You're gonna have to, if you want to hear it. When Ricky
and his comedian buddies Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington (aka "The Village Idiot") launched their
hilarious podcast in December, they flew to the
top of the iTunes Top 100 list. Their first twelve episodes were sponsored by the Guardian, and therefore free to all of
us. This time, their "second season" is going to be through Audible and
the monthly subscription will cost at least $7 for four half-hour shows. You'll still be able to get the podcast
through iTunes, you'll just have to pay for it the same way you pay for other Audible content like NPR'S This
American Life and Fresh Air. By the way, there's a preview of the new season over at Gervais' website.Obviously, this is a very big deal. This is the first podcast in iTunes to charge a subscription. While other podcasts are sponsored or get donations from listeners, this one will be the first to answer the question that so many business people want to know: will people pay for podcasts?
So... will you pay for Ricky Gervais' podcast?
[Thanks for the tip, Doc!]

Most likely, yes. I have been listening and laughing out loud to the current podcasts as well as their old radio shows. These guys are hysterical!

Not a chance.
Too much podcasts to listen to already.

Not paying for it. I'll get it some other way if I have to, and not through iTunes.

While I've really enjoyed the show so far, he's lost me as a pay client. Sorry Ricky. If you want to be paid to cast your show, you should be moving over to satellite radio.
Funny, the last few shows have had adverts on them, isn't that enough to keep the show afloat?

I'll echo two of the comments above.
1. Too many free podcasts to listen to already.
2. When I want pay-content, I listen to my Sirius radio. I still view them as different mediums, at least for now.
So no payment from me. I've enjoyed the first 12, but it's not a "must-have" for me (FWIW, I was a big Stern fan, and moved to Sirius because of him, so if content is compelling enough, I'm certainly willing to pay, in this case it's just not.)

I really love the show, but Seven of Dollars per month for half an hour per week is asking a lot. When I think of the other podcasts I listen to, if I were to pay for each one I'd easily spend more that way than I do for Comcast.

no way! Gervais is definitely in my ipodder subscriptions, but I almost never get around to listening to it as it is. as everyone has said, there are way too many podcasts. I can't keep up because I only listen when I'm in my car.

They talked about this on one of the shows, but I assumed they were joking. I loved their show, but not enough to pay for it. Surely they can get enough through adverts.

I love this show, but I'm not gonna pay for it. Especially not 7 dollars. There are way too many other great shows available for free. I'm very wary of celebrity types doing podcasts specifically because of this reason. I was very impressed when a star of this magnitude was offering us free content. It's a great way to sell your brand (American Copyrighter phrase) but I'm not paying for it.
What's next are going to have to pay for the ABC OFFICIAL LOST Podcast? Then eventually TV Squads podcasts? I'm with the previous commenter who said they view Satellite radio and podcasts in two separate mediums. If you want to charge go to Satellite. Don't mess with our happy and FREE medium of podcasting.

As much as I enjoy listening to the podcast, I won't be paying for it. Seven dollars for 120 minutes just isn't worth it to me, when there's so much else I could be doing. The show's funny, but I would be much more critical of its down moments if I could place a monetary value on it.

Wow - I am shocked that no one else will pay. I listen to a lot of podcasts but because I listen all day at work I hardly ever have too many. Also, I have to comment on people comparing this to the Lost podcast... to me, that is a totally different situation because it is supporting another real show. The Ricky podcast is all new content itself, not commenting on something else already out there. Oh well, maybe if no one pays then it will just become extinct anyway...

Missy, of course it's promoting something else. It's promoting all of Ricky's work, especially the current run of his show EXTRAS and his work as Executive Director of The Office - U.S.,
Yes, it is new content, but this show goes a long way to promote his name, his brand, his style and give people a free (well was free) chance to see what the "buzz" on Ricky was about.

Man, this is a tough one. The first twelve eps were really funny, but sillysin is totally right. Place a monetary value and you'll be much more critical with your investment.
I joined XM this year, totally satisfied with the service. If there were to head over to Sirius or XM, it would totally be worth it then as part of a bigger overall package.

Of course I will pay. The show is hilarious and the only podcast I can't bear to miss. Most of the money will go to Karl Pilkington in any case, Gervais and Merchant are loaded from their other work and don't need this relatively tiny podcast revenue. On the other hand of course people who listen to dozens of podcasts and don't even get around to listening to this will not pay, why pay for something you're not interested in? Anyway, the beautiful thing about this is that it's pure artistic capitalism. If you like the show, you pay the artists directly. They have complete creative control and reap the vast majority of profits. It's a beautiful and revolutionary thing and I'm sure the media companies find it very threatening :>

I would pay for it. It really is the funniest podcast I've heard. Karl keeps me in stitches every time.
One problem I do have is that the show seems to crash my iPod every single time I listen to it. Whether I pause in the middle, or even after finishing the show, my iPod won't turn on again after it shuts off. I have to do the menu-middle button holding thing to reset it every time.
If they can fix that, then they're getting my $7. You pay much more than that for a 2 hour movie anyway, and you wouldn't laugh as much.

the whole of series one is only a few mb, there are loads of fans with sites that would host the whole series with unlimited bandwidth - e.g. me.
I cant pay for it, they can put adverts in it if they must.

As previously stated, the money's so that Karl gets some income, since he's been unemployed for a while. Think about Karl!
Anyway, I'm getting it on Audible for free...it's just as well that I didn't have to pay, because somehow, the Audible files don't have the bookmark titles or the enhanced thumbnails. The sound quality isn't as crisp and clear as the *free* first series either. I expect the quality's better on the iTunes versions.

Evidently not. I think this is going to tank Karl's broadcasting career, at least temporarily.

Well, a year ago I would have never thought I would pay for a podcast, beut I just shelved out 6,95 and listened to the first two episodes... Even though it feels odd to pay almost 2 dollar for 30 minutes of content, I'd still think it's worth it. But only for one reason (apart of Karl being very funny): it's the only podcast I'm paying for. I couldn't image paying 7 dollars a month for each podcast... I'm not sure if I woulod renew my subscription though.. maybe if they will bring back monkey news!
