Miss Iceland crowned Miss World -- does anyone care?

Quick, raise your hand if you watched the Miss World Pageant! No one? Okay, then, raise your hand if you care who won! Yeah, that's what I thought. Nonetheless, I feel obliged to report, since she no doubt spent many hours in the gym, adjusting her cleavage, and getting her makeup and highlights done, that Miss Iceland, Unnur Birna Vilhjalmsdottir (say that three times fast before you've had your morning caffeine fix!) won the coveted title on Friday. So, yay Iceland!

Miss Iceland is a part-time police officer in her real-life who wants to be a lawyer, so don't even think about getting handsy with her just because she paraded around in front of the, well, the entire world apparently - though I'm not sure if anyone actually watched - in her finest bathing suit and evening apparel. I have no idea what her special talent was, or if they even have the talent portion of the pageant these days, but really - wasn't the talent part and the part where they have to answer questions and sound reasonably intelligent really just to disguise the fact that they're parading women around like meat and picking winners based on physical attributes? When's the last time you saw a plus-size, software engineer or rocket scientist as Miss World? I'm just saying.

No. I don't care. Mathematically speaking, in the set of things that I care about, the Miss World pageant is not a member of that set.
Or better portrayed by the expression :
Things I don't care about = {Miss World, A Very Brady Christmas, Small Wonder on DVD, ...}

aww, so bitter you poor thing....well, if you don't care, why did you watch? I actually think you do care, why would you 1. watch the show, 2. move your butt from your sofa to the desk and 3. write an article about it online? Because you DO care haha. The world talks of icelandic women as the finest women in the world (apart from people like you and oprah winfrey). So go attend to your readneck dutyes...

hehe, well Kim Voynar is a woman, so i bet it's not because she wants to be with Unnur.
But i bet why she thinks "nobody cares" is because americans probably only watch "Miss Universe" which is an american franchise owned by Donald Trump but Miss World was founded in U.K. and draws more viewers from europe(and the rest of the world).
And just as a sidenote America has won the miss universe contest a record seven times! ;) Of the 53 times the contest has been held, more than any other country..

I will have to ask forgiveness becouse some of my countrymen(mostly) and women do not have the mental capasity to say something that a caveman wouldn't have tought up and just spitt out words like "WE OWNZ0R YOU!" and "lol, you suck".

Why is it that everytime somebody writes something "bad" about Iceland on the net, everybody becomes so patriotic and want's to defend the reputation of the great nation of iceland...? All the guy is saying is that he doesn't believe that anybody watches the Miss World Pageant anymore... To be honest I don't even think it was showed here where I live (denmark). Cheer up dudes and dudettes! Hakuna Matata :-)

I agree with Helgi! the man is just saying nobody cares about MissWorld which is right! They don't even show it on tv in Europe of what I know.
However I want to comment on the fact that USA has won the contest 7 times, well Iceland has (only) won it 3 times... BUT the USA is about 1064 times bigger then Iceland :-)

And that comment about them showing themselves in bathing suits....it didn't cross your mind that maybe this is what these girls want to do? What about bathing suits or underware models,are they so awful? Why dont' you write something about 14 year old girls trying to be sexy to sell fashion?!

Folks, I didn't insult Unnur. She's a lovely girl, she's probably very bright, and I'm sure she worked very hard to win the pageant. Great to see so much Icelandic pride about her.

My issue isn't with Unnur, it's with the concept of beauty pageants in general. As the mother of three girls, I don't like the message beauty pageants (and Hollywood, and most advertisments) promote to our daughters -- that they should be judged primarily on their physical attributes. Women of all shapes, sizes and colors are beautiful, and we should be judging people based on more than how they look.

It's not about being "jealous" of pageant contestants. It's about not liking a system that judges women based on their physical appeal (based on someone's decision about what constitutes that "ideal") and not on what's inside them. It's about sending the message to little girls that they aren't perfect if they don't meet some physical ideal, and that they need to hurt themselves with eating disorders, etc, to attain that ideal.

I would love to see humanity move past judging people this way -- and I'd love also to see people move past the need to attack people for expressing an opinion. You can express your own opinion - that it's awesome that Unnur won the pageant, and yay Iceland! - without resorting to insulting someone you don't even know for their opinion about beauty pageants, yes?

And for the record - I didn't watch the pageant, so far as I know it wasn't even broadcast here.
