Nothing like being timely; as all good geeks know, tonight
marks the return of not only the brilliant Battlestar Galactica for the second half of it's second season, but
also Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis. Stargate SG1 is now the longest running science
fiction series in history, this being its 10th season premiere. Atlantis is quickly gaining attention and is
one of the most successful spin-offs ever. As with almost all 'convince me to watch its', I've only seen a couple
episodes of Stargate, and that was years and years ago, back when MacGyver still led the team. I've never seen
an episode of Stargate Atlantis, but heard nothing but good things about it. So you guys tell me - am I missing
something great? Would I be lost if I started now, in the middle of the show's run? So sound off guys! I know we've got
a lot of fans from both Stargates, so I wanna hear from you. Convince me to watch it!Stargate and/or Stargate Atlantis: Convince me to watch it

Hi:
I have seen a few episodes of this TV show, “STARGATE”.
This is a science fiction story about the discover of a gateway machine that can transport humans to other world and the adventures in meeting and interacting with aliens.
This is a very interesting show.
The only problem is that all the episodes sound and look alike.
There is little or nothing to differentiate each episode from the other.
This can create boredom and compel fans to drop off.
Besides Star Trek The Voyager, this is among one of my most favorite TV shows because it is entertaining and has sociological, scientific and philosophical messages to convey.
I recommend this TV show.

Well, the only real reason I have cable are the Gates (Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis). Sure, I flip channels and watch other shows on occasion, if not regularly (usually things on the "geek tv" channels and the Law and Order series), but the Gates are the only shows I watch without fail (or record to watch later if I'm out). Those two series are worth it!

Ah okay, you want to know WHY (just read your recent comment) you should watch the two Gate series.
Without going into details of plot synopses for various seasons or episodes, I'll say that they have and meet very high standards for production values, acting, and scripts. All of the characters are believable (sci-fi or not), as well as highly likeable. Besides being an excellent action adventure/sci-fi show, it's also a great drama or comedy, depending on the episode.
If I had to recommend a single episode to exemplify Stargate SG-1, it would be season 7's "Heroes" parts I and II (okay, it's a two-parter). Some of the best TV EVER. Borrow it from someone who has the DVDs, rent it from one of the online services, or just buy the whole season. It's worth it for this story.

Atlantis is okay. I mainly watch it because the Wraith are cool and Teyla and Ronan rock.
As for SG-1...this show ROCKS. I'm still catching up to it (lots of seasons to catch up with!!) and I still love it!! I watch it every single day, and every Friday I anxiously await for the clock to chime 9pm (okay, so I don't have a chiming clock--you get the idea). At that point, it doesn't matter what I'm doing, I stop it (even if I'm dying...dying can wait!!!) and turn the tv to channel 50. Stargate SG-1. And this season is even COOLER!! (Which is really saying a lot.) The Ori have been struggling to convert people without actually messing with them (rules from the Ancients...not quite sure who they are, but they're strong). Now--EVIL CHILD!! Daughter of a human and the Ori (kinda like an evil Jesus....except female...), and played by a super-hottie (Morena Baccarin). She truly and completely believes that she is doing what is right and good--killing millions because they refuse to believe. But she's still human--still succeptible to change. To suggestion.
Will she continue killing? Will she realize what it is that she is really doing? Can her mother get through to her before it's too late? Can the SG-1 team stop the evil tirade of death in time??? FIND OUT NEXT TIME!!
....Ahem. *cough* Yes. I say you should watch it.

I really like Atlantis, but since I've been spoiled through the Canadian airing of Season 2.5, I must say that now is the worst time possible to begin watching. Besides the one tonight, all the rest are remarkably dull filler episodes--I have no doubt that you'd never watch Atlantis again if all you caught were a few weeks of the new episodes. If you choose to dive into Atlantis, start from the pilot. It's only 1.5 seasons long, so it won't take long to catch up.

SG1 may be the longest running North American Sci-Fi show in history, but it has a long way to go to reach the world-wide title... Dr. Who was on the air for 26 seasons before the BBC cancelled it (that is not including the recent series).

This is actually not SG-1's 10th season starting tonight, but the second half of season 9. There were 10 episodes in the summer, and starting tonight, another 10, completing the 20-ep season.

Ah, just watch the early years on DVD. They are okay, the last couple seasons have really slacked off as various members took time off.
Better yet, just watch BSG and old DVDs of farscape, you'll be happier for it.

I have heard the Stargate claims before I am just wondering what disqualifies Doctor Who's 26 straight seasons as longest running Sci-Fi?

The best things about both of the Stargates for me are the continuing story and the character development. unlike most sci-fi of the past, each week is not a random adventure. There are some odd shows, but most of the air time is devoted to plot development. At the same time, the writers have richly developed the varied characters of the show. It is difficult to jump into that type of show after numerous years, but if you really want to catch up so that you can fully enjoy it, check out the stargate primer at gateworld.net. It is a good brief summary of all major developments. Here is the full link.

Stargate SG-1 is going through a bit of a rough transition from the Richard Dean Anderson era. Ben Browder, however, is doing a great job, and exploring the previous seasons on DVD will help you appreciate the rich tapestry of ongoing storylines and mythology (Ancients, Go'a'uld, Jaffa, Orii, etc.) and good characters that have kept this show pretty strong, even now. With Stargate Atlantis, you're not so far from its inception and while Stargate SG-1 gave it life, it has its own independent life now. It's just an excellent show, with David Hewlett (McKay) and Joe Flanigan (Sheppard) having great rapport, strong leadership from Torri Higginson (Weir) and Mitch Pileggi (Caldwell), and great aliens with their own interesting history in Rachel Luttrell (Teyla) and Jason Momoa (Ronon.) The series being set a mind-blowing distance from Earth, based on technology we can sort of use even though we've barely begun to understand it, plus terrifying enemies, makes for some interesting human vulnerabilities and interaction.

Halden, the claims of SG1 being the longest running scifi show is for the American brodacast. Can't really count Dr Who in that.

Best advice I could give you is to buy the boxsets one by one, they are cheap. I recently started collecting them and been watching the whole series again, awesome. Buy season 1, if you like it, go on to 2, and so on and so on. As for atlantis, wait till it comes up in SG! to start watching it. so that you get to watch in proper time line. If you start watching the series now without watching the past, you will enjoy it but likely be asking your friends who have been watching the whole thing about a lot of stuff.

I would think that Doctor Who is disqualified because it wasn't 26 straight seasons and because those 26 seasons consisted of about half a dozen episodes each as opposed to Stargates 20.

Hi Thomas,
You seem to be mis-understanding how Dr. Who is structured. It was on the air for 26 years (1963 - 1989) and in that 26 seasons, it had 159 serial stories, most of them 4+ episodes in length.
Then in 1996 there was a movie made (which many Who fans don't like to remember) then last year, Season 27 was shown, and this year we get season 28 (and no, I can't wait).
SG1 and Dr Who are both good series, and I like them both for really different things (and in the case of Dr Who it depends on which Dr we are talking about).

just buy the boxed dvd sets. sg-1 is dead since season-9 - the new cast sucks, RDA is missed.
atlantis' season-1 was okay, season-2 isn't any good.
