Oprah's fans are really pissed off

While we've received dozens of
comments
about yesterday's Oprah-James Frey show, Oprah has received
tens of thousands of comments. The message board
on her website lists more than 12,000 comments for the Frey show. In comparison, other shows only garnered several
hundred comments. The commenters go from bashing Oprah, to supporting Frey, to discussing the definition of a memoir. A
lot of people on Oprah's site and on our site think that she was too harsh on Frey, that it doesn't matter if he lied
because it's still a good book, and mostly that she crucified him on national television for personal gain.
Does anybody out there support what Oprah did? I mean, other than me and
Joel and
Maureen Dowd.
[Thanks for the tip, Debbie!]

A big 'WOOHOO!' to Oprah for taking him apart piece by piece to truly give him the 'Million Little Pieces' experience.
I think her approach was a little restrained given the fact that she put her reputation on the line and helped him to make a small fortune. I can't believe people are actually taking issue with the fact that Oprah wanted to set the record straight about James Frey and his experiences, or lack thereof.
Would the millions of regular Oprah viewers prefer to be seen as ill-informed, ignorant sheep? Isn't it better to demonstrate an ounce of intelligence by questioning what is put out in the ether by people who claim to be experts? James Frey claimed to be an expert; an expert abuser, an expert user, and an expert regarding truth yet he was proven to be an expert charlatan.
Frey's actions have added a sullying layer to memoirs as many legitimate writers who wish to publish their memoirs will be questioned regarding the legitimacy of their writings. So, hooray for Oprah's public humiliation of James Frey. We all can see the next step coming: James Frey writes a book about truth and redemption, no really.

I agree with you, Anna and Joel. I was really upset about the Larry King show and how she just sort of accepted the made-up portions of his book (which in my opinion casts a shadow over the entire book). I thought Oprah was merely backing him to save face, and I figured that she would continue to do so. But I'm so glad that she had him on the show and confronted him head-on. He deserved it. If he hadn't lied then he wouldn't have been put "on the spot." But he didn't tell the truth and he got called on it. And honestly, I think it's only a matter of time before more pieces of the book (if not the entire book) are revealed to be more fiction than fact.

Oprah should have just checked the facts before adding the book to her list. Along with her money comes the responsibility of checking the facts presented in her show.
Her questioning him after the lies are discovered by others is too little too late.

Finally, Oprah does something right. Actually, she made the best choice possible. I've never agreed with her views, on the books she likes, on the sensationalist approach she takes towards extremely rare situations, and I was outraged when she supported that fraud on Larry King. But she admits that she was wrong, she accepts some responsibility, etc. And she makes Frey accountable.

I think Oprah did the right thing. It's one thing for her to promote the book. I mean let's be realistic folks, it's not Oprah's responsibility to check the facts of someones book that she recommends anymore than it is the New York Times for putting it on the best seller list, but she made the mistake of not checking them after The Smoking Gun exposed him.
She apologized for that and brought him on the show to answer for what he did. Had he listed the book as fiction we wouldn't have this problem, but then again, he probably wouldn'g have a best seller. He knew what he was doing. He tried to rip off the readers and he succeeded with that book. I have a feeling subsequent books won't meet with nearly as much success.
Perhaps he and Jayson Blair could get jobs at the Weekly World News.

It was not good for Frey to lie about the events in his book, and I don't think that his lies and fiction hurts Oprah's reputation.
Get real he is probabuly not the first person to lie about something he wrote.
Those of you who read the book and are disapointed get over it.
Concider it a good fiction read.

I was angered by Oprah's comments on Larry King. An alcoholic/addict who fabricates the truth? And that's redemptive?
Yesterday, I thought she totally redeemed herself. It was great, honest television.

Did Oprah do the right thing? Yes.
Did she do it for the right reason? No.
She was covering her own ass at the expense of a talentless boob whose celebrity she created.
Oprah, who constantly interrupts guests and makes *herself* the subject of every interview, is a shameless shill completely lacking in self-awareness. She remains a blight on the television landscape.

It's always right to shout "bullshit!" when you see it. I think far too many Americans (and Canadians) are willing to believe any shit jsut so they don't have to think too hard or do anything too strenuous.
It was very refreshing to see a prominant TV "journalist" actually get tough on someone. Too often we watch serious ournalists ask fluff questions or try to minimize the situation when interview subjects are telling obvious lies, I'm very happy to see someone considered an entertainment personality finally strip away the diplomacy and just tell it like it is.
Lying is lying. Frey should have called it fiction if he wanted to create things out of his imagination instead of writing to the truth.

Why do people seem so willing to forgive a person who is so obviously not repentant? When he, his agent and the publishers donate all the proceeds from this book to charity, then, maybe, they deserve forgiveness.
But while they laugh at the world and live off the proceeds, they can burn in hell.
Bonus points: I love it when such people are shocked, SHOCKED to discover that the children they reared have picked up the same moral compass they used to get to fame and fortune.

Oprah did the right thing. People need to realize that you need to be accountable for actions. Especially, when you write a memoir that is alleged to be entirely based on the truth.
Kudos goes to Oprah for confronting Mr. Frey and conversely, kudos goes to Mr. Frey for cleansing his conscience and admitting that what he did was wrong.
