From the Totally Unsubstantiated Rumor file: Page Six is
"reporting" this morning that a cashed-strapped Courtney Love - slimmed down and drug free but apparently
broke as all get out – is working on selling the rights to her late husband Kurt Cobain's musical output. This
comes after a messy, multi-year battle between Love and Cobain's former band mates Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic (as
well as original drummer Chad Channing, at least according to the Sixers) over the future of the Nirvana catalogue: if
I remember correctly, the boys wanted to put everything in the hands of the fans, whilst Love wanted to slowly parcel
out the outakes and rarities to ensure the maximum padding for Frances Bean's college fund. Page Six says Love is
looking for $100 million. Now: through just a bit of digging, I found a 2 week old report in London's Sunday Mirror suggesting that, first of all, Love could earn somewhat more than that (£70 million , or about $115 million), and secondly, that a chunk of that change is coming from none other than Miss Martha Stewart. The mirror claims that the "disgraced US lifestyle guru" (their words, not mine) is picking up a quarter share in the catalogue as a long-term (and no doubt highly lucrative) investment. Take this for what you will – it is, after all, a tale told by two tabloids – but it wouldn't hurt to start combing the Nirvana discography for new Martha theme song possibilities.

I don't think they're mismatched at all. Martha's been to prison. She's been divorced. Rumor has it she's less than pleasant to work for. And perfectly enough both Martha and Courtney have an over inflated vision of themselves, and both love the smell of money. Oh wait, that sounds like a song.

It's sad that the rights of this music is left in the hands of someone not in the band - let alone the fact that it's courtney love (shudder). This kind of greed in the music industry is part of what led to Kobain's suicide in the first place, so it's especially disheartening that this battle has gone on as long and wound up the way it did. I'm surprised Love got the rights - last I heard Grohl & co. were working to have her declared mentally incompetant to handle the rights. If I recall, you're right in saying their intentions were to give the music to the fans (in some sort of massive collection, I believe, but still better than trickling releases out to grab as many fan dollars as possible).
Fun to talk about music around here - maybe TVSquad should start Musicsquad like Joystiq did with their new babies.
