Oh, the unapologetic drama. It's better even than foreshadowing - with all the ads telling us that one of the agents was going to die, every minute of this episode had us sure that THIS was the minute. DiNozzo falls down a (small) hill...and is fine. Someone has their sniper rifle sighted on McGee...and Ducky's van moves into view. There's a (extremely rare in Virginia) poisonous snake on Agent Todd's feet...but DiNozzo saves her. Then the victim's car is rigged to explode, and DiNozzo runs last, break to commercial...he's fine. Who's going to die? Who IS it, already?
What we do know is that someone is trying to kill everyone at NCIS, again. (For those of you who missed out on last week, an evil and demented pharmaceutical CEO tried to kill them all with the plague, and DiNozzo almost died. Mwa ha ha!) This time it's a terrorist assassin bent on killing Gibbs. You see, Al Quaeda wants Gibbs dead. And the terrorist (who's undergoing some sort of terrorist hazing) sees fit to tell him about the plot. Best of all, if Gibbs can eliminate the terrorist cell in 24 hours, the assassin will back off. Isn't that cute. (cue Middle Eastern mood music, terrorist zooms off on his motorcycle.)
Of course, there's more to the story. It turns out that terrorist Ari isn't getting his entrance exam, but is running the cell. And the cell is out to murder thousands (a "soft target") of Marines and their family members with a UAV (unmanned airborne vehicle) stolen using the fingerprint of the murdered Navy pilots from the opening credits. As usual, they're coming in at the very last possible second to save the fighting men and the cute little girl who's holding the homing beacon in a teddy bear (dastardly!). And Kate is shot! She's down! But no, she's fine. Everyone's celebrating. And...yikes. Bullet through the back of the head. It is Kate, dying despite all evidence to the contrary. They fooled us after all.

My husband and I are absolutely furious that "creative writing" thought they had to kill one of the crew off. We will no longer be watching after tonights finale. Shame on them!

I'm gutted. Dramatically, I like it when shows do things you don't expect and I have to say, having the balls to kill off a major character is, well, ballsy....
But I have to take issue with who they axed.
Here is a show with 6 major characters. 4 men and 2 women. Add in Ducky's assistent and you have 5 men. Not only that, but the two women on the show are smart, tough and take no shit. Who get's killed off? One of the smart, tough, take no shit women. I would shot Tony. Or, while I like him, maybe Proby. But not Kate.
Lame.

She wanted off the show; they wrote her out. Now possibilities for new characters and new plots. Will evil Ari get it? Will he get someone else first? Probably worth watching next year, even without the Kate/Tony banter.

Yeah, lame indeed. I am pissed that Bellisario felt the need to kill off a character in the first place.

Thought you guys might like to know sheasked to leave the show....
An actor leaves. When Sasha Alexander asked to leave NCIS, creator Donald Bellisario rewrote the season finale, weaving the death of her character, agent Kate Todd, into a story about a terrorist hunting down her colleague, Leroy Gibbs. Bellisario sees possibility: "an opportunity to bring in a new character and start a new dynamic."

Well I finally find a show I like and you all destroyed it killing Kate. I hope Sasha is the one wanting to go on to another project or I hope someone at NCSI is having a dream, since everyone was dreaming that someone got killed. TV shows to me pretty much sucks and you all have/had a good show.
This show was the one show that my son and I enjoyed together. As a viewer I would like at least a answer one way or other why you feel the need to kill off a main character.

Maybe she will be replaced by Catherine Bell of JAG. One never knows does one.

My wife and I watched this show every Tuesday, often taping it so we didn't miss any. I have to say I was speechless when the ending happened!!! I was caught completely off-guard. We both felt, myself especially, that the chemistry between Gibbs, DiNozzo and Kate was the primary reason the show was so good.
Now, I don't know if that chemistry can be re-created by introducing a new character. Proby was OK, but he was still just an "outsider" to the primary three. I'm sorry to hear that Sasha Alexander wanted to move on. I mean I understand it, but am sorry to see her leave.
All that being said, as far as television finales go, that was pretty intense and I'm sure it illicited the response the writers and producers were looking for - absolute shock. It was so abrupt.

My wife and I watch NCIS every week and its one of the better CSI style shows on TV. The ending was a brilliant. Thinking Kate sacrificed herself to save her partners was a nail biter, but then shes fine. All of a sudden BAMMM shot threw the head. My wife and I looked at each other and said at the same time DAMN! Bet there were thousands of you repeating the same words.
Sasha will be missed.

Kate's assassination stunned my wife and I -- but, after the show was over, we realized that it made sense because it pushes Agent Gibbs to a more aggressive threshold to get Ari -– on both a personal and a professional level. In addition, the incident helps inject a no-nonsense atmosphere into an NCIS team that has threaded an excess of humor into the mix in recent months.

I think the show is great! I love the chemistry between the characters. Just not sure what's going to happen now with Kate gone. I was hoping it would be McGee...not that I don't like him but the part I liked the best about the show was Tony and Kate's love/hate relationship. I will watch next season before making my final decision on this turn in direction.

Wayne,
Where did you get that quote? I never heard any interview of Alexander wanting to leave the show and only question the validity of the quote because they call Gibbs "Leroy" when his name is Jethro.

Last night when Kate was shot on the season finale, mouths dropped and our house was filled with complete silence. My family and I are furious with the ending of last nights show. I am glad that Sasha felt it was time to move on to better things. But really, was it necessary to kill her. I believe that you could have written a better ending. She will be missed.

I was very upset by Kate's death. The show probably kept my attention because of the chemistry between Kate and Tony.
I think that this showed killed one of the strongest women characters on television. She did guard the president. Throughout both seasons I don't think it was addressed as to how great she actually was.
I do agree with everyone else that I was hoping it was McGee. There were 3 men on the field team and I don't feel that Kate was expendable. I also hate the fact that this seems to be a trend in killing off characters for every show this season.

The quote from Wayne came from USA Today and his name is Leroy Jethro Gibbs according to CBS so that is why they probably used Leroy.
I have to agree with some other posters that the dynamic between Tony, Kate, and Gibbs is why the show is so great. Now that they are briging someone new in it will change everything. I will definitely watch next season to see what happens but this SUCKS!!!!!

Well, I will no longer be watching NCIS - of ALL the people they could have killed off, I cannot believe it was KATE. She was the whole heart and chemistry of the show. It was only with the addition of her character that the show came alive and had any humanity. She was the perfect foil for EVERYONE. I can only hope there was a reason (in her favor, for her career) that they killed HER off instead of, say, the kid who is helping Ducky. I LOVED everyone on the show, but it is truly over for me. Bad bad bad move, CBS, or whoever made this decision. I strongly suspect you will lose most of your viewers. Sasha, if you have had better offers, more power to you; if they killed you off just for a season finale, I hope you know that they have actually just killed off the entire show.
