Here it is, the Bewitched statue that is causing so much hubbub. Honestly, why is this causing such a stir? Actually, is it causing such a stir? I live close to Salem, MA, and while there are certainly people in Salem who don't like the statue (they showed them on the news), I don't think it's that much of a big deal. The number of people in favor of the statue far, far outnumber the people who oppose it. The statue isn't making light of what happened to the 20 people who died during the witch trials, it's celebrating a pop culture icon, and putting a positive light on the city. Besides, how many Salem city groups, organizations and companies use a witch in it's logo or marketing? Should they all stop using it?
I think it's a great idea. Maybe it's just because I always had a huge crush on Elizabeth Montgomery.

If Minneapolis can have its Mary Tyler Moore statue, then Salem can have its Elizabeth Montgomery.

I live in Salem, and there has always been a small--but very influential--number of complete snobs who settled in Salem for property values and "history", but mainly property values. These same folks won't give me the time of day even though I've lived here all my life!
Remember that Mrs. Montgomery came here to film in October, 1970. If we are pimping witches for publicity, we have done so for 35 years!! (the horse has not only left the barn, it's run off a cliff...)
The historical snobs would rather sit in their little houses on Chestnut and Federal Sts. to look down on the rest of us. With their SUVs and plasma screens, of course...
It's a beautiful statue. Mrs. Montgomery would be very pleased if she were still with us.
