Lots
of flashbacks tonight as we head towards the two-hour season finale
next week. More Kate background regarding her bank robbery past, with
some dialog that certainly seems to point to her doing something bad to
possibly her father to cause her to be a wanted woman. We sort-of learn
Sawyer's full name, which sounded something like "James Foe." (Note: I'm sure one commenter was right and it was an Aussie "Ford" I heard) I wasn't
sure what we were supposed to get out of the Walt flashback. The scene
with Jack in the bar seemed odd and misplaced until you work the
numbers game again - the last two numbers of the "lucky numbers"
sequence are the same as Jack's seat number (23) and Hannah (Anna?) Lucia's (42).
The
big news of the episode starts with Danielle coming to camp, warning
everyone that "the others" are coming. Why oh why didn't anyone ask her
who the Ethan dude was? C'mon Sayid, I'd thought you smarter than that. After seeing the freaky thick black smoke rising from the jungle, a crew scrambles to find a way to cram everyone into the mystery hatch. Once again Artz (I called him "Art" last week, and I missed what Hurley said his real name is) makes another appearance, so I'd say he's either playing a red shirt for the series or he'll play a bigger role next season. Oh, and did anyone else find it odd to see it raining on one part of the island and not on the other?
Two great reveals for this episode: learning what the "black rock" finally is, and Danielle's description of the giant island monster/machine as the island's "security system." Call me sappy, but I found Sawyer's talk with Jack touching, and I almost bawled like a baby when Walt's dog tried to swim to him (yeah, I'm a sucker for dogs).
Quote of the episode: "If you want to keep a secret, don't tell the fat guy."

How long will Lost be able to stay on the air? No doubt ABC will want to have it as long a possible, considering the great ratings, but they will have to answer the questions eventually.
I know there are alot of theories about the island, the main one being that it is a form of purgatory, but really, I don't know if I could stand waiting years just to find out.
It's gay, but I'm also a damn sucker for dogs, which always results in me cursing about the tears being caused by the dust in the room.

I think I heard "Sawyer's" real name as James Ford ... accounting for the Aussie accent.
Not sure how you got Kate doing something bad to her father ... I thought the events the Marshall was referring to were last week's flashback references regarding Tom, her old sweetheart and the bank robber/boyfriend that she shoots in episode 12.
On a serious note, is it just me or are Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) and Sun (Yunjin Kim) one of the best things about the show?! I find their characters and story the most interesting and best written ... certainly they are (for me) the emotional heart of the show ... Sun's goodbye to Jin and there reconsiliation ... man, it got to me even with reading subtitles.

I dunno, I thought it was Anna but then I thought Jack said Hanna. Oh well.
The marshall said Kate was talking about "mitigating circumstances" which leads me to believe she killed someone but she thought it was the right thing to do, like an abusive father or a father in pain and needing to be put out of mercy.

All the flashbacks were to show how the characters have evolved Walt and his dad are now close, Sawyer is not as selfish, Shannon realizes that she was a bitch and Kate cares for something bigger than herself. Jack's flashback was to remind us that the back of the plane was never found and when we see Ana-Lucia(Michelle Rodriguez) on the island it won't be a shock, as predicted by the black woman in the first episodes who is still waiting for her husband.
The rain thing is not odd because that happens on island all the time.
Sayid kept asking her question and she ignored him, I guess he figured there is no point.
The "security system" does seem to be artificial but then everyone was convinced that the "black rock" was an actual black rock.
It is James Ford.
I never believed that purgatory theory but it may be Avalon or maybe the island is a living creature or a Dark City type plot

The episode was great and emotionally well balanced which was more than I can say about Smallville and Revelations, I also saw That 70's Show and Alias.
Whew, wednesdays are busy, I missed King of Queens and Yes Dear which I also watch regularly.
My favorite quote of the episode:
After Danielle told how to get the dynamite at the black rock in the dark territory Hurley said "Well that's 3 reasons to go right there."
Can't wait until next week.

The one thing you forgot to mention here was the wonderful scene between Jin and Sun where they both apologize to each other. Daniel Dae Kim and Yunjin Kim are really superb actors and they always seem to deliver a powerful performance for me.

not super familiar with all relevant numbers in the show, but i thought it was a little conspicuous they showed the clock (5:23) in the walt flashback. and i still don't understand why they took hurley with them to get the dynamite? what bc he once went to find rousseau? so what? and he was shown the hatch. if you saw some random big hatch on an island you were stuck on wouldn't you examine it? no one's bothered to mention the numbers on the hatch?

Another great, great episode. Matthew Fox is one of those actors who can do more not saying a word (like when Sawyer told him about the conversation with his father) than some can reciting lines of Shakespeare. My wife made the excellent observation that he should sit in the captain's chair in the next Star Trek series, whatever it may be. He's pretty much captain of the island; just imagine what he could do with a starship! :)

It killed me too when Vincent tried to swim to the boat. What I love about the show is that there are enough mysteries that the show could go on for 10 seasons, solving one mystery per season. And I never tire of the personal backstories. It's like getting pieces to a puzzle. Something about Artz rubbed me the wrong way, but it might just be because he was rude to Hurley, and Hurley is one of my favorites. Here's my question, and I know that it'll be answered next week, but I can't wait. In the "scene's from the next" that they showed after the episode, was Claire screaming "She took my baby!" or "She killed my baby!"? And I wonder, with the mysterious dinosaur/alarm system thing-- can whatever it turns out to be be as good as the things that we have imagined. I hope that they never actually show it. And I am really curious about Walt's psychic abilities. He seems to summon animals (the bird in his flashback, the polar bear when he was reading the comic book), but then he also seems to be able to "sense" things, like how he knew about the hatch just by touching Locke. I think that's something we won't learn until next season. I can't believe I have to go a whole summer with no new episodes!

but arzt seem forced , i even thought we would be shown the monster ( or what ever it is ) eating up , maybe they are saving it for another episode

Well...Artz' first name is Leslie...but...whatever.
They obviously needed Hurlley to go with them so that all of the main characters, save Said, would be away when the Big Bad [I miss Buffy...] wipes out the rest of the survivors.
From a writing perspective, Said, along with his love interest, have to remain so that you can really feel for the massacre that's about to occur. Intrestingly enough, all of the main characters are away.
As an aside: Artz just screams redshirt. I wonder when he gets it.
This finale is gonna be awesome!

I'm thinking that the island has a weird magnetic field, sort of like a Bermuda Triangle. Remember when Locke gave away his compass because ti didn't work on the island? That's probably why there are so many people getting stranded there in boats and planes.

What's also incredibly strange is how far inland the "black rock" seems. Could the shoreline have receded that much in 200 years?
Someone elsewhere had the theory that Danielle's ship was actually filled with test animals which escaped when she landed on the island, hence the polar bear.

The ship stranded inland is unmistakably a reference to the classic Latin American novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, which features a Spanish galleon wreaked too far inland to be natural. I loved the book but can't find my copy, so this is from the (sorry) Cliff Notes:
"Macondo [the town of the book] is described as a place on no map; in fact, it is more a direction than a location. It is so rooted in the past, where time has stood still, that the town has a prehistoric atmosphere. Note that the "town" bears a close resemblance to the "memory" of a dream, for only in memory does time not move, and only in a dream -- when a dream is remembered -- is someplace really no place." This is not to suggest that the Island in lost is a dream, but rather, living there is like a dream. The notes continue:
"In Moacondo, there is, seemingly, magic in everything. And solitude pervades and permeates everything. The town is described as lying outside civilization..."
This is not to suggest any one-to-one parallels to the novel, but it does provide a framework for describing the island, book's use of "Magical Realism."

Mike! Brilliant connection, why hasn't it been called out before? M?uez' novel is full of flashbacks, dreams, seemingly impossible physical happenings.
The Black Rock clearly ties the two together. As you suggest, not a one-to-one connection, but perhaps part of the source material for Lost. Now to re-read it.
On another point the Jin/Sun goodbye scene was one of the most beautiful and delicate moments I've ever viewed on television. It was breath-taking.
And the best part is how well the writing and acting has lead up to this moment. So much exposition on their distance and his coldness and pride laid the perfect groundwork for this one seemingly small instant.
I could love the show for that scene alone.

Ok, here's my two cents:
The flashbacks for the various characters were not clear explanations of anything; they were just meant to give viewers a "key" as to each character's personality or character traits.
-Walt: the kid really did not want to get on that plane. Did he make it crash with his heebie-jeebie powers?
-Jack: the girl was placed in the back of the plane. The back of the plane split off the main fuselage during the crash, in mid-air. Will we see Michelle Rodriguez (Ana Lucia) again? Methinks yes, alive and well with the others from the back of the plane (side note: in the episode where Boone and Locke find the plane, Boone manages to make contact and explains he is a survivor of Oceanic flight 815; the person on the other end of the radio says "No, we're the survivors of flight 815)
-Sawyer: His name is James Ford. That's big.
-Kate: We learn the timeline of her events. First, she does something to her mother/father(?), then Tom gets killed, then the Marshall gets the plane, then she does the whole bank robbery thing.
-Shannon: This bitch is sick. She will do whatever she wants, whether or not it's harmful to other people, without batting an eyelash. That's going to come into play later, I think. Maybe she turns and goes nuts, who knows.
-Jin and Sun: This scene really shows gave more heft to the scene in the previous episode where she makes the decision not to leave him.
Theories about the island. Man, who the hell knows at this point. Were the polar bears on the ship? A security system for what? Why didn't Danielle and Hurley see the numbers on the hatch? (That was killing me.)
I almost cried at like four different points during this episode. The Sawyer and Jack scene was poingnat, the scene where Walt gives Shannon the dog, Jin finally breaking down and apologizing to his wife, completely and whole-heartedly, and the aforementioned dog swimming out to the raft.
All in all, this was one of the most well-crafted, perfectly paced television episodes I've ever seen.
I'm crapping my pants waiting for next week.

I wonder what was on Hurley's note? He made a point of telling the hobbit not to read it. Possibly just to typically lighten the mood with a Hurley scene, or perhaps it was something to do with the numbers?
