As we were promised, we find out what happened to the crew out at sea in this episode. Not only that, but we see what Locke and Kate experienced down in the hatch before Jack decided to go "do something heroic," as Charlie put it. And as it so happens, it seems I was wrong to assume that the symbol on the cabinet of vials didn't mean a whole lot.
Yes, you did see the symbol on a shark. A shark!
What's next, fricken laserbeams on their heads? My brother in law had
to call me to rewind my Tivo to double-check what he thought he saw,
and there it was. Oh God, what a wrench this throws in Lost theorists', um, theories. We also get a tour of more of Desmond's lair. Kate finds out she was thrown into a pantry full of goodies, and yet again we see that symbol on just about everything in there. Someone must really want some good Feng Shui going on down there. We also get a look at another one of Desmond's works of art - a wall covered in chicken scratches. How long before someone out there freeze frames the episode and counts them all? Well, it looked like a lot more than 108 to me.
So,
anyone know the answer to Desmond's riddle? In case you missed it,
closed-captioning said, "What did the snowman say to the other
snowman?" Do you smell carrots? Obviously it's some prearranged code,
set up for him to identify this person he's waiting for. Is he waiting
for the now dead Ethan to be the one to come relieve him of his duties,
plugging in the now famous numbers into an old Apple ][ computer (with
5.25" floppy drive!)Now the raft crew is back on the island again, and "the others" are all over them. Maybe Walt did get away for Shannon to see him in the jungle? Actually, if they were showing things as they were happening at sea and on the island, synced up, Walt would've appeared almost right after he was abducted. Now that's odd.
Though it was a Michael-centered episode, really there wasn't a whole lot of revealing backstory. Maybe they're saving his best stuff for last. Oh boy, wait until Hurley finds out what's being typed on that keyboard!

Desmond is a doctor. Perhaps he is monioring an illness plaguing the others. Is the island akin to a leper colony?

The really creepy thing is that Hurley told that joke last season. He might be "the one".

Am I the only one who felt that they were kind of treading water with this episode? They showed a lot events we already saw last week, the backstory wasn't very revealing as you said, and the only really interesting part came in the last 30 seconds. I was disappointed, and I love this show.
Thanks for pointing out the thing with the shark! I never would have caught that.

two things...
1... nobody mentioned this from last week's episode (at least that i saw), but while everything in the hatch-layer was old school (record player, computers, etc...), the washer/dryer that he was washing his clothes in was brand new (or at least from within the past two or three years).
2. the description for episode 4 says ... "Disturbing memories from Hurley’s past cause him to struggle with a task he’s assigned inside the hatch." so, it could be that Hurley is forced to type the numbers into the computer in the future.

I noticed the washer/dryer, looked like a Neptune or something, but it definietly stood out in that opening sequence.
Even taking Jack's awesome hair into account, how long ago could he possibly have met Desmond? I think he's only been down there a few years, not that it's really important.
I thought it was a great episode, I'll take a rehash timewise with new information over forward time progression and nothing happening anytime.
Plus, the Others with those sweet clubs...

Remember the guy that Hurley knew from the asylum? I bet he was the one that was supposed to take over from Desmond, and didn't want to forget the password that (now, here is my really big speculation) resets the timer for the nuclear device that is set to sterilize the planet!!! That's why Desmond wanted John to type the numbers in so badly as the timer was ticking down. It's there because people on the outside of the hatch are infected, and Desmond is the only person left. If he gets sick and dies, then he can't enter the password and the bomb goes off, eliminating the virus/agent that is making people sick!
Of course, this is all wild speculation.

Theories aside .. I thought this was a step backward episode. For the first time, Lost felt like a time filler.
Who cares - that much - about Michael's back story? We get it - he loves his son. We already knew this before but we still got about 5 different flashback segments. Just a waste of time in my opionion.
The "Tarentino" hatch was also disappointing. I did like the effect of going back and viewing it from Locke's POV, but they progressed to exactly nowhere.
The preview for next week, all 20 secs of it was better than this whole show.

Last night I decided to set up a Wiki to track what we (collectively) now know about Lost. It's running a fresh install of MediaWiki (which is what the great Wikipedia runs on), so anyone can add and edit information. Any red links you see are pages that still need to be created, and clicking them takes you right to the edit screen for that page.
Since I set it up last night, it's not quite ready for primetime (that is, there is nothing there yet), but anyone who wants to participate, please go on over and add stuff in.
The wiki can be found here: http://www.tonyscida.com/lost/

Michael gave Walt a toy (Polar?) Bear. That combined with the comic and Polar Bear on the island makes me wonder how much Walt is in control of. Is he 'him'?
odd.

Beth, the episode was literally "adrift" just like the title.
I think the scattershot nature was intentional, but I'm an optimist.
As for the symbol, I have a breakdown of what the Dharmic/I-Ching/Ba Gua symbol means in relation to the numbers.

Did anyone else notice in s02e01 that when they showed Walt reading the comic that the cover had been digitally altered so that you can no longer see it? What's up with that?

To TAD:
I read online yesterday that they people were thinking that they only got permission to air the cover once originally and couldn't again past that. Would make some sense, but sucks.

it was probably altered due to licensing. in s01 it's a flash comic. i'm going to go out on a limb and say they probably didn't get DC's approval for that one.

But didn't the comic have a giant polar bear in it? Or was the polar bear on the cover itself? Seems like I remember something like that, and that's kind of important what with Walt and all the polar bears...

i thought it was a great character episode for michael, sort of harold perrineaus walkabout...
i think walt is the only one that can harness the power of the numbers and the magnet that run the islands infinite improbability drive...

It was a FLASH comic book, produced by DC Comics. DC is owned by Warner Bros., for what it's worth. Which studio makes LOST? It isn't WB, is it?
The Flash shows up just fine in all his glory (and Green Lantern's, as I recall) in the DVD set.
