Canadians are always getting picked on. Americans make fun of their funny accents, their funny mounted police, and the funny way they put mayonnaise on everything. Canadians always get picked on. So I'm not gonna pick on them now. I'm gonna let them pick on themselves. Canadians don't like Canadian TV. So say the ratings, released today by Canada's Bureau of Broadcast Measurement. (Broodcast Measoorment, eh? Sorry. No teasing. I forgot.) In fact, out of the top 20 shows in Canada, 19 of them are American series including CSI, Desperate Housewives and Survivor. The only Canadian show in the top 20 is some show called Corner Gas, a sitcom set in a rural, farm-like setting. Once again, I'm tempted to tease the Canadians here, but let's not forget that they gave us some funny men (Mike Meyers, Jim Carrey), a great pair of boobs (Pamela Anderson), a great cartoon (Terrence and Philip...oh wait, that's us making fun of them again), and some rock n' rollers/out of controllers (Steppenwolf). That's right, I said Steppenwolf. I love 'em! Canadians to Canadian TV: You suck!

We actually love Canadian TV - when it is well written, and well produced. The fact of the matter is that American TV and its advertisments have made their way up to the Grand North and like our Southern Cousings we can't help but give in to the advertisments. Canadian broadcaster find it too costly to produce a new show, and have it go up against the marketing machine behind such all of your "hit shows" - its way too convenient to just pay the fees and fill in the adspace with simulcasted shows from the states (simulcast - even on the nbc/cbs/fox/etc, if it is on on of the Canadian networks you cant hide from the Canadian ads - sucks come Superbowl time).

yeah, it's not that canadian tv sucks, it's just that there is no canadian tv. Corner Gas is a great show, and so is Trailer Park Boys

I know this is gonna sound naieve, but how does TV work up there? My friend said that ya'll get all of the US TV networks CBS, NBC, FOX, etc from Detroit and Buffalo but ya'll still have "CTV" that has the same shows? Weird.

There are a few "broadcast networks" ala USA, there is the CBC which is Government owned(sorta) and shows only Canadian shows and sporting events(though American movies and documentaries do show up), then there is CTV which has its own Canadian "produced" (ie Corner Gas, "Canadian Idol") shows, but has alot of American shows (Lost, Desperate Housewives, Law and Order) then there is Global which is a relative newcomer and shows mainly US shows, (alot of fox shows, Survivor, Joey, Apprentice). Now these 2 (CTV, Global) basically bid for the rights to show the American shows up here, and with those rights, get to simulcast their own commercials over your fancy American commercials. We also have a lot of cable channels, that are either Canadian partnerships of US channels (Food Network, Discovery, TLC, HGTV) - or very copied versions (History Channel, Star). The CRTC regulates Canadian television, and mandates that a certain percentage must contain Canadian content.

Count me in with the Canadians who don't like Canadian TV much. There are a handful of shows I have loved (Kids in the Hall primary among them; also Trailer Park Boys) but for the most part, the production values always seem really low, especially when it comes to sound-- there always seems to be some sort of echo.

Yah, they seem to cramp "our" style - oh wait - they want us to keep "our" style. Without the CRTC there would be little to no Canadian Content on TV save for "specialty channels" and the CBC. There would be less and less Canadian bands getting airplay on the radio, and even fewer Canadian actors getting work with Canadian acting gigs. Are you Canadian? I am.
