Skitch Henderson dead

"When it's right, applause sounds like vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce."

I really like that quote. It's from "Skitch" Henderson, The Tonight Show bandleader who passed away yesterday at the age of 87. Skitch, born Lyle Russell Cedric Henderson in England, left behind quite a legacy. He lent his musical talent to such greats as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Bob Hope. It was Crosby who gave him the nickname "Skitch" based on his ability to quickly sketch out a score in several keys. He was with NBC in its early radio days, then made the move to television with the network, where he became the bandleader for the first incarnation of The Tonight Show with Steve Allen. He also formed the New York Pops in 1983.
