I watched Dave Chappelle on
Oprah yesterday and, despite denying rumors that he's crazy, I think he may
have some sort of mental imbalance. Oprah opened up the show by asking him why he suddenly left for Africa after
signing a $50 million, 2-year deal with Comedy Central. I don't think he ever gave a straight answer. He did say
something about "they" were trying to manipulate him through the press, and that there was a lot of pressure,
and he had ethical issues with some sketches on the show. But, it took me an hour to glean that from his rambling,
disjointed answers to Oprah's questions. Oprah was clearly confused. She kept trying to get clarification from him on
why he disappeared. At 19 minutes into the show, she was still asking.Later, when she asked him whether he would return to his show on Comedy Central, he said he had been thinking about that question all during the interview and appeared to just make up an answer on the spot. He said something about creating a comfortable work environment and donating DVD proceeds to charity. Huh?
What concerns me most about Dave Chappelle is his denial that he's having mental issues. He said close friends, family and co-workers were telling him he was going out of his mind and encouraging him to take anti-psychotics. He explained it away by saying that people were trying to manipulate him. And, he bashed his writing partner for not calling when Chappelle ran off to Africa (without even telling his wife!) and asked, "what kind of a friend is that?" I think that's probably the kind of friend who's pissed off at Chappelle for walking away from a $50 million deal that didn't just involve Dave, but all the people who work for him.
Whatever the problem, whether it's a chemical imbalance in his brain or not, the man did not seem right in the head.
What did you guys think of the interview?

I beleive that a somewhat intelligent black person will understand what DC is trying to say, whithout cutting his own throat, White people will just label him as crazy. What DC is suffering from is not a 'mental condition' it's just his responsibility as a black man, plain and simple. His jokes are based on racism and his use of the 'N' word is prolific. His conscience is getting the best of him, which says a lot about him as a man and not a money hungry pig (like most of us). Being black in this country is not easy and White people will never understand nor do they try and understand. Dave knows his 'jokes' can be taken the wrong way and have an effect on society (black and white people) that he would be responsible for. I knew that was the problem when he first left his show, my speculations have now been confirmed. It just shows you that White America looks at Black people in a whole different light then they do themselves. There is a lot of bad history that us Black people have not forgotten about when it comes to white people and even though DC comedy plays on this it basically can 'stur the pot' and the end result can be somewhat misinterpreted. He seems to be a cool guy to have enough care about African American struggles in this country, struggles that he makes fun of for money, that he owes some type of responsibilty to make sure those struggles are not prostituted for money.

Put aside what he did and didn't say for a moment... that brother was high on something. His eyes were glassy... one eye blinked slower than the other... he constantly licked his lips and slurred several times. Chappelle, to me, is the funniest person in the business, but that man was higher than a kite. My boyfriend noticed and he doesn't even know what "high people" look like. I'm not judging -- I'm just saying Dave Chappelle was f*cked up!

I also felt confused and unsatisfied with his answers. But I was left with the impression that he is hiding something since he would not answer any question directly, rather than he is mentally unstable. His answers were vague and there definitely seemed to be SOMETHING missing.

Then I too must be on drugs, because I understood every word he said and definitely felt his pain. I don't know how many of you out there have ever experienced low level assaults, or even understand what thay are. I'm pretty sure Oprah understood too, she just kept asking to give her whole audience the chance to understand. You can't see nor understand what you don't know. Dave Chappelle is a 50 million dollar Black man and to some that makes him extremely dangerous. Some things are never going to change. The only change is the tactics that are used. I should be as "crazy" as Dave Chappelle, and I hope my children develop his craziness, and I am damn sure going to teach his craziness to my grandchildren. Dave said HELL NO, I'm not the one

I think he is disturbed...black, white, green, purple, yellow, or blue the man is obviously having issues with his mental health. It's sad to say it is a race thing...it is a mental illness thing. I do feel sorry for him, but it has to do with his mental illness~not his color. I hope he finds his place and gets the help he needs to be a productive person for his wife , family, friends, and himself. God bless him.

Melanie Ring just summed it all up. Dave gave you the PC version but I'm sure if you spoke with him one on one he'd give you the unpc version. I completely understood where Dave is coming from and I don't belive for one moment he's mentally unstable.

Having read the "Chapelle Theory" on the website Angela listed above many months ago, the interview makes some sense in that context. Just because he is paranoid doesn't mean that someone isn't out to get him. That said, it is a little far-fetched to buy in to a conspiracy on that level. He obviously could benefit from medication or counseling, but it seems that he is not ready to take that step and no one can make him.

Its all you who are confusing me. When Dave walked away, the network did ''damage control'' by trying to ruin Dave. They put out some rumor about drugs, or being crazy. You all readily consumed it. What is hard to understand? Did most of you not take your ''Riddling?'' The man felt that with all the royalties, rights to DVD sales, etc. he was not getting the best cut. It was a hit show children...I would be worried about my piece of the cake too. He felt like if he wasn't getting a good piece of the action, he should at least be able to give it to a party more worth it as opposed to ''SNAKES'' (producer's, network exec's. not some figment of his imagination) who don't care about him, and are looking only to make his show into a modern day ''Minstrel Variety Show.'' He realized that after taping a skit that was in bad taste to the black community, and a white show producer was way too happy about it, he realized he was just being exploited. I remember watching the tap dancing star of the movie Bamboozled realize what part he played, and after going against them trying to exploit him in the name of clowning black people they asked him ''are you crazy?'' There is a bigger picture here. None of you see it because you have eaten what the studio's have given you to eat. It's all funny for ''you people'' to laugh at ''us.''

chappelletheory is crap. It was meant as a joke. It holds as much credibility as the bert is evil website. http://www.bertisevil.tv/index2.htm. The guy couldn't cope with pressure and used drugs as an escape. When the pressure go enourmous he cracked. Better crakced than dead like Chris Farley, or Belushi.

I agree with Anna Johns. His ramblings ranged from people following him, telling him he is insane to conspiracies about making black men wear dresses in film. It didn't seem to bother Milton Berle, Tom Hanks or African American and Oscar-winning Jamie Foxx. And he leaves the continent without telling his wife??? Despite his incoherency and inability to answer a question (he's had almost a year to think about these answers, too.), his demeanor bothered me most. He looked drunk or stoned. He incessantly licked his lips and inside his mouth just like an alcoholic does. His eyes looked both red and dulled. And his speech was often slow and slurred. Whether it's mental imbalance or chemical dependency, this guy seems to need help.

Dave Chapelle the entertainer is brilliant. However, Dave Chapelle the person is a total bs'er. This guy wants me to feel sorry for him for signing a $50 million dollar contract?!!!!! Oh and poor Dave suffering the indignity of studio executives wanting some input on their $50 million dollar investment- boo hoo ;(. If Dave didn't want Comedy Central to have any input in his show then he should have negotiated that into the CONTRACT!
And there was more bs when he mentioned the charitable giving. He DIDN'T say he was going to give that $50 million to charity. He DID say he would give a PORTION of FUTURE dvd sales to charity. Yet people seem to think he is going to give the $50 million to charity.
And let's not forget why Dave is now willing to do the show again-- because if he didn't he would have been in breech of contract and forfeited a portion of the $50 million for non-performance.
And if this guy was really just stressed out, he could have told Comedy Central that he needs a month off to recharge his batteries or if their trying to have input into the direction of the show was such a problem then he could have had his agent try and renegotiate the contract. Those would be the actions of a SANE man. An INSANE man would fly to another continent without telling his wife and child.
Also, during the interview his voice was monotone and showed little emotion. Plus, he had great difficulty giving direct answers to questions. Those two behaviors are signs of prescription drug use such as Xanax, Valium, Prozac, etc.

this conspiracy theory really is hilarious! just imagining oprah, farrakhan, whoopi and cosby sitting together, making a vodoo doll...cracks me up.
i guess the truth is much simpler than that, of course chapelle has been under a lot of pressure. and of course that´s gonna get to him. can`t blame him for getting a little paranoid.

I was very much looking forward to Oprah's interview and during the entire show I became increasingly uncomfortable watching and listening to DC. I have to agree,in part, with YaMan and I think that website supplied by Angela (www.chappelletheory.com) is too far out there. I am a middle aged white woman and I do not buy into that "black elite" conspiracy theory. If the general public understood how the entertainment business is run, I think there would be a better understanding of that interview and what is going on with Chappelle. I don't think Dave understood "the machine" that runs the entertainment industry. It is about control, dictating what they believe the audience wants to see based upon their demographic studies, and most importantly, the bottom line (money). When something or someone becomes a commercial success, it is all about how much money can be squeezed out before the general public moves on to the next big thing. Dave is not a business man, he is a comic. I believe he lacks the business savvy needed to deal with the money hungry execs and did not have the right people surrounding him who do understand. After years of work, he suddenly became a household name overnight. He was being pressed too hard and too fast by everyone around him. What I came away with from that interview was that he was uncomfortable and was being very careful not to say the wrong thing. This is a man who very much wants to save his career and find a way to do it without selling himself (or his race) out and not offend the powers that be (white corporate execs). He never should have agreed to that interview with Oprah -- he was not ready for it. I do believe he needs the help of a good therapist and he needs to surround himself with advisors that have his best interests in mind and are not just looking for a way to make themselves rich. I hope he finds the help he requires before it is too late. I think he is a comic genius and I miss his work.
