The Daily Show: August 18, 2005

dailyshowWelcome to yet another episode of The Daily Show. Tonight's has been crafted lovingly out of, uh, cheese curds. But let's step away from the fake news for a moment to the real news... specifically, CNN's Situation Room, a room in which you can see any... situation. The show did 29 hours of coverage on the BTK Killer because the people need to know! Like... is he a bad guy? Well, his name is Bind Torture and Kill. One can only assume so. It's not as though we need CNN to tell us exactly how to feel about this guy getting a life sentence (and by the way, the way to feel is "f*cking great").

Moving on to Israel, where Israeli police have been sweeping Jewish settlements, evicting the people. in israel, there's a foe inside the religion. troops are removing jewish settlers. Israel's President Katzav went on television to express his feelings about the situation in a rather familiar surrounding. The translator asks, "Have you or someone you love been injured?" Seems as though Katzav filmed in someone's office. We cut away from the clip to Stewart in front of the screen labeled "The Jew Carry Show" (just thought that was worth mentioning). He covers the geography of Israel and exactly where people are being told to leave. Hey! There's a Springfield! As it turns out, every country is required a Springfield. Anyway, some settlers ended up leaving peacefully and many even thought it was cause for celebration, dancing about in the streets. Unfortunately, most found this move hard to bear and had to be forced out. The worst footage is watching people being shoved into cramped buses. To add insult to injury, the film being shown on the bus was The Passion of the Christ. While everyone is playing the blame game on this situation, Stewart poitns out the real culprit -- well, then again there was the invasion from a few centuries ago -- but no, there was that other... He goes through all these possible causes from history and ends up growing a massive beard (wow! So realistic!).

Suddenly, we snap back to a clean-shaven Stewart (it's like magic!) and are joined by Senior Exodist, Rob Corddry. Obviously, it's been an emotional day at the Gaza Strip. Corddry says that, all around, you can already hear the beginning of the ancient Palestinian tradition of 'deebs'. What is deebs? Well, it's when a Gazaite comes across an unclaimed parcel of land and calls, if you will, "I got deebs!" I think I kind of understand because my friends and I try to call "deebs" the final slice of pizza all the time. Corddry looks around and reminds the viewer that both sides are arguing that this land belongs to them because God bestowed it upon them. In all honesty though, Corddry says that if God had given it to him, he'd wonder what he did to offend God. In his expert opinion, someone had given God this land, God saw it, and then He "re-gifted" it. The mood of this situation can be best described by Roamin' Ray Dobson, singer of songs of intractable conflict. Cue the song "This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land"... but minus the "This Land is Your Land" part.

It's time for some "Back in Black"! Lewis Black's still got stuff to angrily shake his fingers at because, although the adventure in Iraq is losing popularity, Americans still love war! We have even found a way to love our bastard stepchild war, Vietnam. There are history buffs out there reenacting 'Nam in the woods of Virginia. Yeah... yet another reason to avoid the backwoods of Virginia. They're probably just doing it so that they can win every time. Wars always seem a lot more fun once they're over, yeah? Even WWII is better now! Take the famous sailor/nurse kiss in Times Square. It's been immortalized not only in photograph but in sculpture form. A new figure was created in honor of 60 years after WWII. The nurse from the picture is still alive and stopped by to express her memories of that day. She says that the sailor came up, she closed her eyes, he kissed her, and then he left her alone and walked away. Eh. Not quite as romantic... Black says that it reminds him of his last date.

Tonight's guest is John H. Richardson, writer of My Father the Spy. His book is about his relationship with his father, who was a CIA agent that was outed (that sounds familiar). When he comes on, Stewart compliments him and tells him that it's a very good book and that he likes how it's written like a report. Richardson says that it was the only way he knew how to write it because he was pretty much researching his father. Since his father was sworn to secrecy about all his CIA business, Richardson had to dig up all the information himself. Through talking to his father's friends and colleagues, though, he learned a lot of interesting things, many of which were extremely unbelievable to him (for example, he found out that one thing his dad loved to do in his free time was go play piano in gypsy nightclubs). One cannot help but create the mental image of the suave spy guy. That's the reason why Richardson put off writing this book for such a long time despite pressures from his friends. His father brooded his whole life over the things he'd done because he was the CIA's main "dude" (Richardson said this, not me) and he felt that the romantic spy image didn't do his justice. Unfortunately, he was outed by a reporter through a high official source (who was never named). Hm... Okay, so with political motivations in the middle of  a war... someone of high power... reveals the name of a CIA agent to discredit his effort. I swear I've heard this somewhere before.

We'll see you next week, kids. Quickly, to your Moment of Zen!: A penguin walking about with a bunch of people in uniform. I didn't know what was going on until I read the caption. This penguin is an honorary colonel to the Royal Norwegian Guard. What the hell?
