Hoo boy. A few articles have come out recently reporting that a large number of alleged pedophiles are also avid Star Trek fans. Of course, this has resulted in much speculation over what it is exactly about the show that appeals to sexual deviants. Some think it has something to do with Star Trek occupying a world where social attitudes have "evolved" beyond today's thinking, but Ellen Ladowski in the Huffington Post points out that sexuality has always been portrayed in a rather cartoonish and innocuous manner, especially on the original series. To me, the answer is much more simple: Pedophiles tend to be outcasts, and outcasts have always been attracted to shows like Star Trek. Trying to find some direct correlation between pedophilia and Star Trek seems a bit foolish.

Nicely put, although one would hope you don't mean Star Trek only attracts outcasts...

I am always skeptical of such studies. How exactly do they survey pedophiles? Do they give them questionaires and take a shot in the dark and ask them if they are star trek fans? DO they raid their homes and find an inordinate amount of Trekkie paraphenalia?
A study can be drawn that an inordiate amount of pedophiles also drink milk and brush their hair.

The "evidience" behind this "theory" is observations of Canadian sex crimes investigators (I think it was Ontario, but I forget) who noticed that almost every pedophile they arrested had a prominant collection of Star Trek memerobilia. So it's not just that they watched Star Trek, or liked Star Trek, but they enjoyed the show enough to collect the memoribilia. And it was always Star Trek, they never had displayes of Battlestar Gallactia or Lost in Space or Star Wars stuff.

Wow. Did anyone ever consider that the "memorabilia" is probably bait? Adults collecting Star Trek gear isn't devious or as suspicious-looking as men collecting dolls or other "kid-centric" toys.
It's a sad observation and an even sadder conclusion to tie deviants/deviant behaviour in with watching Star Trek and/or collecting its memorabilia.
Paedophile = Star Trek Fan
Paedophile = Deviant
Star Trek Fan = Paedophile/Deviant
Pretty stupid and lazy logic there - unfortunately, this is gonna act like mud and stick :-(.

I would think that Lost in Space would
be more popular with the pedophile crowd
because of Dr. Smith.
