Rumors are swirling today that Katie Couric may break with NBC to become Dan Rather's replacement as the main anchor of CBS Evening News. Broadcasting and Cable is reporting that CBS has really turned on the charm, offering Katie more than her current $13 million contract as the co-host of Today. The top execs at Viacom, which owns CBS, are reportedly ready to spend some serious cash to fix the tarnished image of CBS news. Remember that inaccurate report about President Bush's military service? Yeah, that pretty much did them in. Couric's contract with NBC expires next year, and she has been quoted as saying she'll have a decision by the end of this year. Uh, Katie, the clock is ticking.Katie's name has been dragged through the mud lately as the fight between Today and Good Morning America gets uglier and uglier, so maybe she's ready to be done with morning news. Recently, a lot of you mentioned you find Katie un-watchable, but I doubt her legs will be a featured as prominently when she's seated behind an anchor desk.
I have to admit that I'm on the fence about all this. On one hand, Katie seems a little swept up in her own fame on Today. On the other hand, there won't be a lot of time for Katie Couric-star gazing on a much more serious broadcast like CBS Evening News. The woman does have a serious news background, as she was the White House correspondent for NBC for many years. Plus, I'd definitely like to see a woman in what has traditionally been a man's job...

Please! No!
Not that I actually watch much network news these days, but with all the real talent out there is Katie Couric the best CBS can do? This choice just shows that CBS is not interested in strengthening its nightly news program; just putting a pretty, well-know face before viewers. Granted, Couric may draw some viewers at first, but if she continues with the sort of flighty, sugar-coated crap she does on Today, it won't last.

Katie as a network anchor screams pablum reporting to me.
Her "hard news" cred, if she ever had any, has been vaporized by too much sacharine morning show stories.
I see her more as competing with Oprah than with Brian Williams.

I can't imagine that CBS News would be willing to shell out the amount of money necessary to rework the sets and reconfigure the lighting to focus on Her Legliness.

Katie Couric would be a wonderful anchor. It is time for her to leave the Today Show. Think about it, more money, less stress and not having to get up at 4 am. She will be the next anchor at CBS, take it to the bank. Wanna bet? Jeff
