Forget everything I said about the flashback trickery of episodes past. This week's show makes up for
any issues I may have had before. An amazingly revealing episode with several twists I never saw coming. The
perspective we get from the Cylon end of the spectrum is one I had never considered, and I'm excited to see how it
plays out in the episodes to come, both in the finale next week and beyond. This was the Cylon-Human baby birth episode we've been seeing advertised for weeks now, though there is birth in
other forms as well; we see several examples of Cylons being "reborn" into new bodies once their old ones
die. Though we also see a birth of a different kind, one of a revolution within the Cylon collective.
I'd
have to say the biggest surprise, for me, was that the Number Six we see on Caprica, the one who Baltar knew, has
visions of Baltar in the same way Balter has visions of her. How could such a thing simply be a coincidence? Could it
be that the nuclear blast caused it, or are they merely so similar in personality that it's no wonder they'd see
visions of their true love?
Why are there only 12 Cylon models? I wonder if they'll ever reveal the reason
why their technology prohibits more. And with so many models, it seemed very odd not to see them all there on Caprica,
as only five of them show up (unless anyone went through the trouble to slow-mo the scenes in the cafe, as maybe they
showed more?) One interesting piece of obscure trivia: Sharon is Number Eight of the twelve models.
As for
the hybrid baby, that was a clever twist itself. It'll be interesting to see how the writers take that part of the
story, now that the baby is somewhat conveniently stashed away from the knowledge of Baltar and the Cylons. Clearly the
President doesn't trust Baltar on the matter at all, as she would have offered up the true whereabouts of the baby
otherwise.
"Boxing" a Cylon; putting them in cold storage. A term we fans of Galactica will
surely see more of in seasons to come, much like the ever-popular "frak." We'll also surely see more of the
resistance on Caprica, as Starbuck and others clearly think they're all dead.
The other important part of
this episode: as there are Humans who believe the Cylons may not be all bad, there are Cylons who believe the same of
Humans. The majority of the Cylons believe they are in the right, just as the Humans believe they are right. Though, on
both ends of the spectrum, there are those who know that nobody's right, and nobody's perfect.
Except for
this episode, that is. Perfect.
Current fleet population: 49,579 (or 1 if you count the hybrid baby)

Ok, I thought it was crap. I thought it was totally off the wall, and completely unacceptable.
Ok, just kidding. That one's for the Gym Class Hero ;)
Haven't watched it yet, and I skipped the Blog, I just wanted to get a hit in first.

Excellent episodes. I thought one of the interesting things it seemed they tried to make clear was that an invididual cylon consciousness is just that - individual. Or, at the very least, an "instance" of a cylon consciousness can be "corrupted." As in, Sharon and Six aren't just resurrected with a "job well done" attitude, they come back with the same emotional (or whatever) baggage they had when they shuffled off the mortal coil.
Lots I'd like to say about the episode, but I'm sure Tom, Dorv, etc. will spell it all out in a few so I'll save myself the carpal tunnel. I just hope everyone else enjoyed it as much as me.

Hey, how does one get stars on here anyway??
I agree with everything that has been said. This was a major transition episode... they're setting up quite a bit here. I guess if they want to (hopefully) make a long run with this show, they have to explore both sides to keep it expansive and interesting. I too was pleasantly surprised to see Baltar in 6's head. I hope they can explain this at some point. The only thing I haven't heard mentioned was the relatively small amount of special effects. Behind the scenes interviews tell us this is where much of their money goes to... hopefully they're saving up the effects shots for the season finale. There are going to be a lot of loose ends.... I have a bad feeling about this! ;)

Ok, so, wow. First, let me state that I"m blogging on my computer at home which isn't hooked up to a Monitor, but to a TV, which the video card doesn't render the regular text well, so excuse any typos.
So, I was completely wrong about this episode, I liked it considerably more than I thought I would. Let me break it down in into the three catagories:
What I liked:
First, I jumped out of my seat when Baltar ended up in the Cylon birth scene. Though, if Baltar was a Cylon, we'd never need a Six... So, a Baltar that's in Caprica Six' head just like human Baltar's. That's a bit of a twist I didn't see coming either. What does it mean? I doubt that will ever be explicitly spelled out for us, but its pretty cool. Also, its a bit interesting that both of the "images" are overbearing (definately the devil on the shoulder). Also, its pretty interesting that Caprica Six quickly becomes a much more "likeable" character than Baltar.
Three is pretty cool. Lawless has talent that I never expected. Also, Three as a character is pretty interesting.
ANDERS! I didn't see him coming back, at least not in an episode that didn't involve Starbuck. I'm a self admitted Kara/Lee shipper, so I've never really liked him, but I like what they've done here. I like that he now kind of "owes" the Sharon/CSix team, and I think that will inform the next couple episodes.
This bond between these two Cylons that seemed to have malfunctioned seems pretty important (Especially considering how Moore just said that it is on the Podcast).
Oh, and one of the most badass scenes EVER in SciFi was Helo and the Chief. I"ve despised the baby storyline from day one, but that has got to be the best "Funeral at Space" scene I've ever seen. Granted, Spock in Kahn is much more an important scene, but I don't know that you could do it better than what we just saw. If only I could live long enough that something like that could be done to my remains.
What I didn't:
Obviously, the baby stuff. There's no way in my mind that a rational Adama or Roslin EVER let this baby come to term. Its too dangerous a situation. Giving it away aleviates some of that, but still, its out there. Obviously its not the last that we'lls ee of it. I think a much better ending would have been Maya standing with Pegasus Six somewhere in hiding, but I understand that the baby will mean more down the road if kept a secret from the Cylons now.
Also, I think (despite Moore's comments on the podcast) that its a complete copout for us not to be introduced to a new Cylon model this week. He states (basically) that without a story for one, there's no need to give away secrets that are better revealed down the line. Ok, but there's too much of an opportunity to TELL a new story. I guess they need to setup Three for next season as Lawless joins the cast, but still.
I'm sure this episode will be hailed by many (Well, at least a few) because it gives us the Cylon view of what's going on, but it kills me that when they try to tell "fleet backstory" that many posted that it was not important, or filler. This episode advanced alot of important plotlines, but I like the "filler" stuff too.
Spoilers for those who care: BTW, everyone needs to stop right now, and download MOore's just posted podcast of last week's Captian's Hand. Considering some of the specific points of our debate last week, he seems to answer some of those specific questions. It seems that a last minute renaming of Heard's character caused that redub in the Previously On, there's a mention of Lee being the Commander of the Pegasus into next season, so my prediction of it not making it past the finale is wrong, and also a neat explanation as to why Garner's saving of the ship was so Low Tech. Also, it brought Rosin's banning of abortion into an interesting perspective cosidering the trend from day one of her away from the "dove" and into the "hawk."
Well, flame away... I liked it, I'm sure Tim did (Park suprised me today. I'm SOOOO much more interested in the former Galatica Boomer who's now Caprica Boomer which is a weird reverasal of our "nicknames" from last season. I'm just going to call the one on Caprica Sharon, as thats the name she seems to want to use. Tim, I haven't liked her this season because the model on Galatica has been pretty one dimensional. This new(?) model seems to give Park some room to actually do some real acting.
Best part of the episode? No Dee/Lee!

I wonder if all models of Boomer are "defective" or if it is just the two that are on Caprica and Glactica.
As for why there seem to be only 12 models, I assume this may tie into the religious aspect of the show. SInce they believe in one God as opposed to the humans many Gods, perhaps they modled themselves after the 12 apostles. Though who, overall, will eventually be the "Judas" has yet to be seen.

Once again, I find myself shocked at the choices made by these fictional characters. I find the human attitude towards the Cylons quite interesting. Even though these beings bleed just like humans, create life just like humans, they are referred to as "machines" and "toasters." Rape and torture of them is considered OK. The Cylon-hybrid baby is called a "thing" and "it," while Roslin and Adama actually consider killing it! This show always tweaks my liberal sensibilities, which is why I like it so much. You always knew where you stood with Star Trek, but BG often takes you down unexpected roads. Moreover, you often find yourself understanding why they make decisions you don’t like. I think that’s a hallmark of a great show.
I loved the Caprica scenes and Lucy Lawless showed some of that acting ability share rarely gets to reveal. The character of D’Anna, a fanatic if there ever was one, has the potential to be the greatest threat to humans and just may play that role in her 10-episode arc next season. In addition, Helfer once again showed herself to be a versatile and unexpectedly good actress, while Grace Park finally showed some potential. I love the turn-about with Caprica Six and Baltar. This was an interesting turn of events and once that could have come off extremely bad. Fortunately, the chemistry between Helfer and Callis made the entire thing not only plausible, but great to watch.
This was a return to the Galactica I’ve enjoyed so much. Great to have it back.

why did the writer put "why are there only 12 models!? I thought this was covered in season 1. The shows culture is based upon mythology, twelve gods in greek mythology, the sixth was Aphrodite - the goddes of love, as mirrored by caprica six.

Now, I may be wrong, but the way it looks to me with the whole Number 6/Baltar thing, is that it seems to me that they each of them have a trememdous amount of guilt.
Baltar because....well, we all know why he feels guilty,
And number 6 because she really loved him, and she helped to destroy sooooo many people.
It seems as though they're both walking around with a ridiculous amount of guilt, and that's where their visions of one another come from.
As I said, I may be wrong, I'm no expert, but that's what it looks like to me.
I thought it was an absoultly amazing episode.
Every week, it amazes me just how much they manage to fit into less than an hour.

I don't necessarily think that it was ever outwordly stated in S1. Yes, its an easy assumption that because their are 12 Colonies that line up to the Greek mythology, that their are 12 Cylons for the same reason. But, as someone so geniusly stated earlier, their were 12 Disciples of Jesus Christ.
While I'm more apt to agree with the Greek Mythology connection, it begs the question as to why the Cylons would do anything that mirrored the human's religion?
Either way, its not a "duh!" kind of thing.

This episode has me wondering about Cylon culture. All of the "skin jobs" seem to lounging around on Caprica, while the "bullet heads" are doing all of the work rebuilding it. We also know from Scar that the Raiders are individual Cylons themselves. So are the "skin jobs" the leaders of the race and the "bullet heads" the soldiers and workers of the race. Isn't this why the Cylons originally rebelled against humanity? Or was that in the Animatrix?

10 and 14 "why are there just 12 models". Dorv explains the s1 explanation based on the methology angle but more so for the human aspect than the Cylons. The human is more methology driven..the arrow ,the presidents beliefs ect.. The Cylons however seem to be obsessed with religion more importantly God. However jesus has never been mentioned. Remember, there were 12 tribes of the covinant in the old testiment,12 tribes of Isrial, then 12 disciples and of course twelve gods in greek mythology. If the humans no nothing of the old testiment or jesus form that mater how do the cylons?

Matt- There were a lot of special effects in this episode, body doubles, centuriouns, explosions, etc. A lot of those are probably more expensive than space battles. RonMoore said things to that effect in his podcast.

Ok, just a pondering from me. Clearly although they are the same model they are different people, caprica six is seperate from pegasus six, obviously due to differet experiences.
So...Baltar is clearly trying it on with Pegasus six because he believes her to be his 'caprica' six, i mean, he doesnt know any better, right.
Presumably in the next episode the representatives that come aboard are Caprica six and Sharon...how is Caprica Six going to react when she realises that the love of her life, Baltar has been cavorting around with Pegasus Six. Could be fun stuff.

This episode is my most favorite episode of the entire series. It may be my most favorite episode of ANY series of any show in history. The only heartbreaker is how Sharon keeps getting abused. The cruelty of Roslin and Adamma faking the childs death was a markedly sadistic thing to do. Hell, they may as well did what Dorv wondered and aborted the baby, rather than play God with the emotions of others. I guess the hypocrite Roslin feels more saintly since she actually didn't kill the child, her hypocrite conscience is all right now. I know it is just a show, but could you really do that to a mother? The rest of the show was so obviously stellar that I need not have to say too much. One small thing I noticed of interest. The centurion passing the stairwell stopped, noticed the fuse, then bent over for a closer look ...like a curious human. I don't know why, but I thought it facinating....a nice touch. A comment for Jimmy: "while Grace Park finally showed some potential" You have got to be kidding me..right? Perhaps I am watching another version of BSG than you but the fact that Grace Park just about carrys the whole show is a no-brainer! How many actresses can pull off the double character roles like she has. Even Edward Olmos praised her to her face on the splendid acting she has performed. If she were to ever leave this show it would sink like the Titanic! Finally showed some potential! what a laugh!

Ok.
Keith closes quoting the "weekly number" 49,579.
Maybe 49,579.5 if the baby is half human?
Did you see number go up when Pegasus arrived?
I didn't notice. Was the crew added in and what was their number?
Other than that, DAMN FINE ADVENTURE (not a show)!!
4.5 stars.
