Adults of "a certain age" (translation:
30 and older) might remember a CBS current-events program called In The News, which aired in between the
network's Saturday morning cartoons. These short reports were able to inform young viewers about the news of the week
without talking down to them or going over their heads. Most people will remember the program, though, for the
distinctive voice of its narrator, Christopher Glenn, who narrated and/or reported over 5,000 episodes of the
broadcast, which ran from 1971-1984.Now comes word that Glenn, who currently works for CBS Radio, is set to retire next month, after 35 years at CBS News (that's as long as I've been alive, for crissakes!). I for one enjoyed In The News, but I rooted for Carter to win against Ford when I was 5, so maybe I was a ready-made audience for the program.
[Thanks to my brother Rich for the tip!]

Christopher,
I love your voice. I was truly saddened to hear that you won't be my wake-up voice in the morning. I once filled out a survey for KCBS Radio in San Francisco and put my main reason for tuning in was your voice and the professionalism you imparted to your listeners. Your voice conveys emotion both serious and humorous and I'll seriously miss you. Thank you for your time and most importanly - your voice of our nation and the world. Best of luck.

Christopher Glenn was the best. Hopefully he will continue to use his talents, even if part-time in his
"retirement" from CBS Radio. I remember listening to his delivery of the news over the years and his voice
was unique. Hopefully, in this day and time, a man of
67 with his talents is not through. I always respected his work and admired his voice which was certainly a special gift. Only a few people really have distinct voices of an extremely defined quality...his was one. ---bill histed

Mr. Glenn,
I don't know if you will ever read this, but I felt that it was important for me to write this to you. I remember vividly, IN THE NEWS, and as a young boy (now 42), really looked forward to it on TV. I feel like I have grown up with you. Please know that you will be missed by me and many others who have grown up with your voice in our ear, and your smooth delivery on our minds. I felt like I knew you and that is the best compliment I can give. Please enjoy your retirement, and I wish you all the best!

Christopher Glenn's voice ranks right up there with all my favorites from the days of radio when people's attention spans could deal with 15 minutes of straight news. When I was small I didn't understand what the news meant, but the importance of it was certainly conveyed by the wonderful voices of the veteran radio newscasters of the '40s and '50s. I think Christopher Glenn's voice was the last of the great ones. It was an insult to all of them when the "World News," which can hardly be called that anymore, was reduced to a 3 min. "blurb." Christopher Glenn will definitely be missed. Now, how do we get BBC radio to start broadcasting again to NA so we can again get decent news coverage? It's our last hope!

I just learned of Mr. Glenn's retirement plans today. While I am sad that he is hanging up his mic, I am happy that he is doing what he wants to do. I grew up with his insightful reports on Saturday mornings back in the '70's with "In The News". I learned quite a bit from those broadcasts. He made `cartoon Saturdays` not a complete waste of time. Enjoy your retirement, Mr. Glenn; you deserve it.

Mr. Glenn, you are a living part of the greatness that was CBS News going back to the days of Ed Murrow. We listeners, and CBS, are surely going to miss hearing that golden voice of yours every day. But here's a thought: now that you're retired, why not dabble in voiceover work for PBS, History Channel, Discovery Channel etc.? My voiceover students have cited you on several occasions as one of the great voices they want to sound like...along with James Earl Jones and Orson Welles! You could have a whole new career from a home studio, and we'd all be the richer for having a chance to continue hearing those magnificent tones that emanate from you. Thank you for so many years of service to America's radio and TV audience.
Best regards,

Without a doubt, Christopher Glenn's radio voice is the best. Smooth and soothing, Mr. Glenn always conveyed the emotion and facts of a story as if you were there. I remember that voice from the "In the News" series from many years ago. Above all, his loyalty to CBS, which I still believe to be the top news organization, comes through on his every sign off, "Christopher Glenn, CBS News." You will be missed on our airwaves.

Chis cannot be replaced.
While there is residual talent at CBS news, newer voices at his alma mater are far from his caliber.
In attempts to fill the void, a dial scan still finds a
formidable talent pantheon at ABC (Radio) News.
However, at upstart Fox, most of the anchors there are
broadcast midgets, omitting basic facts, mispronouncing
proper names and blatantly sensationalist.
Fox gives this former broadcaster a headache.

I have enjoyed listening to Christopher Glenn from the Saturday morning "In the News" to the "CBS World Roundup" on radio. He was cool to listen to on those segments between Saturday morning cartoons. I will miss his voice on the radio each night as I drive home from work. Best wishes to him.
