NBC is obsessed with curling

People are wondering why people aren't that excited about the Olympics. Sure, it
could be the time difference. It could be that we're watching other things. It could even be that the human drama isn't
that thrilling anymore, in this day of reality shows and American Idol.
I don't think NBC is helping matters by showing curling all day today. I mean, curling? It's not exactly the most
dramatic of TV sports. It combines the heart-pounding pace of horseshoes with the excitement of...sweeping your kitchen
floor. But it's been on all day.
I'm still not sure how you keep score.

I don't know about you, but here, NBC proper has been showing the Daytona 500 all day--after they were through gracing us with some hockey, which was awesome.
As one of the 20% of people without cable or satelite and so forth, I've been dissapointed in both the depth and quantity of NBC's programming. Everything I've wanted to watch, with the exception of Ski Jumping, has been on USA and MSNBC and whatever other networks they're working over with this Olympic business. People that watch NBC-NBC (as opposed to 'the NBC family of networks') have gotten totally boned when it's comes to both Curling and Hockey. And, you're right, it's not that I need to see a lot of curling, but after getting hooked for years ago, they need to not cut me off now.
And here's the thing: from 1-4AM, they reshow the same stuff they showed just four hours earlier. Why not throw some curling on over the terrestrial broadcasting networks, even in the dead of night? I'll set my tivo for it, I promise.
Hell, at this point, I might even just stay up late for it.

Sorry, but I am enjoying the heck out of the Curling coverage. It's finally being treated like an actual Olympic sport! What a concept!

More curling!
They need to cover more that just the US, at least a little bit. When the US match ends and there is one really close coming to an end why can't we see the end of it?

I'm digging the amount of curling coverage. What I don't appreceiate is the women's curling team scoring three in the 10th end against russia (?), forcing the game to go to extra ends, and having MSNBC cut to women's hockey. If you're going to show a curling, show the entire game!

All the rules http://icing.org/game/rules/world/wcf/ruleplay.htm .
12. Scoring:
(1) Games shall be decided by a majority of shots and a team scores one shot for each stone
that is nearer the tee than any stone of the opposing team.
(2) Every stone that is within 1.83 metres (6 feet) of the tee is eligible to be counted.
Interpretation: The 6-foot measuring device shall be the sole instrument used to determine
whether a stone is in the house, at the conclusion of the end.
(3) Measurements shall be taken from the tee to the nearest part of the stone.
Interpretation: Because a stone may vary in width, measurements may not be taken from the
outer edge of the stone.
(4) An end shall be considered as decided when the skips or vice skips in charge of the house
at the time agree upon the score for that end.
Interpretation: Should any stone(s) be displaced before agreement has been reached, the
non-offending team shall receive the benefit which may have accrued from a measurement.
Should an umpire displace a stone when measuring one of the stones involved in the
measurement, the stones shall be considered a tie.
(5) If two or more stones are so close to the tee that it is impossible to use a measuring
device to determine the scoring stone, the determination shall be made visually by the
Chief Umpire. If no decision can be made, the end shall be scored as a blank end.
(6) When a team decides to concede the game before the completion of an end, the game shall
finish only when it is the conceding team's turn to play. The score for that end shall be
determined at that time and recorded on the scoreboard. If this occurs prior to the final
end of the game, the remaining ends shall be recorded by an X on a manual scoreboard, or
a - on an electronic scoreboard.

I LOVE curling. I've TiVo'ed every showing yet.
Though, for whatever reason, I only really enjoy watching the ladies play this time. Four years ago I watched everything I could find.

Just because you don't think curling is fun to watch doesn't mean the rest of us don't *really* enjoy watching it.
Curling popularity is definitely on the rise. I'd never seen the sport until the last Olympics, and I got hooked. And I'm oh so glad that NBC has moved it up in their priorities.
I mean c'mon.. ICE DANCING? That's total shit.

Curling is one of the few "fun" things about the Olympics. There are very few entertaining things they could even replace it with.

Yeah. Curling rules, actually. It shows great skill and tactical thinking at the same time.
It's much more interesting to watch than any sport that is just based on strength or speed (anything involving skis, basically).

There's a SLIGHT difference between 'virtually all the TVS blog readers' and the 20 or so who care about Curling and the majority of thOse 20 who felt the need to step up and defend it. =)

What I want to know is why all media outlets, such as ESPN, Sportsline, CNN, NBC Olympics, etc. have to post all the results before we see the event.
That's why no one wants to watch. Why would I watch Bode Miller in Super G at 8:00pm eastern when any time you turn on the tv or go to the internet the results are posted at 12:00pm eastern.
They do this every time there is an international competion outside the US. Everyone knows the results before we see the event.

I'm really enjoying watching the curling. But it's not normally on NBC, it usually played on the other channels during the morning and through the day. Part of the reason is because it's whole game, just like hockey, so they show the whole game. They can't really bits and pieces it like they do everything else (skiing, sled, etc). But it's really been fun to watch and learn. There is so much statagy to the game.

What sucks about the coverage is that NBC goes to commercial in the middle of the end. That is absolutely unheard of and you miss crucial parts of the game.

Count me in the masses that have been loving the curling coverage. I set my Tivo to record as much possible. I wish we could get curling coverage on TV to see it other than olympics, as I find the strategy and skill very fascinating. Also it doesn't hurt that the women's curling teams can be quite cute.

I never even heard of curling until I seen a womens competion on TV before the Olympics. It raised an eyebrow. I seen the passion and energy these women put into throwing a stone across ice. I was upset that I didn't get to watch any from Torino since they came on when I have to sleep.
Now a year after the Olympics my cluring club just completed our '06-'07 season. And I just completed my "rookie" year of curling. Yes I'm a bonified curler! Now I can't wait until my second season! I certainly wish NBC(or anyother tv network) would cover more. And for you Mr. Bob Sassone, I think you need to try the sport before you try to dog it. Ya might actually enjoy it.
