Bob talked last month about Fred Savage's new show, Crumbs, which
debuts tomorrow night at 9:30EST on ABC. Bob didn't have a lot of info on the show at that time, but thanks to a
great interview with Savage over
on CNN, we now have more Fredtabulous scoop for you. Crumbs is a show about a dysfunctional family (I know,
shocking to have a dysfunctional family in a sitcom, but bear with me). Jane Curtin plays the mom, who just got
released from the mental hospital. Dad (William Devane) is expecting a baby with his girlfriend. One son is dead, one
(Eddie McClintock) stuck around to run the family restaurant, and the third (Savage) is a gay prodigal son returning
home from a failed Hollywood career.
Savage has spent the past ten years or so producing and directing, including Disney's Phil of the Future and Nickolodeon's Drake and Josh, but finally decided to get back into acting because he was "tantalized" by Crumbs. I'm tantalized by the show's description, and also by the idea of seeing Savage in front of the camera again. I loved, loved, loved me some Wonder Years, in large part due to what Savage brought to the character of Kevin. I'm curious to see what he brings to this new show, and if it will live up to the high expectations Savage has for it. Oh, and judging from the pics of him lately, the 29-year-old actor has aged pretty darn well, too. Just look at that face - he still looks like sweet-faced Kevin, just more grown up and, well, manly. I'm just saying.
Speaking of Savage and Wonder Years, let's roll out the TV Squad Memory Machine: what was your favorite Wonder Years episode? I asked my husband and we both said the same thing: Margaret Farquar.

Some people were saying Arrested Devlopment has nothing to be paired with should ABC pick it up, but it sounds like this would be a fine pairing if this show is any good.

The LA Times has review today here: http://www.calendarlive.com/tv/cl-wk-crumbs12jan12,0,2424458.story?coll=cl-tv-features (Registration may be requried.)
Here's a telling line from the review though:
" "Soap" went for big emotional moments, as did the classics "All in the Family" and "MASH." But here it seems too big too soon."
And there's your problem with TV today. Shows are so rarely given time to build up to where they want to get. I'm sure the creators have plans for the characters and they want to get the characters there over a natural period of time. But now if you don't score immediately in your first two episode, you're toast, which may explain why Crumbs may have ended up taking a "dive right in to the deep end" approach that may hurt it even more.
That said I'm looking forward to it myself.

You make it sound like Fred hasn't been in front of the TV camera since "Wonder Years"... lest we forget a great little sitcom that was axed before it really took off: "Working":

I loved that show! It was nice to see him on TV again.
