The New York Observer has a good article today about the reaction to the apparent cancellation of Arrested Development. In it, writer Rebecca Dana examines, via critics' reactions and reactions from some of the cast and crew -- most notably from the reliably caustic David Cross -- why AD is so loved and why the cancellation by FOX hurts so much. My favorite reaction was from a British blogger who pithily typed the headline “Fox’s Arrested Development Cancelled: Retards More Influential Than Thought.”But the article also examines reasons why the show seemed so inaccessible to the general public, citing the oft-mentioned fact that the references to previous episodes are so ingrained in the comedy of the show, that it becomes impossible for any new viewers to follow. It makes sense. For every one-off joke like "Analrapist", there's a dozen others in each episode that are too referential to make sense to the casual viewer. Just explaining why Buster has a hook for a hand, an example the article uses, takes longer than most Presidential addresses. Maybe the viewers should just be happy that FOX allowed the show to go into a third season; fans of My So-Called Life and Freaks and Geeks would have killed for that many episodes.

Very true... another season of Freaks and Geeks would have made me VERY happy. I'm definitely grateful for all the seasons of AD that we got, but why cut season three in half?! It just doesn't make sense.

Yes we all love AD and are upset (to say the least) about the news, but the only thing we can really do is watch it/spread the word!!
All these letters, petitions, and whatnot are nice but as David Cross said "letters mean nothing to these corporations, only money does." So instead of wasting time with that just watch it, spread the word, and (I doubt anyone reading this hasn't yet anyway) BUY THE DVDs!!
So...DECEMBER 5th!! Mark it in your planners or etch it in the back of your skulls (those who already don't have it in there...)

someone else spotted it and brought it up in another post, but both AD season sets are right up near the top of Amazons best sellers list...not that will matter much.
Fox has hurt me for the last time. Im going to be torrenting the new season of 24 when it comes on...i will never watch Fox again.

I disagree that new viewers can't get into the show because of all the self-references. The first episodes I saw were halfway through the second season, and I only recently rented the first season. I didn't need to know everything to "get" the humor, especially since the narrator often helped explain things. I think that the problem is that it takes more than one episode to get hooked, and most people don't have the patience or attention span for that. As for this season, it would have been impossible for a new viewer to enjoy watching it, because the episodes were spaced so far apart. Even us fans could feel lost sometimes, since it would be weeks between each episode... Fox's terrible schedule for AD is the reason the ratings dropped considerably.

What a bunch of crap! Any new viewer to a show is going to have to watch an episode or two to start putting together the pieces. That's what made it so genius; that it had some depth and required a little comprehension of the characters, the end result being that you were enlighted by the greatest writing for a sitcom I have ever seen. I actually felt like I was part of it all, because I know what the inside-joke was referring too from having watched the previous episodes.
If anyone has watched Survivor, then you know you can fast forward through the first 7-8 minutes of the show because it's all back-filler followed by a commercial. That may work for an hour long show, but not in this scenario of course. I have tried to watch Yes Dear. I think I made it through one episode. The writing wasn't horrible, but wasn't great, and I still found myself wondering who was related/married to whom.
What I don't understand is why FOX didn't try moving the night or timeslot? They have done that with other shows?! It's still not too late to try.
Lastly, in regards to the authors comment "You also don’t need Arrested Development to be happy"... sounds a lot like "money can't buy happiness", but my thought is that if you have it, it sure can make you happy.

I really liked how, when recapping stuff for people who weren't familiar, AD usually showed a new presentation of the old info (rather than just showing a clip of the reference) so the viewers who knew the reference wouldn't get bored. Such brilliance. At least the careers of those actors will be great now, GOB is killin em, from what I understand...

I live in Australia and just heard the news about the cancellation of AD. Its sad to know we live in an age where a brilliant, hilarious, genious show like AD gets axed after only 2 and a half years while crap like all these stupid mindless reality shows go on for years and years. It is good to know that all of the fine actors of AD will have and have already had great careers unlike the people of reality who wont even be known tomorrow. thanks for the short but great time you gave all of us.

Just because my son works on the crew is not the reason I am commenting...my husband and I were so surprised to hear they were cancelling the show..after all the interruptions, with baseball and the like, you aired those 2 episodes that were some of the best yet..and then...I think it was extremely difficult to try and follow the show because of all the pre-emps. I as well feel that if it was to be shown in a good time/date slot it would be one of the funniest, and most intelligent and shows on the air..hope you reconsider.

I am so disheartened by this country's complete lack of brain function - AD is one of the best, wittiest and amazingly funny shows to appear amongst 5 years worth of mindless crap. Reality TV has to take a dive eventually; it's possible that AD premiered too soon for its own good. To let go of such an incredible show is a slap in the face to any remaining intelligence out here - do we REALLY need multiple wife-trading shows, home makeover shows, hire-and-fire shows, etc? Is there honestly ANYONE out there who enjoys this material AND has the ability to add one-plus-one successfully? Will TV ever appeal to those of us with some amount of intelligence again? Please, FOX, keep AD alive for those of us smart enough not to be dumbed-down by hours of your other crappy TV programming.
