It seems to always happen like this: a spinoff of a highly-successful show comes out and every critic automatically praises it after one or two episodes. Then, after the show's been on for a few weeks, there come the inevitable reviews that start to reconsider the "accepted" premise that the show is genius. Think about it: it happened with AfterMASH. It happened with Joanie Loves Chachi. Heck, it even happened with Joey.Well, now it's happening with The Colbert Report. Recent reviews in both USA Today and New York magazine have given the show a thumbs-down, stating that the show's premise is unlikely to be sustainable over the long term. The New York review even goes so far as to say that -- gasp! -- The Showbiz Show with David Spade might actually be a better show. Now that's just being mean.

I've not read the article, however I can see where they could be right. The whole thing where he walks over to the guest basking in applause for himself could begin to get old quickly. Similarly the very fact it is just him with no-one else to provide on-screen material could end up spreading him too thin. Still good so far though.

I for one think it complements The Daily Show. My night wouldn't be complete without both.
Critics can kiss my ass for all I care. I watch what's funny, and Colbert is funny.

Maybe they'll take away his studio audience like they did to Adam Corolla after it was obvious he was bombing when no one would laugh ...

are you kidding me??? i'm a HUGE Daily Show fan and didn't have the highest of hopes for the Colbert Report... but now, when i go to my TiVo and see the Daily Show and The Colbert Report listed there... i watch Colbert first. i feel like i get smarter from watching TDS, but i laugh more at TCR. (and i still love that the "t" is silent.)

Every review of this show seems to say the same thing, "It's good now, but there's no way they can sustain it." So the show is criticized not for being bad, but because the reviewers can tell the show will be bad in the future. So I would like to applaud the critics for their amazing prescience.

I think the show is hilarious but yeah, it will take a while for Colbert to find a rhythm that's sustainable. Although the USA Today review completely misses the fact that Colbert was joking in the Greg Behrendt interview, the Jeff Daniels interview was definitely weird and uncomfortable.
There's no question that Colbert is a bit frenetic (he's got a lot to do), and the fact that he's always in character does create some weirdness in the interviews, but come on, it's WAY too early to make predictions. Let's let it soak for a few more weeks before prematurely reporting its demise.

I do agree that it is a little early to call the demise, but I just thinks some aspects of the premise are a little backassed, and it will be hard to change these aspects. I really don't think they should have made hime a "character" at all, while it creates some funny moments, it also creates a hell of a lot of uncomfortable ones since he is the host. There is a reason that Jon Stewart plays the straightman to helms or the other guy (that is bad!!, I really like him too). He plays the straightman, because that is appropriate, as the host. While Colbert's character is funny, you can really see it stretching at the seams in the interviews. He has to balance the live nature of the interview, the higher-profile guests than who he got to "interview" in his segments on TDS, and it is making for a lot of strained moments. He recovers relatively quickly, but I just don't know how much longer it can last.

I had high hopes for it but I'm dissapointed. It's basically a great 5 mins act stretched to 30. It worked on the Daily Show because it was a special treat, a contrast to Stewart.
It's already old. Too bad.
