Okay. I have changed my mind. My TiVo is
breaking down and I thought I would replace it with a DirecTV DVR system. But, due to an overwhelming response from either
TiVo fans or DirecTV DVR haters, I have cancelled my order for a new DirecTV DVR.You guys rock for telling me your frustrations with the new recording system. I decided to give up DirecTV and buy two TiVos (there are huge rebates on TiVo.com right now) and get cable.
So... now that you've helped me decide to buy a new TiVo, you can send the checks to...

I recently spoke with a DirecTV rep. It was CLEARLY stated thatDirecTV WILL continue to support the DirecTV Tivo DVR's that are out there in there customers homes far past 2007. They have NO intention of forcing there customers to replace there Tivo DVR. BUT, all new dvr's WILL BE the new DirecTV DVR that was recently released.
I myself am very happy to know that since I own 4 DirecTV Tivo's! and I couldnt be happier! Most everyone I know has the DirecTV Tivos, a few ordered another dvr from them THINKING it was going to be another Tivo. Once it arrived and was installed, they called DirecTV back and told them to come get the piece of crap, DirecTV PROMPTLY sent a new DirecTV DVR with Tivo. So I guess they still have some in stock, you just have to DEMAND ONE. I figure IF one is perdsistant DirecTV will give in.

If you haven't boughten it yet, I suggest going through your cable company for a DVR. Better yet, if you have HDTV (which if you don't get it NOW!) you can get a HD-DVR through your cable company for a monthly fee. Mine's awesome, and much cheaper then D* or E*. I've also owned 2 Tivo's (series 2) which both crashed and died on me. I bought a ReplayTV as well and it crashed and died on me also. I gave up on the company DVRs since they all for some reason died on me and went with a HD-DVR from my cable companies. That's the route I suggest you go. Anyway, the Tivo software is great if the hardware doesn't die on you. Enjoy. :)

DirecTV is updating their DVR with more fixes/updates/etc , very soon, to address many of the stated 'problems'.
90-min rewind, overall better desing (I almost throw up when I see the goofy, cartoony design TiVo has), and much better button placement on the remove (play in the center), as well as turning the console off and let it record without it being on.
It sounds like you're going to be missing out and will be using outdated hardware.

That's the best news. So reassuring - particularly because the post abuse when the DirectTV DVR goes ape would be severe.

Cable is terrible. At least Adelphia is. And it is expensive. Why pay more for worse quality?

Don't ditch DirecTV!!! That's throwing out the baby with the bathwater. DirecTV's own DVRs may suck, but TiVo-based DirecTV PVRs are still readily available. I think there is still a $100 rebate available that makes them free. Check out valueelectronics.com.

Panasonic's hard drive recorder blows all the competition away...more features, better quality, more versatility. Do some more research.

Welcome to the real TiVo cult. :-)
Since you're getting two units, I recommend you leap immediately into networking them to benefit from multi-room viewing (MRV) - moving shows between the units.
And all the other network features DirecTV had been denying you as a DirecTiVo user - TiVoToGo, web based scheduling, music and photos, Home Media Engine (you need to check out http://www.galleon.tv/ and http://www.apps.tv/ to start), Yahoo photos, weather, and traffic, Fandango movie tickets, Live365 music, broadband content delivery, and more.
If you go WiFi I second the recommendation for the TiVo branded 11g adapters - by far the best choice to use with TiVo.
Panasonic's systems lack most of the features TiVo has. I also don't see how the DirecTV DVR Plus's UI is better than TiVo's - the tabbed UI is terrible. So many users can't even find the basic functions because nothing is clear.
I know a number of people who have said they'll be dumping DirecTV when the Series3 CableCARD HDTV system comes out later this year, since they're more loyal to TiVo than to DirecTV.
With all the new flexibility you'll have with real TiVo boxes, check out http://www.tivolovers.com/info

wait, wait, wait!!! Don't rush and buy two Tivos just yet. Tivo Series 3 is coming out later this year with support for HD and CableCARD. All I'm saying is: "Slow down and consider this". Here's more info: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060106-5915.html
