Words cannot express how much I enjoy George Takei. He's
just so... out there, in both an ironic and unironic way, that you can't help but appreciate the career he's
carved out for himself. From his deep, back-of -the-throat voice with the slight aristocratic Asian affect -- I can't
go a day without saying his signature line, "Oh, my." -- to his halting, gasping laugh, Takei (pronounced
ta-KAY, because, as he says, "the other way, ta-KEYE, means 'expensive'".) is equally a character and a
caricature. To top everything off, he has no problem laughing at himself, which probably comes from the stress of
growing up in an internment camp, coming out of the closet, and working closely with Bill Shatner. He just simply
amuses the shit out of me.Which is why I was so happy to hear him on the first week of Howard Stern's
Sirius show, and was even happier to hear that he'll be a permanent part of the show as an announcer and occasional
guest. After years of the crew making fun of him, George was able to take being in such a foreign environment in
stride, delving into private areas that he never talked about before and easily bantering with show wise-ass Artie Lange, who loved working with him despite his discomfort with George's
sexuality. Takei discusses his week on the Stern show in his blog.
