After a month's respite from searching for karma, Earl is back to righting his past wrongs. This week, we find out
that when Earl was married to Joy, he wasn't much of a father to her two boys. Although he wasn't their biological
father, he wasn't much of a role model, either. As a result, the boys' troublesome behavior motivates Joy to enroll
them at the "Right Choice Ranch" in order to get them on the right path, but because their last name is
Hickey, they are denied entry into the program.
We learn that as a kid, Earl also was at the ranch, along with brother Randy, but they never seemed to draw any lessons to lead better lives. In fact, a barn ended up being burned down while they were there, which still resonates at the ranch. Earl decides to attempt to cross off number 164 on his list--burned down a barn at the Right Choice Ranch.
Earl and Randy decide to go back to the ranch, but we see that Randy has an abnormal fear of birds. After speaking with the ranch owner, Earl is given the task of building a "Racist Ostrich Pen" which will be used in an exercise to help kids get over their intolerance. However, Randy is not much of a help because he is too freaked out over ostriches. Because of his good deed, Joy can bring her boys to the ranch.
But things still don't get much better for Earl. Through a series of mishaps, including having a pen go through his hand, Earl says Randy has been the source of his life turning wrong beginning in 1982, and that Randy should perform the deeds on Earl's list. Randy performs a series of tasks, and finally admits responsibility for starting the fire that burned down the barn.
At the same time, Earl decides to do something with Joy's sons to make up for his inattentiveness, but even that fails. However, the boys simply forgive Earl. Suddenly, Earl learns that if you love someone, you can forgive them. He forgives Randy for burning down the barn, and all seems right in the world. It was a long month without the show, and it was nice to see a new episode that had some really funny moments, especially when Earl decides to go to an AC/DC concert instead of taking the boys to "Mystery Fun Land". A new night, but the same old fun.

It was great to get Earl back but I am not sure I enjoy it competing with CSI. Thank God for Time Shift.

I thought Earl accidentally shot himself in the hand with a nail gun, not had a pen through his hand.

It was a nail, because Caterina said that if he did it on his other hand that she should come down to her church and make some people happy (i.e. stigmata).
