One of the reasons this show is so addictive, is the way the writers create big mysteries. We don't understand what is happening on the island, so we come back for little tidbits each week to see if we can conjure up a theory that makes sense. The mysteries are intense, confusing, and confounding. But, the writers are very smart. Answers to mysteries on Lost don't come simply. Once we finally get a question answered, many other questions arise. Since the writers answered the most pressing question with last week's episode, The Other 48 Days, by chronicling what happened to the other survivors of Flight 815, we can once again concentrate on the big questions that plague this show. Here are The Five biggest questions that remain unanswered on Lost (notice each question includes a handful of smaller questions):5. What is the Dharma Initiative? At the end of season one, we were all wondering what the heck was in the hatch. This season, we got to go inside the hatch where we saw Desmond inject himself with something. We also saw a stockpile of food and a modern-looking washer and dryer. We got to watch a hacked-up orientation video that just brought on more questions. Is the whole island a psychological experiment? What happens when the countdown clock is not reset after 108 minutes? Why did the shark have a Dharma tattoo?
4. What is "The Monster"? All last season, we heard what sounded like the a cross between the T-Rex in Jurassic Park and the Abominable Snowman from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Whatever it was it was big, because it shook the trees. We know that Locke saw it and smiled, and it apparently ate the pilot of Flight 815. We got to see something at the end of last season that looked like black smoke and sounded like a wench as it dragged Locke into a hole. Is that the monster? Many have speculated that it's a security system, but for what? And, why haven't we heard a peep from it so far this season?
3. What's up with the numbers? Are they cursed? How? The numbers, 4 8 15 16 23 42, play multiple roles in the show. As a sequence, they're the winning lottery numbers that brought Hurley bad luck and they're required to be entered into the computer to reset the countdown clock in the hatch. They also play roles as individual numbers. For instance: row numbers of the plane crash survivors, the flight number (815), and many, many more appearances that are all chronicled by this tireless
2. Who are "The Others"? They steal children and "good" adults. They infiltrate the plane crash survivors. They steal Walt and sink the raft. They whisper. They send up columns of black smoke. They have a boat. And twins. How did they get there? Who are they? Why are they stealing people? Are they killers? How long have they been on the island? Why can't we all just be friends?
1. What the hell is going on? Sure, it's a big question. But that's the list: the biggest questions left unanswered on Lost. This one pretty much sums up every question that I have, like, why can Locke walk? Where is this island? When is it? Why did the plane crash? Why did certain people survive? What is going on here??? I will watch Lost faithfully for years as long as this question is finally answered in the end.

Disembodied "scientists" using a combination of remote viewing, electromagnetism and collective consciousness to manipulate the islanders to save humanity from the consequences of a reversal of the earth's magnetic field? Wizards using magic, buddy. It's the same thing. "And then a miracle occurs" is not an explanation.

How come they don't have any insect bites?
How does that damn dog stay so clean?

Ive got some answers for ya:
DigitalFirefly- I think more the question of Locke's walking is more to do with how he got in the chair 4 years ago. It may be all psycholgical or even physical but to me, the trama of the crash (both physical AND psychological) healed what ever was wrong with him
Anna- When a woman becomes malnutritioned and the such, her cycle becomes different and can sometimes dissapear. Now, they have only been there less than 2 months so far so im sure they currently have enough "feminine supplies" on hand to deal with it.

I think the biggest mystery is why the current season has been so meager. While the first season had a bad habit of throwing out a new mystery every episode or so and then failing to ever come back to it in a meaningful way the current season hasn't really gone much of anywhere. Considering that the raft was destroyed last season they have: gone into the hatch and learned about Desmond and the Dharma Initiative (basically one episode's worth of plot stretched into two or three), they've met the other survivors and found that the Others are taking them and they're being led by a totally paranoid nutbag, Walt is randomly appearing around the island, Sayid was shot, the radio message on the plane was from the other survivors which frankly just makes sense. That's not a hell of a lot for about 8 episodes. A number of them basically just tread water and don't even try to advance anything.
Basically if the current season was indicative of the show nobody would have really bothered to watch it in the first place.

I agree this has indeed been an uninspiring season so far.. but the last 2 weeks started to get better. I think the big picture here is that it's pretty obvious that the producers of the show have no idea where this thing is going. How can you make the numbers the center point and then say, we'll never find out what they mean?? huh?

I keep wondering about Desmond and the French woman who seem to still be running around on the place. What happened to them? And where did Desmond think he was going when he ran off so fast?
Considering they landed on a "deserted" island, the survivors sure seem to have a lot of company.
