Well, you can't say that Saturday Night Live has given up on this year. They've booked comedian Dane Cook, one of the funnier stand-ups working today, to host the show on December 3.In this article, Cook talks about the offer to host, explains why he turned down an offer to audition for SNL in 1996, and also quips about his recent article in People's "Sexiest Man Alive" issue (no, he wasn't rated Sexiest Man. But he was apparently in the running).
Anyone who's seen Dane Cook's stand-up can attest that he brings an intensity that is rarely seen even amongst the best of his peers. His humor can also be edgy at times; he once thought that the Catholic church should market communion wafers as a cereal and call it Christ Chex. Hopefully, he'll bring some much-needed energy to a show that desperately needs it.

Isn't Saturday Night Live suppose to have famous people host their show?
Who the fuck is Dane Cook?
SNL is really dead. They really have given up.

i have to totally disagree with you, Joel. I don't think he's funny. I think he's overhyped.

While I don't think he should be hosting, I still think he's a funny guy (to a point). Plus, he's extremely thankful for everything. He has a post about it on his website, http://www.danecook.com, thanking his fans for everything and reaching his goal of being on SNL. Worth the read.

Almost forgot! Dane Cook's latest CD/DVD, Retaliation, debuted on Billboard at #4, something that hasn't been done since Steve Martin (I think). I blogged about it a few months ago at http://www.laughmachine.com/2005-08-04/dane-cook-kicking-ass-plus-interview.html

I LOVE DANE COOK! If you've never heard of him then you probably haven't been on a college campus recently. I believe he only performs on campuses around the nation and boycotts large, non-campus venues.
What?!? I hope it wasn't on my coat!

Dane Cook is one of the funniest comedians working the stages today. He's been the higlight in many otherwise bland movies and I beleive will bring a fresh breath of air to SNL. I'm definately looking forward to this and will be Tivoing it.

Holy crap I'm excited to see this. Dane Cook is one of my favourite standups, so I'm glad to see he's getting some attention. For anyone who doesn't know him, he's kind of like a 17 year old stuck in the body of a guy in his late 20s and his enthusiasm is completely unstoppable. I find he has a Will Ferrel-ish sort of presence.
I haven't been impressed with SNL so far this season because the writing has been lazy beyond comprehension, but at least they seem to be booking lots of cool guests. I watched it for Jason Lee (for a little while), so I'll definitely be tuning in for Dane.

I almost crashed my car into a tree when my local am radio program announced Dane is hosting SNL. This is a huge opportunity for this comic, who isn't a household name YET, to reach the masses who haven't been introduced to him. For those of you who say Dane who? just give him a chance. He's not only a funny guy but is most gracious when meeting his fans.

For months and months I have been singing the praises of Dane Cook. I try to get everyone who I know would have a true appreciation for him to listen. It is great after you have listened to his CD's oh...5892 times, that you can be talking or just walking around and be like..."you know what Dane Cook says about this..." It's great and sometimes your friends who have no idea who Dane is think you are really funny. SNL should be fanflippin'tastic.

I love good standup, and when I learned that Cook was scheduled on the show, my reaction was, "Dane Who?" I thought the show was one of the weakest of the year. Also, his opening monologue, which turned into one long dick joke, really blew. It reminded me of Martin Lawrence's sad crash-and-burn opening monologue from a few years back, when he degenerated into a rant about his "willy-wacker". Another low point for SNL. And James Blunt? Creepy...

Well, we've been Dane Cook fans for a few years, so we're definitely biased - and I was pretty surprised that he was hosting just because most times the host is pretty mainstream top-40. And his monologue did go on a little long - but it was funny and different, and hell, I laughed at the part about flipping a cashew into his mouth.
And he was in most of the skits and pretty damn good. A lot better than watching whatever flavor of the week B-level star standing there reading cue cards the whole time.

Dane is most fantastic, blessed, gifted and extremely grateful. Not only is he thankful and loving on every one of his fans but he's a true professional. Been a fan long before Harmful if Swallowed, turned all my peeps his way and they can't get enough. Dane is the best thing that happened to SNL. For reals. Give him a chance, there are so many sorry hacks out there and he stands alone, his comedy is easy to relate to and heee-larious! You trying being a comic, bitches!

Hysterical! That was one of the best SNL's host intro's I've seen in a very long time. Had never heard of Dane Cook, but now I'd check him out! I almost didn't watch SNL b/c I wanted a 'big name' to be hosting... But was very pleased that I tuned in!
