Comedian Dane Cook's most recent album, Retaliation, has been selling like crazy, and I'm trying to figure out why. The man isn't unfunny, but "debut at number four on the Billboard charts" and "outsell Steve Martin's Wild and Crazy Guy" funny? Sorry, he ain't that funny. I've been watching this man for a few years now, and I don't think I've ever seen anyone more obsessed with his body and his looks, both of which he uses to attract attention on stage rather than actually writing good jokes. His humor is of the "did you ever notice?" variety, which grew tired over twenty years ago. He also tends to end his sets by taking off his shirt. This is always as part of a joke, of course, but I imagine him staying up the night before agonizing how he's going to be able to work a gag in that will allow him to show off his body. He's a handsome guy, which is why, if you listen closely to his TV appearances, the noise coming from the audience is about fifty percent laughter and fifty percent screaming females. He's like that striking guy at a party who the ladies will laugh at no matter what he says (or the hot chick at a party who the guys pay attention to no matter how boring, let's not be sexist here). He is likable, I'll give him that, and maybe he has within him some true comedic talent, but right now he's pushing his looks to the forefront, and while it's a nice treat for the ladies, his comedy suffers greatly for it.

Dane is the funniest guy out there! This is the first person I've seen hating on him. Dane's the shiznit and is doing great in his career. I think it's great that he has looks too cause most comedians are repulsive....He's no Brad pitt so I don't really understand the whole hating on his looks thing. He's soo not conceided. Love Dane, keep on making us smile! :)

You know, I don't think he is that funny here. My husband just loves his comedy and while, like you said, it isn't unfunny, it isn't "dying-of-laughter" stuff either. I would agree with you.

Hey, to each their own. I think he's pretty funny. I listened to the Retaliation album on a flight from China to the US and I (quietly) laughed my head off. I think the appeal is in his charisma, which comes off whether you see him or not.

Dane is one of the funniest comedians out there. I've never even noticed him using anything but humor and a lot of times self-depricating humor, to get laughs.
If you're noticing his looks, then maybe you just think he's hot...

Yeah, I think he's great as well. Like Kel said, his allure is half-comedy, half-charisma. He's engaging and lively and generally fun to listen to. He's not as insightful as someone like David Cross, but so what? Listening to Dane's sets are like hanging out with an old friend. You dont expect to have your socks knocked off, but you know it'll be a comfortably enjoyable time.

You just wish you had a CT2000.
And as for comedians go, it is not like we have alot of options here. We have Kathy Griffin, Carrot Top (are they the same people), Chris Rock, etc. Yes, there are more, but for some reason I find it difficult to like the same comedians my parents do. Comedy must progress, and they don't find him funny, therefore, I must like him and not Jerry Seinfeld.
Oh, and by the way, I got in a fight with my girlfriend in the grocery store last night and I was just waiting for Dane to pop his head in.

I saw him last night on Adam Carolla for the first time and I had never heard of him either. He seemed pretty funny. He didn't take off his shirt though. He was wearing head-to-toe athletic wear, including a hat. It looks sorta silly.

Dane is a pretty funny comedian (though i will aggree there are funnier comedians working today) but i think a lot of the populartiy comes from his HUGE, rabid online fanbase; the MySpace crowd did quite a bit to boost the sales of his new album.
again, funny, but he's no Lewis Black, Mitch Hedberg, David Cross, Dave Attell, Dave Chappelle...i could go on and on : )
BTW...i found this site a week ago and i love it!

I love Dane Cook. Reading his material isn't that funny because it's not necessarily clever or original most of the time. BUT his delivery is exceptional. Watching/listening to him leaves me in stitches. But, reading his stuff rarely makes me laugh (or even smile) unless I've seen it before.
Like the Car Alarm song... If you read it, you probably wouldn't laugh. If you saw him do it, you'd probably start laughing at every car alarm you'd hear from then on.

I think he is HUGELY overrated. There are so many better comedians out there. Like, I just watched a Jimmy Carr performance, and it's so much better than anything this guy ever did. The same goes for Mitch Hedberg, Lewis Black etc. etc.

Dane Cooks popularity has the same scientifically proven explanation as Sawyers on "Lost": Fat chicks.
