Too bad the option of "The producers don't even know what's going on" isn't up there.
Honestly. There better be some damn good reasons why the hell Desmond was in the hatch. And about how this whole Hanso project incorporates into the story.
Or there are going to be a lot of angry people.

I just hope they stumble on remains that include a sequined dress, a steamer trunk and bamboo huts.
A Gilligan reference would be perfect, doncha think?

Um, the producers have no clue, of course. I mean, not a single clue. Do you honestly think they knew what was in the hatch when they first revealed the hatch?
Get over it people, we are never getting answers. Just more questions.
What the hell possessed me to watch another show from the Alias guy is beyond me.
Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice...
He has no answers!

They already explained why Desmond was in the hatch.
Desmond + Around the world race + boat accident + crazy scientist = Desmond in the hatch.
Did you not watch the last episode? Desmond was in the hatch when the boat he was in got marooned on the island while he was on the around the world race he had told Jack about when they first met. A person from the hatch found him and brought him into the hatch and thus began Desmond's turn at punching in the numbers in the computer.
That is why he is in the hatch...

The whole thing is being played out in the the unconscious mind of Jack's wife. Characters are parts of her own psyche or representations of people in her life. In the season 3 finale, she'll wake up, season 4 will explain all the significance.

I agree that even the producers might not have an idea what the endgame is. Keep in mind that "Lost" was origianlly intended to a short-lived season. The original concept was the the series to run 1/2 season and conclude - it wasn't originally meant to be an on-going series. I'm sure whatever the original resolution to the storyline was, it has long-since been reworked.

So, I agree and disagree with all of you, Yes the writers and producers have absolutely no clue and they have some clue, this show is too detailed too intricate for them to now know what they're doing. I personally would be very upset if it turned into some dooms day device scientific research facility even though it does look like its going to go that route I personally believe that, that is a plant, I think the producers want us to go there because we as human beings need the rational explanation and I know that they are too smart and to freakin' manipulative to have it be that easy. So those are my two cents. I honestly have no idea where or why the show is going and I am perfectly fine with that because the show is called Lost and we are supposed to be Lost as long as we are watching the show.

Personally, I enjoy the show most when I stop thinking about "what's really going on" and just have fun with it. Not knowing what's inside the hatch is always better than knowing what's inside the hatch. Sure enough, I was disappointed when I found out; I'm sure *anything* would have been a letdown. The questions, the mysteries, the neat little twists... they're what make Lost fun. I'm going to enjoy the fun for as long as it lasts. (Probably two seasons, by my estimate, which is how long Alias was fun until it got over-the-top silly.)

Carl-
It's more about why the hell did he have to keep entering the same number sequence. I know we'll get an answer about that someday, but it's frustrating to see it become something even bigger and weird now.
And there also has to be a reason why it was Desmond that ended up in the hatch.

I'm thinking maybe that aliens are experimenting on us. Or a past experiment threatened to ruin the earth, or humans, and they've been trying to figure out a way to stop it while making their people reset the code.

Here's a theory: the whole thing is a social experiment set up by the Hanso folks. Put people under extreme stress, get them to be afraid of something they don't understand, and see what happens. Will leaders arise? Will they kill each other? Will they believe the unbelievable? How long will the suckers keep pushing the button out of fear of the unknown? Maybe they even abandoned the project, but no one bothered to tell the rats (people on the island).

If they abandoned the project, then why keep the power flowing to the hatch? Remember the power line from the ocean? Why not just turn off the power and let it go? Why keep the power on?
Just my .02.

What happens when they stop typing the number? The Hanzo peps think the project leader (whoever that was)is dead and they come and clean up.??? Sounds good. maybe... I could be wrong. One day before the show is cancelled they will tell us.
my .03 cents blah!

Maybe the "endgame" is exactly that. It's an adventure game. Walt is at home playing this on his shiny new XBOX. O.k., I'm ready for a star now. :o)

The magnetic pull is the key. A strongth enough magnetic pull could, with insulation on all sides except the top,in fact be directed skyward and possibly pull anything metallic towards it's base.
Let's not dismiss the other dead people and aircraft remnents that were found near the waterfall. We humans all are affected by polar magnetics. I would speculate that the writers are using the Hanso angle to push some sci-fi, b-movie plotline to ask the "what if" of magnetics, time, physiology altering experimentation and then set back and wait for the end to materialize from viewers. Don't be surprised if Ryan Seacrest suddenly comes on and goads us all to give the writers their ending and it'll be a bargain at $.95 a call.

The numbers .....
42 = the number of people on one side of the island
23 = the number of people from the tail section ....I thought you said there were 23 of you? when they went into the bunker.
What are the other numbers?? I wonder....

It could also be some sort of spacial anomaly. But of course, they'd better have a good ending in mind... Still a fan-freakin-tastic show.

Ok, here's some more wild theories:
It's a portal to another world/dimension (common scifi/horror theme).
It's a geothermal generator to power scalar technology for causing earthquakes and weather control.
