It's often a bit of a tease when a show promises a
death. Ever since so long ago when Beverly Hills 90210 promised that "one
of their own" would die and then killed off Silver's friend in the cowboy hat, I've learned not to expect too much.
Last night's 100th episode had Clark whisking Lana off to his secret lair, confessing all and popping the question. She
makes him wait for a little while and then agrees to marry him. All seems to be perfect, Mr. Kent wins the election and
is now Senator Kent, Lana is welcomed into the Kent family and it's good feelings all around. But wait, we are only a
half hour in. Lana's phone rings, Lex beckons and next we see Lana at the Luthor lair talking to Lex lit by firelight.
He finds out she knows Clark's secret, she runs off and he tosses his drink into the fire. Next we see Lana driving
away, calling Clark, Lex pulls up behind her, a rather rocking schoolbus with a distracted driver is crossing and
intersection and bam, smash. No more Lana. Clark zooms in to see his broken and bloodied beloved. Of course we know
Clark won't let this stand.[image via kryptonsite.com]
Anyone who has seen the Superman movies might assume Clark is going to spin the world backward to reverse time but
this time it's more simple. He is given a crystal that he can use but he is warned that the balance must be maintained.
Now I spend the rest of the episode wondering who is going to be taken instead. He choose to save Lana and finds himself
at the start of yesterday. Lana tells him they need to take a break from each other. Clark confesses what he's done to
Chloe who doesn't believe him at first but then agrees to tail Lana around for the day. Once again Lex calls, Lana goes
running, a car chase ensues but this time Clark manages to save her by slowing down the bus.
Meanwhile at the
Kent farm. Mr. Kent has a confrontation with Lionel Luthor. Mr. Kent vows to pay back the money that Lex's dad gave to
his election but then is shown a picture of something incriminating. He crumples up the picture and punches Lionel.
Afterwards, he staggers a bit. We see him walk away and Lionel's bloodied hand grab the crumpled photo. As Clark and
Mrs. Kent arrive home, Jonathan Kent walks out into the driveway, looks lovingly at his family, and dies in their arms.
Clark is understandably upset and fells as if he caused it but even after he explains everything, his mother forgives
him. I'll miss seeing John Schneider (my favorite childhood crush) on this show but I think that the death of Mr. Kent
might make Clark more of a man and polarize the tension between the Luthors and the Kents.

The episode of Jonathan Kent dying was a big dissapointment. John Schneider added strength, warmth and morals to a show that benefitted from his perfomances, as did his young audience.
Most of the friends that I have feel the same and we will miss him. Good Luck John, everything you do you do in style!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoyed the 100th episode of Smallville and while understanding the need to kill off Jonathan Kents character because it is a big part of what finally turns Clark into Superman, his loss to the show will leave a definite void as his character was superb.
I wish i knew the email address to Smallvilles writers as there is an excellent opportunity here to have his character continue to contribute the show without bringing him back to life. Since he was connected to Jorel when he was given powers to bring Clark back from Metropolis and hence like Lionel Luther when he stole Clarks dead body from the Hospital it would be easy to have Jonathan recreated as an artificial intelligence and holographic presence in the Fortress.
Just a thought and logical progression and would give the show the continued presence of his character.

Definitely wasn't expecting this, mostly because I thought Mr. Kent didn't die of a heart attack until after Superman bit the dust (at the hands of Doomsday) in the comics. Lana should have died, although I don't really know her story in the comics, maybe she's important. I just thought it was strange they kill off Jonathan so early in his life. Maybe I should just accept some creative liberties. Anyone got an opinion on this paradox?

By far, this episode was the best-written and acted one of the season. Tom Welling actually showed some real range of emotion and ability and the interaction with the rest of the was fantastic. However, enough with the life-altering crystals that seem to bring people back from the dead and turn back time! I will say I was glad to see the writers didn't take the easy road and kill off Chloe. I really do like the actress and the character. So, does this mean Ma Kent will become the new state Senator for Kansas? She won't back down from Lionel Luthor anymore than Jonathan did. I'm also hope this is the last we'll see of the Clark/Lana non-relationship. Let her hook up with Lex for awhile -- until she discovers how evil he really is -- Kristin Kreuk has always had better on-screen chemistry with Michael Rosenbaum than with Welling.

I thought that saving lana from the accdient would mean that his dad would get hit instead...but..that wasnt the case =
best scene: clark rushes to lana's dead body....and lex sees everything!!!

This run on Smallville has certainly been a great one, considering the raised standard the recent run has provided. I wasn't a Smallville fan until this season, and I wasn't dissapointed with this payoff. Nicely done.

...now that would have changed totally changed things! clark blaming lex for lana's death and lex knowing the secret! eternal enemies!

I liked the part where Jor-El told Clark "we are not Gods" Its a lesson Clark needs to learn, even with all his powers he is still not all powerful.

I hate to say it but MEH. They overhyped it and we pretty much knew what was going to (more or less) happen. It was a great episode, but Clark could have done things different. Still tell Lana and not let her go see Lex. While is dad would still be dead, he would at least have Lana.
I vote for How I Met Your Mother for this weeks most emotional show/episode

I wasn't really that impressed with this episode. Maybe I just "knew" what was going to happen (While there were spoilers that said Lana and/or Pa Kent would die, I had my own opinion, and was right). While I didn't like the episode overall, I thought the acting was spot on. Annette O'Toole was incredible (As was her make-up in those final scenes).
But I thought the episode was flawed, and mainly because it was overhyped. "Everything will change?" I think not... While the death of a parent changes a man, I don't think it will affect the show that much. Clark has strived (most of the time) to live up to high standard his father set. After the biterness of his mourning period (Which looks to occur next week), he will end up still striving to be his (Earth) father's son.
Considering the rising action in the first half (hard to separate by acts when its really two acts played over an hour), the damage Lana's death would have done to Clark, to Lex, and to Clark and Lex's relationship would have been incredible. That, and I've just never been that into her character (keeping in mind my history of Smallville is watching this summer/fall because of James Marsters, and then cramming the DVD's through the month of January), and have never been that impressed with KK as an actress. Give me Allison Mack any day of the week and three times on Sunday.

This was a great episode, and the ending really got me. With the music and the beautiful cinematography and the performances (grief) from all the actors, it was really a gripping, powerful scene.
I'm definitely interested in seeing how this affects the rest of the season.

okay...
1. the first 20 minutes of that episode... Clark and Lana together and happy and honest at last... were the most satisfying of the past years. as much as i would have missed seeing Kristen Kruek every week, i would have been more okay with her death than going back and not telling her. that just pissed me off. i know that they obviously cannot end up together (which was why the death worked), but if they weren't going to pay off this relationship build up, they shouldn't have set it up the way they did over the past four years.
2. everything will (potentially) change now... it's not just because his dad died (i think that's the lesser change)... it's because Lana is done with him and might be seduced by Lex. that would change a lot of things.
i don't know... i just think Lana's death would have worked better. Clark would have blamed Lex and it would have pushed them in their rivalry. Clark would be left to depend on Chloe and, more imporantly, Lois who he's gonna end up with anyway.
it was a good episode... but i still feel let down.

Wow Tweag, you make it sound so simple. "While is dad would still be dead, he would at least have Lana."
Somehow I doubt Clark would see that as comforting. This episode was great (as almost this entire season has been!)
We've all known that Mr. Kent was going to push off this mortal coil sooner or later but it was a touching episode with some great work by Annette O'Toole at the end of the episode.

Am I the only one who noticed that Lana was looking at the bush where Clark was standing the second time around after he slowed the bus? I mean, did I dream that or what? I could have sworn she was doing that. Please, affirmation, someone?

Aaron M, I believe Lana was actually looking at Mr. Kent drive by, and he was looking at Lex with his arm on Lana's. Clark sped off just before then.

wow this episode was amazing. though i was happy for clark in the start of the episode for finally getting lana i was pissed at how anticlimactic it felt. we had waited 5 years to see her finally find out and it felt rushed as did her death. then i was pleasently surprised that they were pulling a twist on us which was very effective. though i knew mr.kent would die at some point they tricked me through only showing lana die in the preview and by the first half. when i first heard about this episode i suspected it would be joghn kent but they did a great job throwing me off. his death was simple but very powerful. he died the way he lived which an honorable man who always put his family above everything else. the last moments before he died were done perfectly with not having him give some dumb final speech but just having him give clark a look that said a thousand words. the funeral scene...WOW! i have never been a affected by a funeral scene the same way i was here. something about it felt so real that it seemed as though it was my dad that just died. the scene was dark and tragic but some how managed to be beautiful at the same time. im going to miss john kents presence alot but what a good bye to that character. it just reminded me why this show is as good as it is.

Well yea Tim, but there wasn't any reason for him not to tell Lana about him. Also the burial scene reminded me ALOT of the burial scene from the last (filmed) episode of Firefly. Although the music could have been better, Firefly ALMOST brought me to tears.

actually tweag yes there was a reason why he didnt tell lana the second time around. he even said it in the episode. its because he knows that her knowing his secret will always put her in danger and he cant take losing her again. he is sacrificing being with her to keep her safe.

Oh please he could very well tell her his secret. Chloe know it, why not lana. I mean keeping this secret is just getting OLD, tell her and MOVE ON!!!. Lana should have been the one to die, for one it would have made a bigger impact on clark and show, and plus really who would miss her. The whole point of her character is to be clark first love and we all know where thats going. They try being together and it never works (especially if he keeps secrets from the women) and plus lana character is BORING sometimes. Her story lines are weak unless she's doing something evil (and even that story line is getting old, i mean if they let something "take over lana" one more time. . . ). Maybe now that clark dad died, he learn no grow up and stop acting like a whining baby. Be a man!!! Lets see what the writters will come up next . . (let me guess, once again another obstecle in Clark and Lana relationship)

i think your missing the point lisa. the fact that he isnt telling her is acting like a man. a selfish and childish person would tell her without any regard for the consequences. i agree its getting old him not telling her but you have to think about what would you do in that situation. if you knew that telling the person you love about your secret would bring about their death would you really want to take that chance again. as far as lana dieing she never died in the comics and his fathers death is the more meaningful because its the passing of the torch from him to his son. the loss of his father is what truly begins his journey to become superman.
