A lot of people are beginning to say that the whole "Geraldo rescues woman" story wasn't what it seems. One of them is Alessandra Stanley at The New York Times. She reports that Rivera "nudged" an Air Force worker out of the way so he could be shown on camera helping a woman in a wheelchair. But Rivera went on The O'Reilly Factor and showed videotape that proved that's not what happened. The NYT has not issued a retraction, and Rivera might sue.
Meanwhile, Stephen Elliott over at Salon says that Rivera made the rescued woman walk from the FOX news van to the heliport twice, so they could get the better shot for the camera. This hasn't been confirmed either.
What do you think? Are people being unfair to Geraldo in this situation?

People are always so hard on Geraldo. Atleast he's there doing something.. anything. Personally I miss his old msnbc show when he was the only one not afraid to rock the boat on topics..

I'm no Geraldo fan, but I hope these reporters can back up their stories or things aren't going to look so good for them. The times is still reeling from the phony stories a reporter fabricated only a couple of years ago.

Just another example of the trash being spewed by the lying, liberal rag that the New York Times has become.

Geraldo is a clown. He's holding little kids in front of the camera and proclaiming himself the rescuer of last resort. If the cameras were not rolling, he'd be eating a pizza in his airconditioned news van. Someone please tell Geraldo that he has no credibility and quit trying to corrupt Shepard Smith by bringing him over to the dark side. Face it, it takes time to evacuate 150,000 people. And lack of leadership at the local level only makes it look worse for everyone else.

My guess is that the NYtimes has their ducks in order on this one. Setting up that "rescue" required that Geraldo get up there in the top position to bring her down. You know that the Air Force worker had to have been at the top of the stairs to get things started and organized. Notice that as they came down the stairs the Air Force guy was at the bottom, out of the picture, but came up to check on something.
If you have every been around one of these "news" photo shoots, they go to quite a bit of trouble to create "candid" shots. Geraldo would not have been necessary or even asked to carry that wheelchair down the stairs... he would have had to ask if he could and, most likely, insisted. My guess is that there will be no law suit from Geraldo. The last thing he wants is depositions from everyone else who was there telling how he not only "nudged" but elbowed, shoved and pushed his way into being the guy on top bringing that chair down... my money is on the Nytimes on this one.

Why can't we ask the camera man? Or better yet, the woman.

Let's face it, Geraldo is the south end of a northbound horse, and his credibility is less than zero. That said, the NYT's credibility is about at the same level. So, if they want to waste the time of the courts and hash it out there, so be it. Then that nitwit Greta can cover it endlessly and offer us all the inside information and details that we NEVER wanted to know in the first place.
Hard to believe that I'm actually a FOX fan, but those two are hopeless and useless.

Geraldo exudes the vibe that the story is always about him and I believe that is usually the case.
However, while I don't like him and don't think he acts like a journalist, every situation should be examined on a case by case basis. I will never assume I know what went on behind the camera, when it was off or what may have been edited.
That said, I still can't believe Fox hired the clown. Real journalists don't whine!
Oh yeah, Friday night I must have heard him say "6 days!" a dozen or more times. Da boy can't count, either.

While I am certainly no big fan of him, He has been willing to go to Iraq and NOLA and get in the dirt. Where many of his critics have not.

Yes Geraldo did get in the dirt... And draw in the dirt :)
But seriously, what they fail to mention is that from what I understand this particular lady called FOX, and told them where to find her, and on that story they actually told her on the phone that they were sending geraldo to rescue her.
I watched it live -- even while she was on the phone. She was concerned about having to lose her dog etc -- but Geraldo did in fact see that her dog too got rescued.
There were no authorities who knew where she was when she was on the phone with fox, and fox arranged to go and rescue her. Likely, Geraldo actually contacted some authorities to go with him to assist in the rescue -- which would be a wise move. This would be why there were rescue workers with Geraldo.
This rather important detail seems to be missing in every story covering this.

The photo at the top of this story is of Floritta and Dusty.
The stink is about another woman, wheelchair bound that they were helping down the stairs of an apartment building. I saw the clip tonight and it appears that an unidentified man had the back of the wheelchair and Geraldo was at her feet as they lowered her step by step down the stairs backwards. A uniformed man runs up to help when they have about 4 steps left to go and it looks like the unidentified man is saying "no, I got her."
The soldier/airman never got near enough to Geraldo for him to push him off, so I don't know where the reporter got the story.
I think Geraldo is a megalomaniac, but he appears to be innocent on this one.

Love him or hate him Geraldo is passonate about what he believes in. It also appears genuinely concerned about what when on in New Orleans. I think the Times should humble itself and apologize for shotting from the hit to quick.

I continue to be appalled how the management of the NYT's chooses to take the low road on many issues. This statement by Ms. Stanley appears to be in error. With all the important news, regarding the hurricane, why does the Times elect to cover such a trivial story? Plus at this point the Times is not retracting or even suggesting that the story is being further checked. The current style of your paper has taken a great newspaper tradition and trashed it.

I watched live the incident the New York Times is reporting about. It is not the clip that Fox is showing. I was shocked at I watched Geraldo muscle his way in front of a military person to 'help' put someone in a wheelchair into a helicpoter, not down a staircase. I never liked him before, but this really did it. I have sent two emails to Fox asking them to show the correct clip and no response.

people like geraldo get what they give... and have given... and deserve it... as does fox news... which i still believe is head and shoulders BELOW new york times as a news source no matter how many frivolous lawsuits they want to file.

I saw the same clip that Peg is describing in #17. I told my wife about it afterwards and said that it seemed odd that National Guardsmen would just allow Geraldo to help lift a wheelchair-bound woman into a helicopter. I thought it looked staged and self-promoting. However, that wasn't the clip that Bill O'Reilly was showing the other night when Geraldo was bitching about the New York Times. Is this spin in the "No Spin Zone"?

I saw the video and at first I thought the person was Geraldo, but then noticed he was the one in the back. The guy in front carrying the lady down had a moustache, same hair style and build like Geraldo. I think Stanley thought that was Geraldo, but in reality he was the one in the back.
It was an error and the paper should correct it.
