Check this out. Taylor Hicks, the grey-haired singer who
is my favorite contestant so far this season on American Idol, released a CD earlier this month. It's not in
wide circulation. In fact, I don't think he even has a recording deal of any kind, it appears he just made the album on
his own. It's called Under the Radar. Heh. Not any more, pal.The NPR station in Homewood, Alabama has downloads of three of his original songs and also an interview with Taylor that includes some of his music. It's all pretty terrific, actually. Since it's a mixture of Blues and Soul music, now I'm a little concerned about how well Taylor is going to do on disco night.
*A lot of you have asked how to buy the album. Go here. (beware: the website is super slow because so many people want the album!) I am trying to verify the phone number listed in comments but so far I'm only getting a busy signal.

Hm, I wonder if the contestants have to follow any rules as far as this sort of things goes. If not, a great strategy might be holding off a release of some songs until near finals time on AI, possibly grabbing even more votes.

As long as it isn't a commercial studio release, and he did it on his own or paid for local studio time... American Idol doesn't care.
Bo Bice had released music in the past, as have other Idol contestants.
I just downloaded the 3 mp3s... and they are indeed good. The guy can sing and he is unique. It's a shame he probably won't last on Idol as long as he should. He certainly has the talent to make a living in music.

I loved the songs! I think we are going to see some great stuff from this guy! I am hopeful that he will stay around awhile. I have heard a lot of people claiming he is their early favorite.

Why give the guy a hard time? Let him enjoy life and I think we will do great on AI. Does anyone know if he is married or single? Just Wondering!

It's Michael McDonald meets Joe Cocker. Anyone hear of these guys in a world filled with Britney and Justin? I like this guy. He seems honest and unaffected. He might not win AI because he's not a pretty boy, but I can see a long term career in music for him.

In try outs he sounded pretty good to me. Although there is some very good competition, I hope he makes it.

You know, I think Idol is a fantastic way for young and upcoming singers to get noticed...and discovered. However....what about an "older" age limit idol...for those who are say...over 35....to age 40 maybe. I don't think it is fair for someone like Hicks..(who is obviously seasoned and talented) to have to compete with the 16 year old who sounds like some Britney Spears knock-off.

He is totally not my style. I don't even know who Joe Cocker is or was until I heard the compasison made to Taylor. (I personally feel that he's got a little Ray Charles in him.) Anyway ... I do know good sound and I absolutely love his voice. I wish him well and if American Idol wasn't well ... American Idol he would definately make it to the very end. My hope is that he gains enough exposure to grant him success outside of A.I.

The first time I saw Taylor Hicks on AI, I thought Joe Cocker -- and I'm a huge Joe Cocker fan. I hope he goes far on AI, and that the AI folks will do a clip on Joe Cocker to educate the younger set who only know and appreciate today's pop/top performers.

Who cares? Obviously the CD is amateur.... shouldn't reflect upon the Idol at all!! He's a breath of fresh air to the Idol! Go Taylor!!

Taylor is a breath of fresh air-no sappy, candy vocals here. He's been my favorite from his first audition on AI. I also love his genuine, reserved personality. I just hope Simon doesn't rip him apart because he doesn't fit the AI teeny bop mold. He has my vote all the way through the competition! Hey Taylor-where can I get a copy of your CD?

I think this man will go a long way. Maybe not in American Idol but in his career afterwards. He is a unique singer and has his own style and personally American Idol is not looking for someone like him. He is to old looking and into older music so its going to be hard for him to compete with the others. BUT hewill do excellent in his solo career, he is just getting started.

Who says an American Idol has to be some young, skinny thing belting out the exact same sound as thousands and thousands of others? To me, some great American Idols were Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, etc. etc. I wonder just how fast Simon would've told THEM to not quit their day jobs! This talented and unique singer will get my votes as long as he's on!
