Those looking for clues about the "endame" on Lost no doubt caught a peek at the strange symbol on the cabinet within the hatch lair (pictured right). Some think it's a hidden code, one that decrypts into some sort of answer to what's going on down there. With its unpatterned dashes around its perimeter, maybe it's morse code? No, actually, it's not as mysterious as you may think. In case you missed where the symbol above came from, it's on the front door of the cabinet of vials that Desmond opens:

I
t's tough to catch the first time around, as he opens it so quickly. After a little research, I found that the symbol is actually nothing more than the "Ba Gua Octagon". The Ba Gua is used in Feng Shui as a way of subduing negative energy and enhancing positive energy within an area, usually a living space or office. The symbol is always aligned with the wall containing the front door or main entrance to any living/working space. So, what does this mean when it's placed on the cabinet of strange vials? I have no idea. Perhaps we'll see the trigrams placed in other areas around the hatch lair or the island, and they'll give us some answers.Meanwhile, here's a shot of the vials within the cabinet for those who missed it. The prescription number(?) should look very familiar.

Oh well, I'll throw this morse code sheet in the bin then. But it looks like the logo in the middle has an image of a swan in the middle rather than the yin yang. I don't think it says Ba Gua across the middle either - it looks like a six letter word which will probably turn out to be another network.com website with more obscure mis-clues.
Personally, I think the writers are walking a fine line here between plot teasers and counter-intelligence. At the moment it's enough to pique my interest, but I can see myself getting so caught up in every little detail that it just becomes too much effort to watch. I hope they don't drag it out forever like the X-Files but I'm pleased it hasn't been a flash in the pan like The 4400.
One thing that does impress me is that with the level of scrutiny people are starting to apply to every frame of every episode; the writers haven't slipped up yet with a single plot inconsistency, cool.
Looking forward to finding out what happened to the rafters next on Lost...

The six letter word is DHARMA, with the R reversed.

And "Dharma" means "the way of the higher Truths", which makes you think it really is supposed to be a clue: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dharma

The thought that crossed my mind (other than the deeper meaning - which is probably entwined) is that its also the "symbol" for the " project" - it is also on his jumpsuit. I think there may be 8 "hatches" all connecting to the 1 main area of the bunker... this may explain all the movable mirrors. Again, just surmising.

The drug smugglers' aircraft and the "Black Rock" slave ship are both from Africa right? Well, if you put the numbers in as Lat/Long co-ordinates in Google Earth http://earth.google.com/ You will find it is a place deep in the middle of the African Congo. Any volunteers to take a GPS and find out what's actually there? Maybe there's some kind of hatch buried in the ground...

OH yeah, I take back what I was saying about plot inconsistencies - At the start of the Season two pilot the lid of the record player is up in one shot and down in the next, not to mention the fact that it's all the wrong way round after the explosion...

And how exactly do /minor/ errors of continuity relate to plot inconsistencies?

It's a slippery slope isn't it. Sooner or later all attention to detail goes out the window and none of it makes any sense any more.

If they are Gay Midget Wizards it would explain the Mama Cass song; my fiancee thinks it's a gay anthem!

The logo can also be found on both the keyboard and monitor of the computer.
The image is that of a company logo. It is the company that built the bunker and the equipment for the monitoring/control of the island.

For Bob:
"Well, if you put the numbers in as Lat/Long co-ordinates in Google Earth http://earth.google.com/ You will find it is a place deep in the middle of the African Congo..."
And if you put them in as 4.815/162.342 you wind up in the pacific ocean about a thousand miles from the coast of Australia near Micronesia.

The symbol looks a lot like a rumored secret project symbol, the Montauk Project. From the little bit I've read, it sounds like they experimented with magnetism to try and stimulate the brain. One side effect was insanity.

Gonna call Shenanigans on that Montauk Project reference - might have some credence if the logo appeared on the net before yesterday.

Dont rule it out because of that. Perhaps it is like the Halo 2 I <3 Bees thing. RL information that clues into the game/show. Maybe it was added to the web yesterday as a clue?
