Things were a bit ... disappointing for this season ender of Lost. While there were lots of great scenes throughout the episode, most of the mysteries we all wanted answers to are still ... unanswered! Let's go over what was bad in this episode and what was good.
First, the bad. J.J. Abrams and company had said we'd see a portion of the "monster" tonight. I think for a half a second I saw some kind of rope or chain pulling Locke, but I'm still not sure. One thing is clear though, the monster/security system is definitely at least partially mechanical. The sounds it made were clearly metal-on-metal at certain times. Then there was that weird smoke when it blew up (I got my best shot of it to the right). At one point it sort of reminded me of the thing from Predator, sort-of invisible but not.We never get an answer to what the lottery numbers really mean. There are several numerical references throughout the episode, such as the gate number for the flight (23). Hurley finally sees the numbers on the side of the hatch and panics, but still, no answers there or even a hint as to what they're there for. Also, what about Walter's mysterious powers, and the polar bear?
Probably the most anticipated event of the episode was the opening of the hatch. What did everyone expect? I'd say a good portion of you expected to see at least something more than a long, broken ladder down into nothingness. Sure, it leaves us hanging until the next season, but does it really make us want to discuss it all summer long at the water cooler?
Now for the good. The dynamite scene was more tense than I could've imagined. I just knew Arzt was a redshirt from the moment he was introduced, and though he was a little interesting, I'm glad we didn't get a new main character forced down our throats like that. I loved his dialog with Hurley about there being more than just the main group we see on the show for survivors, and how he's at least lost some weight this whole time (note: we see him in flashbacks, and I swear he really did lose weight since those scenes!)
I was totally taken by surprise by what the raft guys encounter at sea. When Danielle mentions she heard voices say they were after the "boy," I didn't even consider Walter. Now that is the scene people can discuss this summer - who the heck were those guys on the boat? They sounded possibly American. I don't even want to get into wondering what they want with a young kid, though they may know of Walter's psychic abilities and want to put them to no good.
There were some great emotional moments between Sun and Jin and Jin being told he'd "never be free," then the cut to him out in the open water. Michael made a good point about that island being so big and one that should surely be on a map. We learn that Charlie's addiction is still intact and also the name of Claire's baby, Aaron (not 'Ethan' as some theorized).
Still, Lost is a great show and I can't wait to see how it starts out next season. Will they spelunk down the open hatch hole and find something cool? Is Sawyer dead? How will the guys survive at sea with the raft destroyed? And once and for all, what in the hell is that monster? I'll keep my ear to the ground and make sure I reveal what I know once our new weekly spoiler column starts here soon. Stay tuned!
Quote of the episode: "You got some Arzt on you."

The comment Sun made about the meaning of names stuck with me. If Lost is getting us busy on numbers, is there something we're missing with letters or some numerology/Da Vinci code?
I'd agree with the mechanical. It sounded like the uphill portion of a rollercoaster as it was dragging Locke. If it turns out to be some pseudo-mystical Terminator 2 type shapeshifting thingie, I'll be perturbed.

This episode was great except for the last scene where the the tunnel was revealed to be under the hatch.
The monster being a cloud of dirty smoke was a little disappointing but check everytime they "show" the monster it is like a vacuum cleaner sucking up trees and dirt.
God I hope this isn't some invisble robot repairing a spaceship that is actually the island trying to repair itself.(like Tommyknockers)

Learning that the "Black Rock" was a slave ship should lead to something next season since so far 2 vessels have been from Africa even though they are lost somewhere between Australia and California.
Also Sayid showed me a cool new way to cure myself next time I get a paper cut.

Well, let me say that I was happy with the name that was chosen for the baby. There was the whole thing with Kate and the numbers which makes me wonder if there isn't some significance to the numbers for each of our main players in the show since apparently 23 corresponds to her. So we need to think about how maybe all of the other numbers correspond to the rest of the major characters.

Harold Perrineau Jr. and Jorge Garcia on Jimmy Kimmel Live comfirm that the boat people are "the others".
They're re-airing Lost this Saturday at 8:00pm.
J.J. Abrams said we're infinitly smarter than than anyone working on their show. God I wish I can think of something clever so he can steal it now.

Honestly, that was one of the best finales I've ever seen. So many things I loved. To name a few--the philosophical schism between Jack and Locke opening wider. Hurley's airport escapade and his hysterically funny thumbs up to Walt. The look on Charlie's face when he saw the heroin, and the reveal of the virgin Mary statue tucked into his napsack. Claire's dark statement of disbelief in fate. That first shot of the whispy blackness that introduced the "security system." Jack saving Locke in the hole. Walt's abduction at sea. Jack switching dynamite bags with Kate. Said's breakneck pace through the jungle and the gunpowder technique that cauterized Charlie's wound. The emotionally moving montage of all the characters getting on the plane. And still in my memory, that incredible scene from last week's part one where Sawyer tells Jack about meeting his Dad at the bar. From Artz blowing himself up to the pull back into the dark tunnel, this was one magnificent show. Congratulations to this stellar cast and crew.

My favorite line too was "Jack, you have some Arnst on you".
Anyone else notice Locke call Hurley Hugo? As far as I can tell, he never told anyone on the Island his real name.

We watched it with the Closed Captions on, sometimes their are nice little hints in it.
For instance when the arm was taking Locke the CCs read "Mechanical Gears Clacking"
Also, we don't know that Charlie took H, we only see the head of a statue. I might be wrong but I thought it was indicated that he was Catholic, so perhaps he took a satue minus the drugs to set up an altar.
We Catholics have an obsession with Mary after all.

The final plane montage was interesting. It seems as though every one of the main characters was destined for a different fate; there were all doomed to a sad future, unfulfilled promise, and general malaise. Locke's disability, Sawyer's grifter ways, Kate's imprisonment, etc. But the island took them and "re-purposed" them; they all have a new destiny now.
The boat people were clearly the "others", or at least some of them. They have a boat! And guns! And molotov cocktails! Sweet jesus.
As for the security system, man I just don't know. I remember during the episode in which Locke gave Boone the hoobie-joobie paste on his head in order to make him hallucinate, the thing shows up and starts chasing Boone and the fake Shannon. During the initial attack, you can see two trees ripped out of the ground and fly into the sky. What's the deal with that? Is the thing underground? Is it somehow connected to the wispy smoky thing? One of my friends says that you can see a smoke creature in the pilot episode, destroying the engine, but it looks more like debris flying around to me.
And yeah, now that you mention it, where did Locke find out Hurley's real name? What did Locke see in that early episode when he was confronted by the security machine that makes him unafraid of it now? Did Kate throw the dynamite into the hole or just behind Locke? Is the hatch an exit, or more likely, an entrance into a shelter or tunnel?
Man, we're gonna be talking about this until the fall.

shouldn't locke have known there was a ladder in the hatch? i mean he had to have seen it earlier. his ep, at the end, he's hitting the hatch, light comes on, he looks in the window. so two things (1) he had to have known there was a ladder and it was broken and (2)as deep as the tunnel apparently goes it must've been super bright to light it up enough to illuminate the outside.

I'll go out on a limb here and mention a theory I had way back when we first heard the radio transmission from "the French woman." What if this island houses some sort of fountain of youth, where people age much slower than they would in the real world. What if the hatch leads down to the source of the youth spring, the one they've all been drinking from at the caves all this time? What if "the others" are actually sailors from the "Black Rock" who just have not aged in all this time, and the boat and weapons they have are simply confiscated stuff from the many vessels that have been attracted to the island? Imagine next season we see a flashback of Danielle from 16 years ago, and she looks THE SAME, unaged. Alright, here's more craziness ... what if Claire's baby is so special (as the psychic said) because he's unaffected by the fountain's effects of youth.

According to this page:
http://www.babynamesworld.com/meaning_of_Aaron.html
The meaning of the name "Aaron" also includes "messenger", which I think is the intended meaning. Whow knows? :-)
Locke saw the light from the hatch in the episode where Boone was killed... there's no light near the entrance. Now that the hatch is open, Locke's going down that thing.
Walt's ability to make things manifest themselves is probably going to help save him, if he's actually figured that out. I'm not sure he has though. The birds in the flashback were certainly a big indicator, and the polar bear too (that comic book he found and was reading had a polar bear in it...Hurley was reading it on the plane).
I'm not sure it's a psyhic thing, because if it was, he never would have left the island just to be captured by "the others".
Sawyer is going to be all over Hurley once they get back to the island and Sawyer hears the name "Hugo".
I hope we're safe from the whole "alien" idea. I mean, aliens wouldn't stamp the outside of some hatch with numbers, would they?

I was actually overly impressed with the finale. They did a great job of keeping the humor in the beginning to make the heartache that much more later in the episode.
Arzt's interaction with the dynomite was funny ("did I tell you to come closer") until he exploded and pieces of him went everywhere. That's when my jaw dropped...i knew he was a goner but I wasn't expecting that.
I want to see this monster and I don't want to wait until next season! It's definately mechanical of some sort but does it have some sort of cloaking device? Maybe it's a futuristic tree trimming robot? and it burns the trees as fuel causing black smoke?
The scenes on the raft were all excellent. It's amazing how much Walt and his dad have bonded from boarding the plane until now. They were about 15 miles out to sea when the boat took Walt, right? How are they going to get back?! How badly was Sawyer shot? These are the things that are going to keep me excited about this show over the summer.

I'm thinking it's possible that Walt conjured the boat guys, like he possibly did the polar bear. Remember, this happened right after Sawyer was talking to Mike about Walt's rude behavior, and Mike said Sawyer must have a death-wish to want to come along on the raft, since he's sure not a hero. Walt might have been asleep, but the conversation could have made an impression on his subconscious.
It was right after that, that the bad guys showed up and Sawyer was shot trying to be a hero. Coincidence?
Or it might not have been Walt that conjured: Remember that right after Sayid got in touch with his inner torturer, he was almost immediately captured and tortured. Again: Coincidence? Or does "The Island" make these things happen?
At any rate, we still don't have concrete proof of any "others": It could have been the deranged Rousseau who started the fire. The boat guys could have been from somewhere else, or, like I said, they could be made up (for that matter, so could Rousseau).
On other topics:
I also noticed Locke's Hugo mention. I'm wondering what that means ...
The comic book -- the one with the polar bear! -- belonged to Hurley. (That makes sense, since it's in Spanish.) Is the polar bear another connection to his lottery "curse", and thus to the numbers?
(Note to "Man": 1 - LOL on the paper cut! 2 - Thanks for the heads up on the Saturday re-showing!)

I had wondered about Locke calling Hurley Hugo as well. Did anyone else notice that the comic book with the polar bear belonged to Hurley. He pulled it out as he sat down on the plane.
I was kind of diappointed when they blew the hatch and didn't find the people from the raft sitting there. "We were in the water and blacked out, and then..."

Good moring america extra scene from Lost i missed it. Did anyone see what it was. They said they were going to put in in the show but didnt have enough time. Was this a ploy for us to watch Good moring america in the morning? Like saying they were going to talk to j.j. on the jimmy kimmel show about lost and it was them talking about mission impossible 3. Will it be added to the show they are going to broadcast saturday?

did anyone watch jimmy kimmel? i can't believe we're not gonna find out what is in the hatch until season 4. you know they're gonna be scared to go down the hatch until the finale of next season.
seriously though, when did we find out about the hatch, like 8 episodes ago? i mean this show is out of control with the stupid teasing. i like on jimmy kimmel how he says to fox something to the effect of, does any writer on this show have anything planned or is it being written on the fly? um, i think the latter.

I for one was dissapointed with the finale. The writers had better start revealing some secrets next season. Didn't they learn anything from the Matrix sequels? If you are going to build up the mystery this much, there better be a big payoff at the end.
Also, did I miss something? I thought I read we were going to find out Crazy French Lady had been on the island longer than 16 years?
