While there has been some speculation that the upcoming
fifth season of 24 may be the last one, or at least the end of the road for Kiefer Sutherland, there may still
be some time left for the actor to continue portraying the indestructible Jack Bauer. That's right - a film. Numerous
sources including CHUD and Entertainment Weekly are reporting that
the producers of the show have a Jack Bauer film franchise in the works. Sutherland sounds like he's completely
on-board saying that "if we could compress all the energy we spread over 24 hours of programming, and put that
into 2 [hours], I think we'd knock your socks off."
Well consider my socks as your humble servants, awaiting to be knocked off to wherever you see fit. If this actually pans out and gets made, it's gonna be huge. What kind of story would it have is the real question though... any ideas? I'm thinking something that involves space shuttles. I want to see Jack fighting someone with no gravity.

I don't watch 24, so I can't judge the merits of a 24 movie (um, what would they call it? "2"? Or, more realistically, "93 Minutes"?), but turning TV shows into movies drives me nuts, and not just because I can't think of too many good movies that have come from TV shows. At its worst, it's a cynical bid to bleed fans dry. At its best, I think it shows a lack of respect for television as a medium--television and film are each suited to tell different kinds of stories, but films automatically have a certain credibility that television shows have to work very hard to earn. Granted, it works the other way, too, across a spectrum that runs from MASH to My Big Fat Greek Life, but when it's a TV show first, it seems like there's always a sense that making the movie is the pinnacle of what a television show can hope to achieve.

Making a movie seems to me like it would defeat the purpose. What makes this show unique is that the entire thing from beginning to end is in "real time".
Yeah, sure, you could do that in a movie, too, but first of all, a lot less happens in two hours and twenty-four, and secondly, they did this already. (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0179626/) (Blech!)

I for one can not think how they could take a program that requires you to watch 24 hours over a season and compress it into a 2 hour movie and can not see paying good money watching a show that comes on tv, not unless they do a cross over X-Files meet 24, and put in LOTS OF Aliens

I think it's worth a shot, at the very least it doesn't deserve to be condemned out of hand. Just because it's Jack Bauer is no reason to assume they'll make it real-time, and even if they do, there are examples of said premise that worked on the big screen: Run Lola Run, High Noon, Outland (ok, that one's debatable). All it takes is a little imagination, and it's evident that the people who write 24 have scads of that.
But there's no reason to assume that they won't just take the character and expand it, not the premise. And tv shows have made as many good films in the past as bad ones, eg: Firefly-Serenity, The Brady Bunch (ew), etc. For every lousy example you can name, there's at least one great one.
Bottom line: I'll wait and see. I'd pay to see it in the theater.
