tony continually moved Chris up,regardless of his drug and alcohol problems while overlooking guys that have been loyal and clean. Chris is constantly bitching about his role and yet there's no telling what mistakes he makes when he's doped up or drunk. I felt that Gene knew he was caught between a rock and a hard place. With his death, his wife could follow her dream and since the Feds make promises that they don't keep, what did he have to lose? The Fed insider would have ratted him out anyway. He was as good as dead for snitching

Nevermind Eugene..Don't you think Pussy's widon Angie Bumpinsiero had too much time for an initial episode. She is running the body shop that Pussy had...alot of time for a minor character...she is going to be a love interest to someone...there was talk about her not having a man....stay tuned

Loved the show last night...It was interesting getting a view inside a soldier's head and family. I just think it is possible for that NOT to have been a suicide. Maybe he wasn't the one to kick the stool out from under himself....

I feel the reason Gene got such an amount of air time for a minimal character, is his wife is going to air her ugly head in future episodes chastising tony and threatening to expose him opening the door for a hit on another woman. Or there could have been a video camera taping in boston that captured the hit leading authorities back to Soprano. Also before his role on the Soprano's Robert Funaro was a bouncer at the comedy club Carolines in New York

Pussy's wife, Angie, was listed in the opening credits sequence along with Vito and Patsy, so obviously all three will play a bigger role this year.

Did no one else notice that the blood wiped on the map was directly on New York? Fore shadowing an all out conflict between NY and NJ? I wonder if it goes as far as it being 2 smears means anything? I thought it was funny Carmela was showing off her car to Johny Sacks wife knowing their situation, only to have Pussy's widow have a corvette she bought all by herself. I'm sure between that and her spec house project coming to a hault and tony not helping her is making her regret not taking her freedom when she had the chance. It seemed they were trying to paint a picture some people wouldn't miss Tony a great deal if he were out of the picture, like when Vito was making his comments to Eugene, and when Tony said "I don't care how close you are, in the end your friends are gonna let you down. Family. They're the only ones you can depend on." Finally, did anyone notice the foreshadowing with the milk in the begining? Janice breast feeding the baby, Bobby's train with the Nesquik (what did that mean?) and then Eugene spilling the milk when he opened the FedEx package with his inheritence. Seemed like product placement too, but who cares.

Also, the first line from the FBI guy about America's taste in crap. Obviously referring to the Daily Show, George Clooney movies, stuff like that. :)

ONE EPISODE DOES NOT A DISASTER MAKE. EVERYONE HAS TO FIGURE THAT SOME CHARACTERS HAVE TO GO. IF YOU LOOK AT THE OTHER HBO SERIES "OZ", THEY GOT RID OF THE WHOLE ARYAN BROTHERHOOD IN ONE SCENE. THIS WILL BE ALMOST THE SAME. GOING OUT WITH A BANG AND A BLUE MOON.

Season 6 starts where 5 stopped.
The horrific scene of Gene hanging himself has stripped Tony from all humanity.
After taking Gene's watches, money, and then stuffing himself with sushi, makes you feel sick. Tony is going to suffer from the inside, his references about not trusting anyone but family to AJ point into the direction where retaliation will come from, no punishment will be severe enough.
Gene was indeed made the same scene as Christopher, where he interprets the bird as being a bad omen.
Going further it will lead to Christopher not being able to handle his superstitious demons.
It is going to be a fascinating season, confronting viewers with the ugly side of soprano life.

Ah, who will be acting Cappo as Tony recovers from this thing. Vito discussed that God forbid something happens to Tony he could be the next boss. Christofer (I love that) has his ambitions. Bobby with Janice pushing him will make a statement for power. And how crazy is Uncle Jun? The team always took direction from Ton but with him out of commission and Phil Leotardo acting for Johnny Sack in prison? Prepare to see jocking and internal fighting for control. Who will take care of Camela's cost over runs because Dad built the house out of pine. I expect most ghostly visits from Adrianna and Pussy. Who know what Tony will say under the effects of sedation.

Would the writers really just introduce him for the sake of killing him off though?
They've done it before, most notably with Ralphie Cifaretto (Joey Pants). All of the sudden there's this guy who was a world famous a-hole, a captain and a huge part of the family, but we'd never heard of him before. They totally introduced him just to kill him off. And they did the same thing with Tony B. (Steve Buscemi), but at least they said Tony B. was in jail. He didn't just suddenly appear without reason. But it was the same thing, all of a sudden there was a plotline involving Tony's attack of conscience because he did wrong by his cousin, but we had never heard of this cousin before.
I know it sounds like I'm complaining, but I'm not too bothered by it. I understand that you have to introduce new characters to keep the show alive. It's just that this wouldn't have been the first time that they introduced a character just to kill him off.

The suicide of Gene will add to Tony's neuroses throughout the rest of the season. He will feel guilty for causing him to end his life, leading to more panic attacks etc.

Eugene hanging himself was meant to echo Judas. I think the story will come out that he cooperated with the Feds because they had the goods on his son for some drug offense. Or that inheriting the estate of Victor Borge's agent (love that random reference) was his 30 pieces of silver and he just wanted a way out to go enjoy his money.

I have this vague recollection that Eugene was the guy that intimidated the juror in Junior’s trial.
It was about a 10 second sequence in a store, where the guy (who I think was Eugene), came across the Juror- the wimpy guy and said to him what good work he
was doing on the jury and made reference to his family. I think it is about episode 40 if you have the DVD’s.
Can anybody help me with this? If so it would make a nice irony- the guy responsible for causing the hung jury that released Junior dies while at the same time, the free Junior shoots Tony.
