Didn't know there was such a demand for this show, but apparently Universal decided that Gimme a Break! had enough of a fanbase to release Season One on DVD, which will come out on February 14.

If you remember, this was before the show became "Joey-fied", so there are no cute moppets to be found in this season. It's just Nell Carter being the sassy maid to the gruff but lovable cop Carl Kaninsky, played by Dolph Sweet. It had the usual '80s sitcom conventions: a smart kid who was really pretty behind the huge granny glasses she wore, a dumb but slutty kid, and a little kid whose sole purpose was to spew wisecracks. It was definitely Nell who made the show with her dynamic presence.

Of course, as with most first seasons, fans will probably see a different show than they remembered, as the writers concentrated on the relationship between Nell and Carl; the kids came to the forefront later (especially after Joey Lawrence joined the cast in season 3).

Like I said, I didn't realize there was such a hue and cry for the show to come out on DVD, but there it is. Can The Facts of Life be far behind?
