As we began to learn more about Earl Hickey and his quest for karma, we find that he has become a much more
compassionate man and is one who can't just walk away from a situation where he can lend a hand.
Number 62 on Earl's list of past transgressions was his siphoning gas out of a neighbor's Yugo (with the help of brother Randy). Earl decides to right his wrong, and finds that the owner by the name of Philo is a very depressed guy with no job, no friends, no nothing, who is determined to commit suicide. It turns out that Earl was actually saving Philo's life by stealing the gas since Philo was trying to end it all by sitting in his car with a line running the exhaust into the driver's area. The car always ran out of gas before anything happened. It's karma, I tell you!
Philo tries to
get run over by a car or truck on the highway, but Earl and Randy prevent it from happening. They decide to help Philo
find a reason to live by lifting his spirits. He can't find any joy in small talk, motel hockey, or Earl offering up
Catalina (she refuses to be with him because of the smell), the boys learn that Philo has a crush on a girl. Of course,
things get a bit stick when the girl turns out to be Joy, Earl's ex-wife and Darnell (Crab Man's) current wife.
Joy is appalled that Darnell had a whole stash of porno mags and makes him throw them out. Earl shows up and explains the situation to her, and she goes along with the idea of a date with Philo with the ulterior motive of making Darnell jealous.
Philo cleans up and looks fairly presentable for his date at the Crab Shack, and Joy shows up dressed to kill. Philo begins to put the moves on her while Joy plays along, but Darnell gets jealous and tells Philo to keep his hands off of his wife. Joy and Darnell kiss and make up, and then head to the bathroom for some "extracurricular activities."
Earl and Randy show up, but Philo is gone. The boys go looking for him, but Earl's car runs out of gas and they fear they will be too late to save Philo. They find him in his car and think the worst. However, Philo wakes up and says he was only listening to one of those books-on-tape that Earl got him earlier to help him through his depression. Philo is no longer depressed because he now has friends like Earl and Randy--he now has a reason to live.
Another solid episode. It's interesting to see how Earl progresses through his karmic quest by learning more about himself and that he really wants to do good for others but also is learning to be a good person.

Best line of the night(myabe the season):
Joy: "Not all dates are good ones. Sometimes it ends up with your sweetie doing a black man in a bathroom."

My favorite is:
Randy: "Are you gonna help people who's NOT on your list? If you are, you'll never be able to finish that list so we can go back to stealing again."
Earl: "You really don't understand my list, do ya?"
heh

My favourite line:
Randy: If he does have friends, why aren't they helping him out instead of us?
Earl: I think we are his friends Randy.
Lol Randy is a great character.

I loved this episode. I thought it revealed more about Earl's character and his growth. The way the writers put nuggets of wisdom hidden in the midst of ignorance is fantastic!
