Hustle: Episode 4

HustleWhile Stacie and Danny busied themselves with a game of strip poker (which Danny easily lost), Mickey met Victor Maher, an ex-fraud squad man turned bank security head and the person to ever catch Albert. Maher explained to Mickey that he had some footage of a young Danny when he used to work as a look-out for some thieves. He used this as bait, luring Mickey into helping him catch a robber who has been troubling his bank. Maher decided to use a con artist to catch the thief so he wanted Mickey to befriend the robber, Sam Richards, and then help Maher catch him by accompanying Richards during the actual robbery. Despite Albert's advice to stay away from Maher (because he's always one step ahead), Mickey agreed to save Danny (and his ego).

Mickey told the team about the con but decided to not reveal the part about Danny being in trouble. To keep him out of the picture, he told Danny and Stacie to float and fill in any gaps. Albert was to rope Sam in, introduce him to Mickey, who would then introduce him to the alarm expert Sam so desperately needed, Ash. While they thought this was just going to be another con, they realized that there was much more to it. Richards explained that the reason why he's been robbing the Moores Bank so much is because it took everything his father had. So far, he has stolen back all that his father was owed and now needed to recover the diamond that his grandfather gave to him. "I know it sounds stupid," he said. "But this isn't about the money."

The bank's security was set up with retina scans that required two people together to gain entrance (Ash was going to switch out the retina information). Of course, Mickey agreed to put himself on the line and follow Richards into the vault. As Danny got more and more irked by the fact that he was a "floater" (he thought it sounded like a turd), Mickey was more and more irked by the fact that Maher kept getting under his skin (MIckey had tried stealing the video of Danny away from Maher but, again, Maher was one step ahead). After doing a lot of thinking, Mickey decided to let the rest of the group in on the information, telling them that Maher had some proof of Danny's previous criminal background. They pull together a plan to fool Maher, save Danny, and help Richards all at the same time.

Danny and Stacie, disguised as police, show up at a nearby store. Alrighty then. Ash and Richards do some sneaking around while Albert pretended to be an old man dropping a bag full of coins as a distraction. Ah, the set-up. Later that evening, Mickey and Richards arrived at the bank, just as Maher expected (Maher had agreed to hand over the tape after he saw Mickey on the CCTV camera). Mickey took off his mask for a quick second before they arrived at the vault, so Maher handed the tape over to Albert, who was anxiously sitting nearby. Before Maher could leap into action and catch both Richards and Mickey, smoke filled the CCTV screen. Panicked, Maher quickened pace and brought his security team, now equipped with gas masks, along with him. Upon arrival at the vault, he realized that Richards and Mickey were nowhere to be found. He and his security team storm out on a search. Remaining inside the vault were two guards who turned out to be Danny and Stacie in uniforms. They find Richard's diamond and, before Danny could get too friendly with the money, left.

Turned out that the group had re-routed the CCTV camera to the vault inside the nearby shot instead of the one in the bank. Clever, clever. And the smoke machine was just to get them all to put the gas masks on so that Stacie and Danny could get through without suspicion. A happy Richards thanked the group before they left. Hurrah for the grifters and boo to the grumpy bank security man. Back at the group's flat, they patted Danny down to see if he had any money hidden away and, after he came out clean, they all expressed surprise that Danny showed enough self-restraint to not take any money from the vault. However, Stacie, the one that had scolded him earlier, showed that she had no self-restraint when she opened up her jacket to show several stacks of bills. Danny laughed and showed that he's not as innocent as he seemed by pulling out a few stacks hidden away in his trousers. Another con completed.
