I wholeheartedly disagree with this
editorial in the Toronto Star. The writer calls for Ana Lucia's character to be killed off on Lost. He'd
like to see her get scurvy, mauled by a polar bear, "vanish into a black cloud", or get shot in a special
guest appearance by Dick Cheney. He says that, despite her tragic back-story, Ana Lucia is not a captivating character.
He thinks she lacks depth and doesn't like her attitude. He also calls for the "killing-off" of Izzie on Grey's Anatomy, so he may just be completely out of his mind. Here are five reasons to keep Ana Lucia alive:
5. We love to hate her. Why does everybody have to get along? So she's abrasive and lacks common sense or civility. She has a management style thats, um, different. That makes for a great, strong character. Even if we do hate her.
4. Sexual tension. Ana Lucia fits right in the middle of the Kate-Jack-Sawyer love triangle and messes everything up! Something needed to happen to complicate that love triangle that was about to get old, and Ana Lucia was that something.
3. Shannon & Sawyer. I hated Shannon and Sawyer for a good chunk of the first season. Shannon with her snarl and her designer clothes, and Sawyer with his indifference for others were infuriating! But, if you'll remember, they both became endearing characters. By the time she was killed, I was very sad to see Shannon go. And I would totally lose my mind if the writers killed off Sawyer, even though he has returned to his criminal ways. Give it time. There is a lot more back story to reveal and, as with Shannon and Sawyer, she could always redeem herself.
2. Harmony is for hippies. While The Others are interesting, Lost would get really boring if there wasn't internal conflict within the castaways. This show needs a lot of flavors of conflict to keep it churning. Ana Lucia already has built-in conflict with Jack and Sayid and I can see a cat fight in the future between her and Kate.
1. It's too obvious. Killing off Ana Lucia wouldn't be shocking or have an impact because we're not close to her character and she's not likable (yet). That's a boring, predictable storyline that wouldn't have any lasting impact on any of the characters. Although, it would totally piss off these fans.

It's not her character. I just find the over the top acting pulls me out of the show too much. When she is on the screen, I can't suspend disbelief.
That is why I believe allot of people hate Ana Lucia, they just don't realize it.

If you belive that, you don't have many cop/sr. military friends. She is so typical. I do not like the character, but I can appreciate anyone that is anti-Kate.
I'm so SICK of her. People forget, she is the other convict on the island.

Ana Lucia was supposed to introduce sexual tension with Jack? What is this? While I know they're trying to introduce it, from a character perspective, it comes out of nowhere. He talked to her in a bar for like, five minutes. And I didn't really get any chemistry from the two of them. Of course, I also think Kate and Jack doesn't work, even though she's got that whole "broken and must be fixed" thing that Jack luvs so much.
I find Ana Lucia too emotionally flat - even when she's supposed to be all emotional and tender, she comes across like a piece of steel wool.

As for Jack's immediate fall for her after only meeting her in the bar shortly, she has what we call "latin heat"

Firstly i thought that nobody should be killed in the show, then i thought if i had to kill somebody in the show who would that be, Jack... that would create some panic and some interesting plots... but lost without jack... come on... he is the man... should we kill ''the fat guy'' to funny... to well build... Kate.. to hot... bad girl nice girl tipe.. to many interests in her from the fans and from the characters... Lock or Sawyer... come on.. no way they are the spice.. so yes they could kill Ana Lucia, they could kill Claire and her baby, they could kill the ''junkie'' he is already dead for the castaways, they could kill the ''priest'' but he is such a good actor.. especialy for the fans from Oz.. so toss a coin screenplayers.. thats your job not ours.. even if i would have directed that show i wouldnt have wonted to know the end.

for me it's not ana lucia the character, it's michelle rodriguiez the actress.
when she was alone with goodwin playing the cat and mouse game, she was surprisingly good. everything else has been a one-note performance, and like larry said above, she pulls me out of the show with her 'acting' a lot of the time she's onscreen.
but i deal with it. i still love the show...

Is anyone else pissed that the repeat is the pilot of the show? Couldn't they at least have given us the episode where Hurley gets on the plane?
I admit it. I like Ana Lucia. I think her backstory is pretty compelling. I could stand to get rid of a few other characters though, in the following order:
(1) Charlie -- I don't find his story compelling and I think he's really turning into an annoyingly bad guy. His is the only character I would actively campaign against right now (i.e. I want the little Hobbit dead).
(2) Sawyer -- I love his character, and would hate to see him go. But I think the death of his character lends the most to the direction the story is headed. And I think that the only thing that really needs resolving for him is for Locke to fill him in on Locke's father. I would be sad to see him go though.
(3) Kate (before Ana Lucia) -- Face it, her storyline has faded a bit this year, and I'm not sure how compelling the rest of it is. I doubt they kill her off though, because of the love triangles and the way they have worked some of her connections in this year indirectly (like Sayid and her father). But then again, before lost she was the "Live Links" girl--that's not a great Hollywood pedigree. I wouldn't feel too safe if I were her. At least Michelle Rodriguez has some acting chops.
(4) Apollo (Lee Adama) -- Jamie Bamber just sucks and is miscast in the role...oh wait, that's over on Battlestar Galactica. Sorry, Dorv, did it again--I ripped BSG on the Lost blog again.

Okay, I'm confused, Tom....what does Sawyer have to do with Locke's father? I know he is connected with Jack's father and hasn't he met Kate's mother? But I don't remember that Sawyer/Locke connection.
Sorry, I know it's not a direct Ana Lucia post, but I am floundering here...wait, okay...Why haven't they been using AL more? For two or three shows, such build-up, the out-and-out star of the "Tailies" backstory, then....Nothing? What's up?
I really liked AL's scenes with Goodwin. And why did they have to kill him off? I thought he was a very interesting character, even moreso when he was exposed as one of the "Others"! They should have had him be wounded and then drag himself back into the forest. It didn't hurt that he reminded me of my fav, Sean Bean, either.

Oh, I forgot to mention my theory about Ana Lucia's past. I think we're going to get a flashback where she and Jack joined the "mile high" club before the crash.

Jenny -- I think that it is well established, blog-wise, that we all expect the big reveal to be that Locke's father, a con-man who conned him out of a kidney, was named Sawyer, and was also the "Sawyer" who conned Lost-Sawyer's father. Make sense? I hope so.

Ahhh, thanks Tom...blog projection. That makes me feel better, I thought I had missed an episode or something, heaven forbid. Could be a possible scenario, could be...though the LOST writing staff is pretty good at giving us completely NOT what we're expecting. That's what we love about them!

I don't like Anna Lucia, Lizzie or the actresses who play them. They could kill off Anna Lucia and Lizzie, and it wouldn't hurt the show any. It would improve it. It lost something for me when they introduced their characters into the show. I don't care what their background is. They just aren't likeable. The ONLY good thing about the Tailes joining the rest of the group is the fact that Rose and Bernard are back together. I pretty much like the rest of the characters, although I'm not real fond of Kate. I really can't see Jack or Sawyer getting interested in Anna Lucia, and it makes me sick that they are trying to put Hurley and Lizzie together. I mainly watch the show to see if they ever find Walt and get him back. I really liked the first season, and I bought the DVD. I don't know if the second season will be worth wasting money on. Just my opinion. Enjoy the show.

I started watching "Lost" way behind the curve. My wife and I both thought it was yet another of the "reality TV" shows for some reason. We have now caught up very quickly via DVD and iTunes video downloads, plus the last few shows via TiVo.
I'm not a huge fan of the Ana Lucia character, although Michelle Rodriguez is pretty hot. The crazed cop bit has been done to death and she's not bringing anything new to it.
