Even though NBC says Sorkin won't be returning, USA TODAY is reporting:

"...Wells would like creator Aaron Sorkin, who left after the fourth season, to write the finale but is doubtful because of Sorkin's immersion in a pilot."

So I guess it is still possible.

Wells may have his lips sealed about the winner, but I can't imagine anyone thinks Santos will lose.

If Aaron Sorkin and Tommy Schlamme are not returning Wells may well fall back on hackneyed plotlines tried on other Wells shows. He might have an airliner crash near the Whitehouse (surely there's lot's of crashed airplane footage left over from old episodes of ER that can be re-used.) The plane could be piloted by Sam Seaborn. The series died with the departure of Sorkin anyway and has needed to be laid to rest.

A Sam Seaborn spinoff would make sense if NBC does it right. If NBC does it wrong, well, then it's "Lyon's Den."

It all depends on whether or not Lowe has time? According to IMDb, he's not exactly working up a storm these days! He needs to suck it up and return to the best thing he ever had acting-wise.

After last night's nuclear meltdown episode Vinick's chances of winning seem rather slim (from a fictional point of view); however, this liberal hopes they have Vinick as the winner. It would seem more realistic since two-term presidents are often followed by a different party. Also, the writers have done a much better job writing Vinick's character, except for last night, than Santos' character. It seemed to me the writers were planning a GOP win all along. Now, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

rob lowe should come back without him and sorkin the show lost if. If sorkin won't come back at least give us Sam Seaborn. I hope Rob decides to come back.Its the only way to end it right.

USA Today reported this in this morning's paper about how Leo's death would play into the final shows:

"Writers had to rework those scripts to include McGarry's death, which will come as a result of a heart attack. McGarry, who had a heart attack last season, will be remembered at a funeral and memorial service in episode 18. Wells hopes to shoot it in Washington.
The writers also had to figure out how McGarry's death would affect the election. 'If it happens that close to the election, when everything is printed on the ballot, everyone believed you would just go with the presidential candidate,' Wells says."
