It's looking more and more likely that Katie Couric will be jumping networks to anchor the CBS Evening News (good riddance!). Which means there is going to be a big, fat opening on Today. I'd like to go ahead and nominate my favorite, female news personality for the position: Soledad O'Brien. I've been a fan of hers since she anchored The Site on MSNBC, with a computerized Leo Laporte. In 2003, NBC lost her to CNN, where she has been hosting American Morning. Who can blame her for leaving? Back then, it appeared as though Katie Couric would never leave Today and Soledad probably felt like she was in a dead-end job on the weekend edition of Today, which covers much lighter topics and less news than the weekday edition. Soledad has a hard news background and she's terrific at asking tough questions. She doesn't back down to news makers, but she also doesn't make a spectacle of herself (ahem, Anderson Cooper) while asking the questions. She's a smart woman with a good head on her shoulders, has a warm personality and a sense of humor. Soledad can also maneuver smoothly through the fluffy stuff--a requirement for anyone hosting Today. Plus, she has that "working mommy" thing going for her, which will hopefully keep her from getting too caught up in her own celebrity, and will also help her to identify with most of Today's audience. As co-host of Today, she would receive a heck of a lot more attention (and money!) than she gets on American Morning, which, let's face it, is not a household word. Now that I've written all this, I realize that Soledad would make an even better host of CBS Evening News.
Who do you think should replace Katie Couric?

I totally agree with you. Loved her on the weekend edition of Today. Not that I ever watch the today show more than like once a month, but it would be good to see her back.

Putting Katie Couric into the anchor position on CBS Evening News will, I think, be a bad decision on the part of CBS in the long run. Katie has been known to give a hard-nosed interview, but it's more of the gotcha-question kind of interview not any sort of ability with drawing answers out for hard questions. Couric has always been better at the fluff than with the real news. Of course, CBS is not looking for a hard-nosed journalist; they're just looking for Couric's name and face recognition. Hell, it might work for the ratings, but who knows. Couric may be popular with the breakfast crowd, but will she be as popular with the dinner crowd?

There's also this to remember: Matt Lauer has lived in Katie Couric's very large shadow for years. Like Bryant Gumble before him, Lauer will want to be the biggest dick on the screen so he won't want anyone who will overshadow him. If he has any say in the pick it could very well be weak little Ann Curry.

Campbell Brown. Works well with the light stuff on Weekend Today *and* has the proper gravity in her delivery to do well when she substitutes for Brian Williams. Her reporting credentials are top notch; the work she did in New Orleans was solid and professional, and a heck of a lot less emotional than Cooper and Williams. Heck, if I were Les Moonves, I'd hire *her* instead of Katie.

They need someone so sacrine that you get a cavity just from watching her interviews. Someone who cares more about why Nick and Jessica broke up than say.... what's going on in Iraq.
Does anyone actually watch these morning shows or is it just something for moms to keep in the background while they send the kids off to school? It's not much different that radio morning shows that have more pointless talk than music.
'Course, I don't know if I could handle hard news at that hour of the morning.

Soledad is way too smart and sexy to replace that sugary little vapid troll Couric.
you can get any perpetually smiling dunce to be a host of a morning show. Maybe call cheri o'teri (snl), she's not working and she used to nail the part in skits. Nah, even cheri wouldn't want to subvert her brain 10 hours a week.

Katie is very well suited for the Today Show. Unless CBS is going to make their evening news a 30 minute version of that, I think it is a bad fit for both CBS and Katie.
I do agree about Campbell Brown though. She is very good at what she does and I think would make a very good replacement if Katie does leave.
Besides I would miss Katie's legs. For a almost 49 year old woman, those are some nice legs.

My vote is for Solidad.
And yes, the Today show is something to have on after the news is over and before I run out the door in the morning.
You don't have to pay too much attention to it, which is a requirement for my mornings.

Ashleigh Banfield. Before she died her hair brown and put on the glasses, she did a local morning news show in Dallas. She's pretty, funny, hip and can do the fluff and the funk seamlessly with the serious news.

I use to like Katie. But, she is way too biased to do what she does. Her down to earth, humble attitude is a thing in the past. She just needs to go.

Remember when it was rumored that Jon Stewart might be tapped to replace Dan Rather? That was infinitely more interesting.

Katie Couric has been a bright spot on the Today
show all these years. She has shown dignity in the
face of great personal tragedy. If it is time for
her to try new things I wish her well. I think
Campbell Brown would do a great job with Matt
Lauer. Any one on the list would be well.
But please NOT Ann Curry. It is impossible for
her to do a live interview.

I love Katie and she is a top notch professional!
For her to go over to CBS would be a GREAT LOSS for NBC. I have come to really appreciate Campbell Brown she is and will continue to be a huge assesst for NBC. As far as Alexis Glick...someone get that Chick off the air!!!!! She gets way too much face time on the Today show. When she's on I change the channel.

Remember the audience. Anyone replacing Katie must appeal to the early morning news seeker AND the ramp-up to Regis and Kelly (among other soft ball talk programs). The candidate must have the skills of a street reporter, the heart of a "mom" and the instant appeal necessary to attract the casual viewer. The most remarkable thing about Katie is her ability to "shift gears" and move effortlessly from news-lite to important political and social matters. I say bring on Solidad. She fits the bill and her ambiguious ethnicity wil score for NBC as well.

The comments about Ann Curry surprise me. I like her very much. She is personable and sensitive in the interviews they have given her to do. I don't think she has had the opportunity for enough hard news. I agree that Ashleigh Banfield would be a good replacement, too.
