How I Met Your Mother: the next Friends?

I've
only seen a couple of episodes of CBS' How I Met Your Mother. Not only is Surface on at the same time,
but I wasn't sure I wanted to get invested in another sitcom, only to see it get canceled quickly or moved around
on the schedule. But the show is getting good ratings and critical acclaim, so I'm going to start watching it
now (Surface ends its first season tonight, so now I have no excuse - plus I could just use my damn
Tivo).
Matthew Gilbert over at The Boston Globe thinks
that the show could, with a little tweaking, become the next Friends. What do you think?

What is going on? With such good comedies out like The Office, Scrubs and Arrested Development, why are rehashes of Friends and Seinfeld ripoffs, How i Met Your mother, still funny. That sort of humor is just played out to death. There is no more need for shows about late 20 and early 30 year olds living in the big city trying to find themselves and looking for love in all the wrong places while they get into zaney situations. Its been done. Doogie's character has also been done before many, many times. Whats so CLEVER and ORIGINAL about a show that needs to be compared to another show?

I still say they should drop the future-past tense from the show's mythos. Focus on Ted, Barney, and the ladies that they meet until it forces Robin to commit to Ted. And I've been saying that online since the first episode.

It started out OK, but has been getting better ever since. The last few episodes have been tops. Quickly becoming a fav. (Although tonight my tivo spazzed on my and didn't record the last 10 minutes -- right when Barney, Ted, and that girl from Buffy were all taking there pants off, simultaneously, in 3 separate story lines.)

I just hope it isn't the next FRIENDS
or the next big breakout hit.
I hate it when shows go to the really big time.
When that happened to Seinfeld the show changed. IT just still great but it changed dramaticly...
I just don't want this to be a Watercooler show.

It has the right mix of romance/comedy/fun characters that you can watch it with the gf, which is pretty uncommon.
Though the question is, can they keep it fresh.

Wow... nice article!
It's not an original thought, though... I broached this subject three months ago on this very blog:

I don't think this show, as good as it is, shoul dbe called the "Next Friends".
It's a story about a guy meeting the woman of his life and it's funny how I can totally relate to Ted.
The show's strongest point is the surrounding cast. In Friends, everybody is fancy and pretty. In HIMYM, the characters like Marshall, Barney, Lily and Robin are down to earth like Marshall is a college student and Robin is a struggling reporter.
I think this show can branch out and bne it's own thing. I can't say the same thing about Friends where people are hooking up with Tom Sellick, Brad Pitt, etc...
This is a good show and I thinnk it has potentials to be great!

Lovin' it. It might not be the first show out of my mouth if someone asks for my favorites, but I probably look forward to seeing this show as much as anything on TV right now.
Neil Patrick Harris will probably take Sean Hayes' spot on the award circuit next year and ought to win an Emmy if this season is any guide.

I'm not sure about the next "Friends", but it seems to me that it could be an American version of the BBC series "Coupling", one that's better than the crap that NBC gave us when they set out to create an American version of "Coupling".

I watched the first 3 episodes and couldn't stand it. Boring, bland and banal with one "edgy" joke allotted per show. It's too formulaic. It'll be a big hit.

I didn't sign up immediately to this show but after reading some reviews awhile back, one of which was by Joss Whedon, I gave a few episodes a go. I love it.. it's one of my faves now. It plays like life is between friends and I.. so I relate. The language, the humor.. Lovin' it!
