Surface: Episode 2

SurfaceRegardless of what a lot of critics are saying, this remains the best of all the Superfacisonold shows (my word for Supernatural, Surface, Threshold, and Invasion). The way the characters are coming together seems the most natural, and the mystery is the most intriguing. Unlike Threshold and Invasion, we're still not sure what exactly these monsters are, where they came from, or what's going on. Even if tonight we got to actually see a couple of the monsters! The big one was cool (surfacing off the coast of South Africa near a lighthouse), though the little one getting loose at the pool party was a little too Gremlins for me.

Let's face it: these two kids are much too smart to bring in some weird animal into the home and secretly feed it and raise it. These are the type of kids that would watch sci-fi movies and play video games, so they'd know that you shouldn't do that.

Meanwhile, they've caught one of the monsters and are examining it. For some reason they decide to laser into its body, which...well, you can guess what happens. Explosion, blood, scientist hit in the face and hospitalized. A face mangled forever...or is it?

I like how Rich and Laura meet up. It seems really natural the way it happens, not forced. The actors are believable in the roles, maybe because they're not overplaying it and they're not incredibly well known faces. They seem real, and you believe that these things are happening to them (well, as much as you can believe of TV show about mysterious monsters coming up from the oceans around the world).

Surface is neatly balancing the big picture (people being attacked around the world, the military and scientists investigating) with the more personal stories (Rich trying to find out what happened to his brother). It has the best story so far, it's the most entertaining, and it even has the best special effects (neat shot of the monster eating the boat at the end, eh?). I have a feeling that Invasion might be the show that will survive, because schedule-wise it follows Lost, But Surface is the one that deserves to see a full season.
