Well, they say nothing lasts forever, and they were right.
NBC's The Book of Daniel has been cancelled, effective immediately. The Friday 10
pm slot will be occupied this week by a rerun of a Law and Order episode. No word yet on what the network
will do to permanently fill the slot.
I have mixed feelings on this situation. IMHO, the episodes were filled with way too many subplots and that the writers and producers were more interested in trying to get away with things rather than developing a story. However, I also thought the show could have evolved into something, given more time. Of course, ratings are everything, and this show didn't have them, plain and simple.
I wonder if The Book of Daniel will be "resurrected" on a cable network, a la HBO or Showtime. It might just find a home and a loyal, albeit smaller, audience if that happens.

I like this show! Too bad.
But, they did have too many plots.
They were toning down the mother and her drinking. It was a little to over the top.
Too much with the maid and the 420. the Gay mafia, the gay son who had sex with the bishops niece because he hasn't come out to the whole family.
The teen adopted son, who's in love with a bigot-ted family.
The bishops in a relationship together.
Too much going on to keep it "straight"
that doesn't even cover Daniel's issues.

Good riddance! This show got exactly what it deserved. I watched the first two episodes with an open mind, but there was not one sympathetic character on the entire show. I know that Christians aren't perfect, and don't mind them being shown as having faults. But this family made the Manson family look like saints!
I agree that it seemed all the writers were interested in was stirring up controversy and including as much aberrant behavior as possible in one family. In the end the content kept advertisers AND viewers away. So the producers and writers really brought about their own demise! Don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out.....

Maybe I've just been keeping better tabs lately, but it seems there's tons of shows, even really new shows, that are being cancelled right now. Sure, ratings matter, but shouldn't they also maybe try to wait for viewers a little longer? I intended to watch the show at some point, but didn't see the previous episodes because I was busy those nights. It's a little ridiculous. Could it really have been that controversial?

I completely disagree, Stan. You are way overstaing your case. No character in the show was perfect, but they weren't a family of mass murderers. I rather liked the show, but saw it as a bit too close of a Desperate Housewives clone.
I also disliked that the religious element of the show was blown out of size by a vocal minority of religious zealots. Sure the show was over the top in the character's flaws, but in the end they used their faith to overcome adversity. Isn't that what Christianity is about...? Well, that's what it's supposed to be about anyway.
I'll miss the show. I gave it a chance--it's a real shame that people who had never seen the show before (and never will) kept it off the air in some key markets.

I am upset that someone else can determine what I watch! I for on think the show was good and showed that christians are just regular folks with the same problems as alot of people but that thru their beliefs thay can overcome most issues. I can't belive that this was pulled, yet shows like "the office" and"my name is earl" which in my opinion are idiotic and just plain dumb!!!

I too will greatly miss this show! It was entertaining, as well as opening discussions in our house as to morality and theological beliefs. Jesus rules!

Only 2 episodes have been shown in my area and I've watched both. I enjoyed the show and I thought the idea was that despite all of these bad habits and poor choices, people were struggling against their weaknesses and sometimes getting moments of clarity and chances for change. They give up on ratings rather hastily, don't they?

This was really a great show. Too bad it's been axed. There aren't many good shows on tv, and this was truly one I looked forward to! Almost as good as Peyton Place was back in the 60s. Too bad so many people out there are so shallow minded. What caught my interest to begin with, was the christian rights groups who were so against the show --again a bunch of shallow minded jerks. Guess they cant face the fact that clergymen also have dysfunctional families.

I wondered how long it was going to be until someone turned it political. It's a simple fact that for shows to be popular, it has to reach a broad swath of society. Hollywood just can't accept the fact that a very large part of American society is religious; and they don't like being mocked. It's one thing for characters to be complex and struggle. It's another thing entirely for every character to make a mockery of every part of organized religion.

As a conservative American I can tell you exactly why I did not watch this show, and it isn't because I believe in censorship or I am un-Christianlike or that I unrealistically believe clergymen are above sin and normal life issues. America is a place where people make choices, freely. I made the choice not to watch the show because I felt using Jesus as a character in a fictional dramedy was in poor taste. I would say the same about a tv show using Buddha, Allah, Mohammed, Moroni, Jehovah, whatever name you choose to insert that represents anothers firm resolve in their spirituality - - - its utterly disrespectful. And the CHOICE of the overwhelming majority NOT to watch, confirms that many people feel the same way. It's that simple.

I also signed a petition, in order, to have it cancelled. And low and behold so must of a lot of others who are for values and not trash. Good entertainment should not involve sex, and drugs.
What ever happened to good American family values, and shows like the Red Skelton show or The Andy Griffith show?
Trash in and so Trash out!! No wounder the Country is in a mess!!

They didn't even give this show a chance! Friday night at 9:00, please, what a horrible time slot! It is disgusting that radical so called Christians get to dictate what the rest of us watch! Where's the petition to keep this show on?

It was supposed to air tonight, instead, NBC gave us a blurb saying the /remaining/ episodes can be viewed at nbc.com, now for a special Law & Order.
I can't believe how quickly these shows are getting axed. I blame it on the Nielsen Ratings... they're having trouble adopting to the way people are watching TV, using PVRs, TiVos, and such. They can't get an accurate reading of the ratings, so execs think that no one is watching these shows, when in fact many people are! I know for a fact that when we were a Nielsen family for two years, they had trouble getting accurate readings from us.. we have 3 VCRs running and they were pratically out here every week for 6 months straight trying to adjust their software for our particular setup.

This show was great: fresh, funny at times, poignant and was a joy to watch. Unfortunately, some hypocritical fundamentalistas want to dictate their tastes on everyone else. Wake up. This was a drama! Not a reality show (although I'm sure that a lot of these bigoted Christian families have worse going on behind closed doors.

I enjoyed the show and got a few laughs out of it. The so called christian right don't want us to think these things happen in their families they just don't want the rest of America to see it and second guess them. I know personally some christian friends who have some of the same issues the show portrayed in their families. There is a lot worse trash on tv than this little show. Let hope they resurrect the show on some cable channel where the Right has little influence.
