First things first. I caused a minor kerfuffle when, in my last column, I wrote "If there exist a metaphysical bridge between 'gay' and 'southern' it is Clay Aiken." This was erroneously construed as a slam against The Clay and caused a few folks to venture a guess as to what the hell I meant by that. The statement was not an insult. It was the result of months of exhaustive research that took me on a journey not only to the outer reaches of the cosmos, but into the depths of my very soul.
When I see Clay Aiken I see a man who sometimes carries himself in a manner that screams "gay." However, there are times when those same traits seem not "gay" at all, but rather the mannerisms of a simple southern gentlemen. It is these two facets, both in conflict with one another, but also feeding off one another, that have led me to believe that Clay is not actually human, but rather a pan-dimensional entity who was brought into existence, either by a Higher Power or his Own Will, to serve as a bridge between these two concepts. I have created a visual aid to help explain what I believe to be Clay's place in the Grand Scheme:

His enigmatic role in the universe confounds even me, but as a terrestrial being I cannot question it.
Okay, now that we've cleared that up it's time to stick the leftovers back in the fridge and cram a whole new load of delicious infotainment down our gullets. Grab your spoons, kids:
E! News Weekend can't seem to stay away from Reese Witherspoon. About every ten seconds they came back to her to discuss Just Like Heaven, or to talk about Walk the Line, the movie where she plays June Carter to Joaquin Phoenix's Johnny Cash. During encounter number 543 with the actress we were told that there is already "Oscar buzz" surrounding her performance in the Cash biopic, buzz that seemed to be caused solely by the staff at E! News Weekend. This frightens me, because it means that E! News has the ability to not only report what's happening, but can also bend time and space to make it happen. This was proven later when a correspondent actually caused a polar bear to materialize out of thin air:
Correspondent: We're here at the opening of Just Like Heaven with Reese Witherspoon. Now Reese, why did you bring a polar bear as your date?
Reese: What are you talking about? I didn't bring a po-- OH MY GOD!!!
Later, Lost actor Dominic Monoghan said that when celebrities make their love lives public and celebrate them on TV, it "feels tacky." Apparently Monoghan has never felt the pleasure of courting a young female and luring her into his freaky sub-religion like some demented caveman. How dare you question the ways of love, Mr. Monoghan.
We then cut to Star Jones, who is hosting E!'s coverage of the Emmys today. Jones claimed that Will and Grace's Debra Messing "is the funniest woman since Lucille [Ball]." She then said that "Hellmann's Real Mayonnaise was the greatest beverage since Cognac."
Next we got an insider's look at a celebrity health spa, where apparently one of the qualifications to work there is to say the word "Evian" six hundred times. I haven't seen or heard such blatant product placement since McDonald's and Coca-Cola financed the movie Mac and Me. Eventually neither the employee nor the E! correspondent could stop saying "Evian" so the interview was cut short so both could have their brain chips replaced.
In all seriousness, product placement can be very lucrative, which is why this edition of "Extra Hollywood Access" is brought to you by the men and women of Undersocks. "Undersocks: It's underwear for your feet! (TM)"
Catch you next time...

You were right the first time, Clay presents as gay to 99% of the population whether he is or isn't.
As far as a southern gentlemen, that's laughable, you have a LOT to learn. Just ask.
Move Clay a little closer to gay and and little closer to hell and your diagram would be more accurate.

I forgot to add that the Claymates will soon arrive to accuse anyone posting negative comments about Clay as being Clayhaters, Kelly fans, ex-fans scorned, jealous and on and on it goes, that's the best they can come up with. They miss the point entirely that everything ugly thing Clay is accused of being can be proven true, that's lost somewhere in their rage. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that they accused you of some crazy stuff that has no basis in reality. Reality is of no importance to Claymates, only perception.
If Clay were a celebrity of note his misdeeds would be in the news and he wouldn't get away with his awww shucks act, and it IS an act.

LOL - OK I admit that I was irritated with your last column, but I just figured one more junior high reference by a guy who mistakes geeky mannerisms for gay mannerisms. Nothing new - ignore him - and notched my respect for your journalism down a notch.
But I have to say that this article made me laugh - even if you STILL don't get it.

the clay aiken fans (or "claymates" as sometimes they're called...*shiver*) who commented on the last post scare me. really. i mean, having an unhealthy obsession with an effeminate male pop star who is probably 25 years younger than you isn't really all that cool.

You should check out Clay's talent, his charity work with his foundation, Ambassador for UNICEF, the good he does as well as his fans and the good they do and the time and money they also give to charity. They are ALL ages, and appreciate a real talent, and not a screamer or person high on drugs or booze. You need to know what you are talking about, before you put down people. Makes me think you are jealous, or scarier yet you don't appreciate the best performer and all around person to come along in decades. With all the gay performers around, why do you care, and what would make the difference?

I thought your article was pretty funny--and enlightening to some extent. I also think you are right in that sometimes, geeky or gentlemanly gets misconstrued as gay. Just because not all guys act "macho" all the time, doesn't mean they aren't a "man" in every sense of the word.
And Bethany, you have some serious issues girl. I get so tired of seeing people make all these stupid claims about celebrities, and how "bad" they are---how "evil" they are etc. You people are the ones who are nuts. He is a guy---a normal person who just happens to sing and have a higher profile than the average person. He is not bad, or evil, and if you have "proof" of all the horrors of Clay--then bring them on. You won't because we both know they don't exist. Yeah, he sticks his foot in his mouth sometimes---who doesn't? We just don't get quoted or shown on tape when we do. Yeah, he might have a bad mood occasionally. See above explanation. Yeah, he may get angry once in a while. See above explanation. So what is your point? Where has he hit someone?? or stolen something?? or raped someone?? or killed someone?? or cusses someone out?? or made outlandish demands at venues?? or made outlandish demands of his fans or employees?? Where is your attitude coming from?? And it is a know fact that a ton of the biggest Clay haters on the internet are "in fact" fans of other idols who hate Clay for being so prominent on TV and in articles when --- afterall--- he didn't even win. Get over it. He has every right to a career the same as any other singer--whether ever on AI or not.

I'll have to start out with saying that I'm the biggest fag hag you can know. My gaydar is quite tuned and I KNOW gay when I see it. At first perception, I had my doubts about Clay's heterosexuality claims. The accent is what first got me. Then, as I started hearing accents from people in Raleigh, I was like "Well, maybe it is more of a specific southern accent." Then, I still had my doubts because of how he is. I was like "Yeah I don't know about this whole Southern gentleman thing. No guys are that way." Well then I started thinking about why he is that way. If you know anything about his childhood, then, as an pyshcology expert or not, you know why. Clay has many gay male fans and they don't think he's a closet case. They've read his book, which obviously none of y'all have.
Even if he were gay, who gives a crap? How does that discredit him as a talented artist? What gives you (referring to not the columnist) the right, to be presistant on somebody's personal life? How pathetic is it to come to a site to bash someone? Go do something that is actually worth your time. Go hate on the Kelly haters, because they are just as pathetic as you are.
I love Kelly. She's freakin' awesome! I saw in her in concert this year. But even if I didn't like her. I wouldn't go to her site to bash her. Let alone an entertainment news site. That's so stupid. My time is actually worth a lot more than that. But to defend Clay is.
And I still don't get why there is so much friction between Clay and Kelly fans. They are actually really good friends and aren't trying to compete against one another. They both are proud of each other's accomplishments. So why waste your breathe as a Clay fan or a Kelly fan, trying to discredit the other to make your "Idol" the better one?
Clay and Kelly fans alike who do this, get a freakin' life!
Claymate in Oklahoma.

Hey Adam,
I took offense at your first comment re: Clay being gay or a southern gentleman but just deleted it and went on my way remembering to not read your posts anymore. However, today in reading your attempt to clean up your first comment and also reading some of the stupid comments by the people who dislike Clay, I feel compelled to defend Clay--a decent human being who never hurt anyone. His only problem is that he is TOO TALENTED and the old high-school jealousy thing is truly getting old. If you like Clay as I and millions of other fans do, watch him, buy his book, his CDs, etc. If you don't like Clay, just leave him alone!! I'm sure he's not contacting you or writing anything about you anywhere so why are some people so threatened by him? Let's go back to the high school/grade school jealousy of the person who is popular or talented and the one who is not. The one who is not popular is jealous and therefore, must try to bring the other person down to their own level in order to validate themselves (make themselves feel better) so I actually feel sorry for people who have so much hate in their hearts and can only hope that they will someday grow up and do something CONSTRUCTIVE instead of DESTRUCTIVE with their lives. I'm sure there are still a lot of people suffering from the effects of Hurricane Katrina, why don't you do something to help them? And yes, I do work in the mental health field. I am a Clay fan NOW AND FOREVER!!!

Well, I didn't take your Clay comments too bad the first time. I didn't take it as a compliment, but hey, that's ok. This second comment is ok too, even though you don't "get clay". You don't have to....nobody has to. I just wish people would drop any discussion of any celebs being gay....almost all of them are accused of it at one time or another. If they are, they are. If they are and don't want to say it publicly, so what??? There are plenty of other stupid things to talk about than that.
And Clay Aiken isn't gay. He IS an original. That's one reason so many like him. Rude comments will not change the minds of the fans of Clay who do "get it."

I have to agree with the poster that said if you look at Clay's childhood and adolescence, psychologically, it really does make sense for him to be exactly the way he is. He was basically raised by women and surrounded by women growing up, and these were some very southern old-fashioned women, no less. So he is polite, compassionate, NOT macho, and trying to be a good role model by giving back. Why does that make him gay? So he wants to wait until marriage for sex... my husband did the same, for his Faith, no other reason. The Clay Aiken that the general public sees on television appearances is not the real Clay Aiken. He is timid and nervous, and holds back. He is not yet comfortable being a "celebrity" and feels like an outsider. When Clay is surrounded by his fans, on stage in concert, for example, that's when he is himself. He knows all those people in the audience bought tickets to see him, they like him, and he feels not only accepted but loved. This is when his confidence, great sense of humor, and "manliness" truly show up. If I only knew the Clay I see on t.v. and not performer Clay or huminatiarian Clay, nor all the backstory about his childhood that I learned about in his book, I'm sure I would see him in a different light. But knowing all I know, I can't possibly see him in any other way than "the man of my dreams." Laugh all you want... it's true. And this is coming from a 25 yr. old Gen X girl who's other all time favorite artist is the Dave Matthews Band. And, wanna know my favorite female singer... Kelly Clarkson. ;)

You are fricking amazing! With all that is going on in this world and all the self absorbed celebrities there are you choose to write stupid editorials on Clay Aiken. What has he ever done to deserve your wrath?! He has a southern accent, is a total gentleman (obviously something you don't know about) a christian ( ah, there may lie the problem......you are not and do not know what constitutes a good christian) and has the most glorious voice ever. Would I want him as my husband or son-in-law or my best friend?! You bethcha!! You need to reevaluate your own life adn then maybe you will see what Clays fans know. God Bless him and thank God we have him in this crazy world as this time. His voice and his morals and standard for being a man is sorely needed. Take notes!!!!
